It’s time to kick off day eight of Eurovision 2021 second rehearsals. Today, the six automatic qualifiers take to the stage for another run-through. First up are the acts from Italy, Germany and The Netherlands. Will we see any dramatic changes? Let’s find out…
Eurovision 2021 second rehearsals: Italy, Germany and The Netherlands
Italy’s Måneskin “Zitti E Buoni” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal
Oliver: Måneskin are switching up their look today. Now, the band are dressed in studded crimson leather and lace. Damiano and Ethan are in haute couture overalls, chests exposed. Thomas and Victoria are in suits — the guitarist is topless beneath his blazer, and the bassist has huge plumes of fabric hanging from her sleeves. Everything else remains the same and it’s just as good as last time, if anything a little more sexy. Rome 2022 is a strong possibility.

Padraig: Måneskin are looking very comfortable with their new status as one of the bookmakers’ favourites to win Eurovision 2021. The pressure definitely isn’t getting to them, and all four looked as chill as ever. They’ve switched up their outfits so that they’re all in the same burgundy colour scheme with what looks to be gold trimmings. Damiano’s costume is particularly eye-catching. It’s much more glam. And while his abs are no longer visible, he still oozes sex appeal. The pyro bombardment at the end remains a wow moment.

Germany’s Jendrik “I Don’t Feel Hate” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal
Oliver: You can’t help but smile watching Jendrik. He loves the stage. In the first rehearsal it sometimes got the better of him, but this time he’s pacing himself better as the song builds so he can channel his energy into the more intense moments of the song. He still gets out breath every now and then but it doesn’t detract from the overall performance. It may be parodical and whimsical, but all in all this is well executed.

Padraig: Germany remains three minutes of bonkers. The explosion of colours, the crazy dance moves and the annoyingly catchy melody are an assault on all the senses. And yet again Jendrik is having an absolutely super-duper time. However, he’s doing so much jumping, dancing and generally everything except standing still, that he begins to lose steam. He’s breathless for much of the performance and still struggles to get all the lyrics out in some of the wordier parts. Nonetheless, this is great fun.

The Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy “Birth of a New Age” — Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal
Oliver: The only minor adjustment we see is to Jeangu’s outfit. His royal blue suit remains, but the black and red body harness is gone and he’s now wearing black crystal-studded bangles around his biceps. It’s slightly more flattering. Every time he performs, Jeangu’s beaming smile lights up the whole Rotterdam Ahoy arena and it’s wonderful to see. And of course, his vocal is silky smooth as always. The home team should be very proud of this entry.

Padraig: Another credible performance from the hosts. Jeangu still exudes soul and warmth while also getting across an extremely powerful message. Apart from some small adjustments to his outfit, there wasn’t much change from Thursday. While this is unlikely to be troubling the top of the scoreboard, it’s an important entry to have in this year’s line-up. And Eurovision 2021 is much richer for having it.

Hey, what do you think about Roxen – Romania . That song sounds amazing! She has a great voice! Could it be the dark horse this year????
Italy – At this point, they’re just teasing us, I desperately need to see the whole thing! Something tells me we don’t know their final outfits yet.
Germany – This seems VERY hyperactive. If it’s good or bad, it’s up to how each one feel about it.
Netherlands: Captivating is the word I use for this one. Jeangu has such a reassuring presence.
I like the red!!
Italy will win. Or France
Would be fab – either one of Italy or France – but I still think it´s Valletta 2022.
Destiny will be the one scoring best with both juries and the televoters, I think.
Italy will probably win the televoting though.
Italy serving up top quality entries since 2015 and now Italian ‘rock chic’ – go Italia, you deserve to win!
That’s quite high praise for Germany on wiwibloggs.
He looks great doesnt he! He looks confident and happy with how the performance has shaped up. It’s pleasing to see 🙂
We might need Obi-Wan Kenobi for such a high hope — but it’s a nice thought 🙂
Grow was in my Top 3 last year – sincere, heartfelt, thoughtful, poignant, I really admire Jeangu’s songwriting.
Can never remember, but think it starts with an 0
lol
All the snippets are out and unironically every single one of all three was amazing
The snippets are too short or me to judge which works better on camera
I am prepared that I could well be very wrong, but I simply do not get the hype around Italy winning. It’s route to victory is not straight forward, and I fear if they did top the public vote, the end result would be a much less dramatic keiino situation with juries putting them around 10th. I understand that it is quality, but I don’t believe it has broad appeal – sorry!
I agree Kenny, the higher quality 2nd rehearsal clip only confirms my opinion that it’s extremely repetitive, I think plenty of viewers will breathe a sigh of relief after Italy’s 3 minutes is up. We forget here that many people will be hearing the songs for the first time when the sit down in front of their televisions next week and wont be analysing things like us anoracks. Also I’m not sure that the demographic who might like this type of music are ESC fans, my nephews and nieces in their teen and twenties look at me in disdain when… Read more »
In both Italy and France the repetiveness make sense. If you understand Italian the lyrics adds to it. Both are real quality. I am so happy that real song writes-artists Are performing their own songs. This is not the case with Malta, Cyprus, Switzerland and Bulgaria. I hope the public will acknowledge that.
Stop being so condescending Helene, I have pretty decent Italian, (you’re not the only one you know). I think you’re a bit blinded by your love of the song and when I say repetitive I’m particularly referring to it’s melody. It doesn’t matter if they are quoting Dante or effing and blinding in the lyrics as 90% of people watching wont understand them so it all hinges on having a decent melody.
First and foremost, Italy has second half. Secondly, Italy has a track record of getting people to vote for them. Think Mahmood, Il Volvo, in 2018, 2013 etc with a wide variety of styles.
Although my prediction is 12th-4th. How can you not reward it. It stands out so much.
I hope Germany won’t end last this year. Jendrik is so devoted and radiates positivity. I will really feel sorry if it happens. Yes the song is bad. But it’s not as bad to be last.
Guys Italy will perform on the second half of the grand final!!
I bet they’ll close the final as Italy always does.
I hope not this time! It has killed their chance way too often!!!
I don’t think they will close the final. Most probably they will perform somewhere towards the end like Mahmood.
If UK is in the 2nd half James will close the final. I guess Italy will be between 20-24
Hmm, I would say it would be better for a good-vibes song to start the grand final, just like Belgium in 2016, or Israel in 2017, or even Malta in 2019, so the UK would be a nice show starter!
Are there any news about the half-draws for Big 5?
I could be wrong but I don’t think any draw is made until all the semi final qualifiers are added.
I think after each semi, the qualifiers pick in a draw if they are first half or second half, then the producers allocate the running order.
Netherlands is 23 though in the final, they picked that last year at the semi allocation draw:
Never mind it’s just after happening lol
Yes, I just saw thay Italy got 2nd half
Although I love also the new costumes of Italy, I somehow think the ones of the first rehearsal was more natural rock group material. This is more styled.
Can’t wait to see the snippet for france and italy second rehearsal which will not be long now, even it’s snippet but it shows how it will be on eurovision screen, I have said this right from the beginning that France and Italy fir top 3, including Switzerland but Switzerland chorography disappointed me not sure where they are going now. But love to see italy france top 2 which is very very likely Italy will rock the stage with lively group and rock song, contemporary and contender, both juries and televoters will like it. The lyrics and music are perfect… Read more »
I don’t understand what’s so sexy about Damiano, seriously. I’m a gay man but I can’t find any sex-appeal in a man dressed like that. Maybe I would find him more sexy if I were a straight man, I don’t know.
Labels are all a bit queer anyway.
I think Elena probably did sell something to the devil—because I’m also a ‘gay man’ and I find her to be by far the sexiest entrant this year. She’s stunning, mesmerising. Her stylists do a really good job with her ‘glowy’ look.
Me neither Benji, gay here also and there is nothing I find remotely attractive about him but got a lot of down votes for saying this after the first rehearsal
That’s only at the after-after-party.
For a straight woman he is very good looking.
I truly believe Italy will win. They have the song, the staging and the memorable act.
Italy got this!
Hopefully it’s not a repeat of other times where they win the televote but because of the juries they end up in 3rd place.
Italy gives us something to look forward to every year. About time they won.
Italy, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia are my winners. With San Marino as the guilty pleasure bop, that won’t win but will give me joy for 3 minutes.
Ah look at that Vanilla! Same winners!
I’d like Belgium and Ireland in the final too but probably not going to happen, so on the Saturday I’m going to be Bulgarian, with Russian, Ukrainian and Italian descent.
For me it is Italy, Iceland, Russia, Ukraine.
I am a bit disappointed, non of the main wiwibloggers rooting for Italy.
It has no Swedish involvement probably that’s why
Yes thats why its a awful song…
Italy in 2nd place on bettinlist, is this a joke. I cant belive it. 0/10
Sorry but I think Italy is a lot of noise…. don’t like it at all
I think Italy must win this year. They deserve it, and if not now then when. And just imagine them winning, what a show it will be during winner’s performance. It would be a great end for Eurovision 2021. Fiery, energetic and on a super high note.
Let’s give Italy what they finally deserve. A victory.
Just a shower thought, we can already see in the polls, the odds, almost everywhere, that the rivalry between Switzerland and Malta ultimately made them almost cancel one another, leaving France and Italy as fan-favourites, which is the DEFINITION of Karma (oops reference)
Fan-favourites or bookmakers-favourites? There’s no chance that Italy would winn any ESC-fan-poll. Capito?
At least that’s what I see almost everywhere, the only app/website/blog that resists still is the My Eurovision Scoreboard app, where they’re still the two favourites
Covinced sounds like you’ve been convinced by covid.
Stay safe, remain uncovinced!
The definition of healthy scepticism.
I’ve never seen them perform twice with the same outfit, so I think there might be more surprises to come
Italy is so winning this year, only France can stop them…
France and *possibly* Iceland or Bulgaria. I don’t think we should count them out.
I think an Italy win would be wonderful! I love to see songs come alive on the big stage!
There’s a typo on Italy’s description, it says that Damiano and Ethan are topless but then you say that Ethan and Victoria wear a suit
Italy is a real banger this year. The song is extremely catchy and it’s not stupid. Guys are performing very well, vocals are strong. And, yeah, frontman is hot. Of course, I won’t vote for sexuality, but as a heterosexual women I’m pleased.
