Australia’s Kate Miller Heidke is defying gravity and music conventionalities in her Eurovision 2019 entry “Zero gravity“. This song is a very much a “hybrid project” that goes beyond genre and blends opera with electronic pop.
“Zero Gravity” is about a period of depression and Kate says that “the song tries to capture the feeling of coming out of that fog”. For Kate, that was an incredible relief and there was a sense of “elation” that came with that.
That’s why the lyrics use phrases like “stone in my shoe”, “I’ve been aching” or “You’re so heavy, I have got to let you go”: she needs to put all that aside, and place it where there’s “zero gravity”, where nothing that held her down before affects here anymore.
And then there’s the end, the big boom moment, the “nothing holding me down”. She’s overcome her struggles and escaped from depression.

“Zero gravity” lyrics – “Kate Miller Heidke (Australia Eurovision 2019)
It’s me again
Hey you
Stone in my shoe
Feeling low
You’re so heavy
I have got to let you go
Gravity
Zero
Gravity
Zero gravity
I’m free, oh
Lock with no key
Hey you (hey you, hey you, hey you)
Earth with no sea
On the ground
You’re so heavy
I can’t let you keep me down anymore
Gravity
Zero
Gravity
(And it feels like) oh-oh-oh
(And it feels like) ah-ah-ah
(And it feels like) ah-ah-ah
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down now
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down now
Nothing holding me down
Gravity (nothing holding me down now, nothing holding me down)
Zero (nothing holding me down, nothing holding me down)
Gravity (nothing holding me down now, nothing holding me down)
Zero (nothing holding me down, nothing holding me down)
Gravity (nothing holding me down now, nothing holding me down)
Zero (nothing holding me down, nothing holding me down)
