Around 80 acts will soon be making their way to San Marino as the microstate begins the live auditions for its national final Una voce per San Marino. Broadcaster SMRTV has confirmed the names of the first group of acts who will be auditioning in the emerging artist category.

Among the acts are a few names that maybe familiar to Eurovision fans. Austrian singer Sara de Blue was previously one of the five wildcard hopefuls in Austria’s national final for Eurovision 2016. But she made even more of an impact in 2018 when she entered San Marino’s previous national final 1IN360.

The blue-haired singer made it to the grand final with her song “Out of the Twilight”. The fan favourite song finished second, just two points behind the overall winner.

This time she will be auditioning as a duo with the jazz-pop singer Jack Marsina. The pair have performed together before, including a jazzy Christmas show.

Also trying their luck is another familiar name from 1IN360 — and many Eurovision national finals. Swedish twins Ylva & Linda will be auditioning.

The duo are best known among Eurovision fans for their songwriting contributions in national finals. While the twins have never had a song in their home country’s national final Melodifestivalen, in recent years they have had songs in national finals of Lithuania, Moldova, Belarus and Norway among others.

In 2018 they entered San Marino’s 1IN360 national final, but didn’t make it to any of the competitive rounds. This time they back back, hoping for another chance to realise their Eurovision dream.

Another notable name on the list of auditioning acts is the Italian comedy heavy metal group Nanowar of Steel. The group formed in 2003 and has since been serving their unique brand of rock to fans. They may be yet another rock act to be inspired by Måneskin’s Eurovision rock win earlier this year.

The auditioning acts will head to San Marino for the initial live auditions to be held from 13 to 15 December. Further auditions will be held in January. Public entries are still open and will close on 10 January.

Auditioning acts will have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs for their audition in San Marino.

The event was earlier named by San Marino’s government as part of a series of events to revitalise the microstate’s tourist industry. Tourism plays a major part in San Marino’s economy but it has recently taken a hit from reduced visitor numbers due to the pandemic.

San Marino’s new national final

After the initial casting auditions, around 40 shortlisted emerging artists will compete in four semi-finals, a second chance round and a final. The nine highest placed acts will qualify for the overall grand final.

They will be joined by nine others in the established artists category. These artists won’t have to audition and will be directly invited to compete.

The 18 finalists — nine emerging artists and nine established artists — will compete in the grand final on 19 February. The winner, second and third places will be selected by an expert jury alone.

What do you think? Which names are you excited to see? Will San Marino’s act for Turin come from this group?

I even found a couple that could be in Spanish. Maybe someone from Spain or Latin America? 😀

If San Marino plays right, she can have her best result in history. Serhat holds the title for 3 years now. It’s awkward honestly…

Cassidy Civet is trying. OMG, I did want Nanowar of Steel, but Cassidy is the furry that has appeared in the last two year’s fan recaps!

So the anti-furry brigade are in town then. Cassidy is a very talented person.

good to see many Italian artists but Sara should try with Austria and not SM. what they did to her in 2018 was horrible, they stole her victory for another girl with connections. they harshly criticised her even though she was the best they had and instead they send a cheesy, copycat song with robots.

He’s not known in Greece, at least not this decade.

Sara de Blue’s defeat still hurts a lot. Not just because “Out of the Twilight” had the potential to be the best result ever for San Marino, but also because it lost to one of the weakest entries Eurovision had recently.

I still don’t understand that out of all San Marino’s songs in 2018 they choose the one that won. I expected more because they could choose any artist of any country. I wish Sara much luck this year!

Speculation re: your question: San Marino performed in the second semifinal with Malta there and Germany voting in that semi. It could be that the song ended up winning because of alleged potential for votes in the big contest. One of the duo was from Malta, and one from Germany.

The thing is that even if they got 24 points from both of them, they would be dreaming about getting enough points from the other countries to qualify with that song and performance. If it was strategy, it was a very poorly thought one.

In the worst case scenario, I think she would land in the middle of the scoreboard in the final, but with the right presentation San Marino could even get a top 10. It had both jury and televote appeal.

Ylva and linda need to stop tbh. Their songs (either their own or the one they write for other NFS) are mediocre at best, cringy AF and not listenable.
So can we not let them go through.

I feel like Giovanni and Tinashe are also from 1in360? Montalbano and Makura? In any case, I’m very pleased with this turnout! Excited to give them a listen. And hooray for Sara De Blue being back!

there are actually some interesting names in that list. among the sea of individuals who haven’t updated their style since the last century we have original rock bands, rappers and fresh alternative pop acts.

Sara was my winner of 1IN360 so I hope she will be selected like that I could at least listen her entry. Is it me or some broadcasters have decided this year to complicate the way to select their NF semi finalists and finalists..maybe a new trend to show that they take the thing more seriously but it’s more complex to follow I will need a reminder for each NF lol ….so let’s see for them if it will pay. Celebrate diversity of NFs

Nanowar of Steel could actually be a great choice. While they weren’t typical joke entries, Dadi, The ROOP and Hatari proved the voters still appreciate having some fun as well.
