She’s the iconic broadcaster known for her avant-garde fashion….and for being the Australian spokesperson in the Eurovision Song Contest three years in a row. But all chapters must come to a close, and Lee Lin Chin has decided that time is now. She’s resigned from her role at SBS after more than three decades of fronting their news program.

Chin, renowned for her direct presenting style, sense of humour and trendsetting outfits, has been the most recognizable figure at SBS and the woman delivering the first word on world news for many Australians. From the Port Arthur massacre to the September 11 attacks to the death of Nelson Mandela, she’s been a mouthpiece for the world.

Born in Indonesia, she kicked off her career in Australia by translating Chinese-language films for SBS in 1980. After she started to present the SBS World News weekend bulletin in 1988, there was no stopping her.

Chin not only became a fixture of weekend evenings, but also expanded her presence with must-follow social media musings, multiple variety shows and comedy skits on SBS Viceland — becoming the first ever personality from SBS to be nominated for the Gold Logie, an award given to the most popular Australian TV personality. No doubt  that “The Chin” is a figure for Australians, young and old!

Chin didn’t give any clear reason for her decision. “There’s not one big reason, there’s many small to medium-sized reasons, which for the time being I wish to keep to myself but may talk about one day,” she says. The prominent and stylish newsreader will deliver her last bulletin for SBS World News on Sunday July 29. But let it be clear: The fashion icon is not retiring, as she said so herself.

“One reason I shall reveal however is that working two days a week didn’t give me enough time to devote to the pub and re-reading the complete works of Shakespeare. So now that I work zero days that issue has been addressed.”

We wish Chin the best on her future endeavours and want to let her know she will always be welcome in the Eurovision family!
