The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has travelled to Denmark to review the songs competing in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019. Today we review Marie Isabell with her country-tinged song “Dancing with You in My Heart”. Are we dancing along or is there no room in our hearts for Marie Isabell? Read on to find out.

Marie Isabell — “Dancing with You in My Heart”

“Dancing with You in My Heart” reviews

Cinan: When the song started, my first thought was, “Wow this is gonna be a good song.” As it progressed, I realised it is not as good as I thought at first. I loved the instrumental but the singing needs improvement. The song itself is a bit lazy like it is not written for the Eurovision stage. I wish Marie Isabell good luck.

Score: 5/10

Julian: I like the beginning of “Dancing with You in My Heart”. It promises a well-produced song and there are positive vibes while hearing it. But to be honest, the song does not elevate when it comes to the refrain. It could be a good song played in the background of a movie beginning but that’s it. Neither the song nor the singer develop during the 3 minutes.

Score: 2.5/10

Robyn: There’s something really likeable about this song. It is absolute power pop with a slight country edge. There’s an unexpected echo of the Scissor Sisters’ “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin'”, but delivered with a softer feeling. The only weak point is the key change, which feels more like filler than a genuine artistic decision.

Score: 7/10

Florian: The approach is much appreciated but the song lost me once that repetitive chorus kicked in. The song is totally fine, but there’s nothing in it that makes it memorable. Even during the final bit, it doesn’t feel like there’s a new touch added to the whole entry.

Score: 4.5/10

Deban: Bopping like a pop-country throwback that didn’t quite make the final cut of Kylie Minogue’s Golden LP, “Dancing with You in My Heart” is lazy at best. Packed with a familiarity that sounds formulaic, it’s difficult to imagine this track advancing beyond this national selection.

Score: 5/10

This song has one of my favourite melodic hooks so far this year. (The melisma on “You”.) However, once it is used a few times for the Chorus, the song gets stuck on it and doesn’t want to develop on it much… until the Key Change tries to save it, a little. I must admit I thought of the Bee Gees when I first heard this track, but Robyn’s Scissor Sisters comparison is much closer in rhythm and arrangement. The vocal is straight out of the Bible belt USA country playlist, which gives this entry a bit of a parody… Read more »

I like her spirit. These spirits don’t usually make good music, but for the Danish selection, it’s downright average.

Her headshot picture reminds me of Anja’s from 2017/16. 🙂

Dancing with You in My Heart – It’s a really nice song. It’s quite simple, but genuinely warm and cute. The verses are obviously more creative than the chorus, and while the song doesn’t develop as much as it should, it’s enjoyable this way too. I’d like to see country music in ESC from someone other than the Netherlands too. I won’t be sad if this wins, but there are better options. – 7/10
