D’oh! I had to take a second look at the lineup. Victor Crone (2019 for Estonia) and Jon Henrik in the first heat; Wiktoria and Panetoz in the 2nd heat; and Mariette in the final heat with Loreen…

…That is a minefield for Loreen to cross if she wants to go to Liverpool. The 3rd heat is undoubtedly the easiest.

I’m late for the party here, and I honestly I didn’t expect Loreen to try again.

They should have put her on the second weekend, and I hope she stuck with the alternative sound she’s been pumping out ever since “Statements”. Quite frankly, I hope it is reminiscent of “’71 Charger”!

Top-3 at MF if she mesmerizes without overthinking the stage setup, like she did with “Statements”. If she mesmerizes and wins, she could be the overwhelming favorite on the spot, depending on who Ukraine and the U.K. send.

Tusse won MF in 2021 (jury and public vote) but ended up 14th at Eurovision. That would probably be considered a poor showing for Sweden.

We have not always done well. In 2010 we didn’t even got to the final. In Melodifestivalen we have an international jury and for the most part, the song that wins got the most votes from the jury. I think that is one of the reason it goes well for the jury in Eurovision as well. Btw, most Swedes don’t even like having the jury in Melodifestivalen.

I know we havent heard the songs yet BUT: I am most excited about some of the new ones??? I mean we all already know that Wiktoria, Mariette etc probably won’t win. Loreen will surely win because of Euphoria

Smash Into Pieces has some really good songs, especially The Rain and Sleepwalking, and the last time so far hard rock went to the finale was 2013 so i hope their song is good. The same applies to Signe & Hjördis, Laurell Barker, Eden, Marcus & Martinus, Tennessee Tears, Kiana and Rejhan.

melfest provides a huge streaming and publicity boost to artists that compete so not everyone competes because they want to go to eurovision. of course anyone participating would go if they won, but if not then they’ve made new fans and shared new music that people otherwise may have not listened to

Same old crap every year. Same songwriters involved in multiple entries so expect the same tone as in previous years.

Anderz Wrethow (5 songs) Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt (5 songs), Jimmy Jansson (5 songs), Thomas G:son (four songs).

What happened to involvinh new scongwriters this year? Tired of hearing Anderz Wrethov and Jimmy “Joker” in every song every year (last year they were involved in four songs; this year five!). Enough already.

I feel like with “Hold Me Closer” winning last year, and the team behind that, the Swedish public made it clear that they were ready for something different and more authentic.
Of course, the show producers ignore this and go with more of the same because, you know, Sweden.

Or becasue a majority of songwriters do not want to take part? Even today most writers want nothing to do with the festival, they see it as to compromising to their creativity. So you have to choose from what you have.

Just wanted to add to what happens during the summer. The major music labels search for the big artists and arranges bootcamps where they write music together with songwriters. Yes, the labels prefer using established songwriters that also wants to participate in the competition. When Björkman was new he revolutionised the selection process. Writers from one label was matched with an artist from another label. He made sure “never let it go” was changed into a disco track and not given to one of the established female singers. Instead he gave it to a group. This all changed now when… Read more »

Something that a lot of people have forgotten, or perhaps wasn’t aware of if they didn’t read Swedish newspapers at the time, that there was a lot of controversy about “Statement” in the Swedish media. Not so much about the song, but mainly the performance. One of the “characters” that was portrayed was the “The Woman with the Handbag” (Read the Wikipedia article if you want more historical context). This woman killed herself, so her children really begged Loreen not to use the part with their mom in the performance. It was a lot about this in the Swedish media… Read more »

It is not that she is not liked or loved, she is just not relevant to most Swedes. Like I said she is known and most people would know about her but she is not some diva or the biggest pop star around. She won ESC yes, but that does not mean we owe her anything. What happened is that she decided herself what kind of career she wants. Here she is known as “Loreen”, the eccentric reclusive artist who pops up every six months or so with a new project and then disappears again. And it’s not only songs.… Read more »

Out of the 2824 songs received, i refuse to believe that 6 out of the 28 chosen entries are written by the same guy. Do other song writers exist? Because here we clearly have a case of the same people over and over again but the fandom is silent, in other cases they are the first to trashtalk songwriters and directors

Yes. It looks strange. But remember it’s not 2824 unique composers. Also the producers chooses half of the field. They can pick an artist and put in a song that was never in the selection process.

Some of these composers just sends a lot of songs to competitions (in Sweden, elsewhere ).

Also they’ve already tried reducing the most common songwriters, but then the new composers makes less good music and what happens is you just find new composers that will top the list of most used composers

I think Heat 3 – Agree with Paul and twins but i feel like there are 2 options – 1, Nordman and Casanovas to fill top 4 or they will cancel each other and Laurel/Melanie could go through – interesting heat as well

Heat 4 – i think actually twins and Axel will make it futher …

As usual none of these Deltävlings are though, since the producers make it sure there’s not too many good songs at once. Some artists like THEOZ got advance this year because the voting crashed, so he might be out. Maria has her backstory that might gain votes also. Nordman and Casanovas are fighting for the same voting groups top votes, and if they’re both fighting for the spots 3rd and 4th, they might cancel each other out to even lower and not qualify. In Deltävling 4 there seems to be pretty clear people going forward in my view, but we’ll… Read more »

The fact that only a handful of songwriters seem to be behind this year’s entries is problematic for a number of reasons. Nevertheless we can’t know anything for sure until we hear the songs. Loreen being back is really promising and alongside Jon Henrik, they have the two songs I am looking forward to listening the most!

Victor Crone, Wiktoria, Jon Henrik, Paul Rey, Axel Schylstrom, Eva & Ewa, and Loreen are all artists whose previous songs I have ranked very high, with most of their entries still being on my yearly NF playlists (Victor and Loreen also with their ESC songs). So, needless to say, I am very hyped for this year’s MF. Perhaps it’s even the most hype I had for it in years. However, I do agree that most of the entries having 4-7 of the same authors is problematic for reasons of diversity and monopolyzation of the selection. While I do think that… Read more »

Victor Crone’s songs have always ranked high on my tops as they are really pleasant and upbeat. However they are unfortunately a bit mainstream and that’s a problem I come across really often in Melfest (hence it’s probably one of the NFs that I follow the least out of the strong ones). However, the fact tht Cornelia won last year with a song that successfully combines mainstream and alternative elements gives me hope that Sweden can see that they have to also go a bit off the beaten path to engage viewers. They are the best when it comes to… Read more »

Some of my favorite ESC entries are mainstream, including Victor’s (my 4th from 2019). I can, under the right circumstances, totally fall in love with a mainstream song. I mean, even Eurovision winners are within mainstream. It’s neither good or bad on its own. The bad aspect, for me, is when the number of mainstream songs per selection outnumbers other genres and styles. That’s when people feel the fatigue, and even the better entries can get lost. Melfest indeed does that a lot. I hope that Cornelia’s much deserving win helps mid-tempo and low-tempo songs be incorporated more. With a… Read more »

PS. Also, this aspect: When mainstream songs are good, they can, for me, be as good as indie or genre counterparts. However, when mainstream songs are bad, they tend to be bad in a way that’s tedious and feels like they could be taken out of the line-up with nothing lost. At least when genre songs are bad, they most often can still feel somewhat creative.

Yes I feel the exact same way! That’s why some mediocre (but not bad) mainstream songs may feel worse than a bad song of an alternative genre. And some songs that are mainstream can also be ranked high because they are good at what they do. But I do crave diversity at ESC. Anyways, really looking forward to listening to this year’s Melfest’s songs!

Having one or two songs isn’t an issue, but these top 6 names with 4 songs or over are giving us an overload for a single selection. No matter how talented they are, this is too much!

One to two songs for a year doesn’t seem much, but when it happens almost every year it shows how small the circle really is.

I see that re-appearing each year shows the limited pool range. I have to be the devil’s advocate here and say that not every established songwriter or performer has the same burning desire to be featured at ESC at all, so I fully understand the re-entering of ones who do. And most of them are talented enough to cross the bar of entrance. Even if for some of them, taking a year off might be beneficial. But being your own competition x6 is where the line should definitely be drawn by the broadcaster. 😉

I do understand a lot of artists, songwriters & producers don’t want their name associated with Eurovision, but we’re here talking about a country with 10+ million people that receives around 2,5k entries every year, and somehow out of 28 competing entries we seem to have people who’ve been part around 1/4 to entries competing.

I’m not saying the songs are bad, I do enjoy mainstream music, but when opportunities are handed to a small group of people it all kinda starts to eat the variety and diversity away.

It’s Jimmy’s song against Jimmy’s song type of situation.

Both you and Yeah do make a point. Perhaps a set of fresh eyes in the selection jury is needed, even if most of the repeated artists are good in what they do. Having more newcomers might do well too.

I mainly wonder that if the 2,8k entries were listened anonymously, and then SVT invited half of the acts, how some people get in with multiple songs each year. A public broadcaster which gets reasonable amount of tax payers money should be known for being honest to the public.

But not every songwriter wants to take part in Melodifestivalen. A majority of songwriters here do not want anything to do with it, they believe it compromise their artistry. SVT wants nothing more than to have new blood but they can not get it so they have to choose from what they got. Like for ages now they have wanted writers like Laleh, Agnes, Salem Al Fakir and they have pursued them but there was no interest so they simply gave up on them

no, that is a secret. But Melodifestivalen is still seen as something undesirable among major songwriters here.It is to common for most of them and they want to stay creative. Back in the days, around 2010-2011 SVT was keen on wanting Robyn there after her “Dancing on My Own” sucees but she simply laughed it of. And that is the major issue to this day.

I would not call it mediocrity. There are talented performers in there. And it is probably the biggest selection show since it is like ESC. But it is not only a selection show. The final is yes but it is more than a selection show.

SVT still hasn’t done more to make sure other songwriters, producers or singers would be willing to take part. And with so many songs having the usual writers they make this more inclusive to a small group of people.

Everything is going well now, but what if these people who are in such a big role in many songs decide not to participate anymore? Then there’s a big problem to deal with.

Denis

Well they can’t exactly force anybody to take part , can they?
And they are trying to acknowledge others. They have a songwriting camp aimed at mostly new talent who wants to take part in Mello. But it looks like it is not going to well with it. Surprisingly since that is how Cornelia won..

All SVT can do is to ask what would make other songwriters and producers interested in taking part and of course it’s up to labels to search for new talent too.

Very stacked as usual. and very interesting mix..
Looks like the new boss Karin Gunnarsson wants to mix mainstream with unknown acts and continue like last year. I am all for it, it made MF more exciting to watch..
That said I am not sold on Mariette. Again. 6th time with the exactly same song. Unfortunately women in MF seem to be cursed and only be MF artists, with no career outside it. I can only hope Cornelia will manage to move on from MF,,

I often have mixed feelings about this – which has occurred every year since2005. There can be some gems from nations with small pools (Bulgaria, Moldova, San Marino) and from artists with a large reach (Russia’s chief asset with Dima and Sergei) but also some less good or some judged against their superior work if they return too soon from nations with larger talent pools (Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Norway)

Early years of the ESC had seen Corry Brokken, Lys Assia and Domenico Modugno returning for a second and third time. Who gets to perform in the contest is up to the broadcasters taking part and the EBU is usually hands off with that.

If you want to ban performers from returning, you should also ban songwriters. Also instruments, if Lithuania used a saxophone one year, they can never use it again. Same with strings, piano.

What a stupid comment. I don’t know if this is calling Sweden out specifically or all countries in Eurovision, But like I said in Comments before, Lots of countries have reoccurring artists in their national finals, not just Sweden yet they always get the heat for it. Do I hear people complaining about Estonia reusing artists (Which is understandable considering they have a small population), or Italy bringing back certain names year after year? If you are referring to artists that return to Eurovision, some of our winners won on their second or third attempt.

I love tattoos and I love Loreen! My absolute winner no matter what the song, what the other countries will send.. lol

Jokes a side, I still believe that if she would compete in 2017 she would win again. Statements was a one piece of art work.

We will never know. I liked Statements but I think public would have felt lost with this song. Plus I don’t think she would have beaten Salvador Sobral. Something really special happened with him back in May 2017 and all Europe felt it. He wasn’t my winner though.
