The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 37 competing songs in Eurovision 2023. Next we review Latvia, who have chosen Sudden Lights with “Aijā”.

Did we drift off to sleep whilst listening to the song? Read on to find out!

Sudden Lights – “Aijā” (Latvia Eurovision 2023)

Review: Sudden Lights – “Aijā”

Deban: For those that recognise good music, you’d appreciate “Aijā” for being a solid offering. It is melodic, understated, and packed with raw emotion. A self-composed entry by a band that has birthed three quality LPs over the course of ten years. This year’s Latvian entry is undoubtedly one of their best musical efforts to date, and it marks a true representation of Sudden Lights’ longevity and quality craftsmanship.

Score: 9

Simon: A kind of aggressive lullaby from Latvia? I get a bit confused about the build-up of this song, because on one hand it takes me into a dreamy kind of universe, but on the other hand the heavy break-beat is off-putting to me. It takes me almost two minutes of the song to feel the vibe and the last 45 seconds are nice and soothing but it’s not enough for me to really like it as much as I could.

Score: 4

Rick: This is one of the songs I’d also listen to outside of Eurovision. I really enjoy the alternative rock mixed with “electro beats” – if that’s how you can call the music style. There’s also a very emotional, sensitive vibe and Latvia can be proud of this entry since it’s still very authentic but also accessible. My only concern is that I overlooked it at first and this could fail to stand out without special staging.

Score: 7

Diego: There are several elements that make “Aijā” a very special song, starting with its message and meaningful lyrics but also its time signature that can be very attention-grabbing since it doesn’t fit neatly into an easy to understand rhythm. We know they have great plans and they are ambitious regarding what they can do in Liverpool and I hope the best is yet to come. Even if I personally don’t connect as well as I would love to with the song, it is definitely growing every time I see their live performances and I would be very glad to see Latvia in the final!

Score: 5.5

Oliver: Every Eurovision cycle needs a tearjerker anthem. And with “Aijā”, Latvia has delivered just that. Sudden Lights bring a unique brand of indie alt-rock to Liverpool, perfectly produced and packed with poignancy. The vocals are expertly controlled and the boys know how to perform live, but a wardrobe overhaul and staging rejig is needed to tie the performance together – and with so many bands in the mix, Sudden Lights need to create a wow moment to secure qualification. Fingers crossed Latvia can find its way back into a Eurovision final.

Score: 7.5

Shocking score. I listen to progressive/alternative/post-rock privately, and this is failing in every single box it tries to tick, but somehow people who, I assume, don’t listen to this type of music are falling for it.

Nothing against Aija, I am glad this type of music is on ES scene, but this is not a good representative of it. They simply are not a great band, sorry.

I listen to progressive rock privately, and I definitely am “falling” for Sudden Lights! I don’t think you should see them as representing any genre. They’re representing themselves, and Latvia.

I’ve been tallying first place votes and Top10s/8s and above very unscientifically for my personal amusement, and this song is killing it. I only count more firsts for Italy, and no other country has the same breadth of support. We still have the real heavy hitters of Sweden, Finland and Spain coming up, but I wouldn’t have expected this.

This is also gunning for the pretentious song of the year award, but the Netherlands actually take that prize.

At least Latvia’s instrumental is nice, and the part in Latvian is nice too. But I can do without it in the final, especially being in SF1.

So yeah, the Latvian part sounds nice, but the English lyrics are cringe. Again, why do people who struggle with the English language insist on writing songs in English? The lyrics just come out really awkward. Unless you’re Iru from Georgia. Weirdly enough, I like her nonsensical song.

It’s a great song but I can’t get past the phrasing of some of the lyrics and it sounds wrong, like in family guy where they have the Scandinavian people pretending to be English. When he says right words at the right times, I feel like it should be right words at the right time. Just a personal opinion but that’s why I can’t get on board with this song.

I won’t lie: the first time I listened to it, the beat in the beginning of the track distracted me to the point I haven’t even listed it as one of my favorites in Supernova. But people kept talking about it, I gave it another chance and… Boy, how wrong I was to dismiss it! Since then, “Aija” kept growing on me and I dare to say it’s the most beautifully written entry of the year. The lyrics are simple, but the sweetest. The vocals and the instrumental are layered and take me on a journey every single time. What… Read more »

You are right about that opening beat being a bit of an eyebrow-raiser, glad that it didn’t put you off long-term though. And am so happy that you feel this strongly about this entry, Sabrina!
It’s not often that all of the year-on-year commenters all like the same entry to this extent, and the fact that it’s a song that’s currently sitting in the bottom three of the odds is just crazy!

Hopefully “Aija” will be this year’s “Mall”, another song that was completely overlooked by the odds, had a very vocal and loyal fanbase and ended up qualifying. Reading how much people love it gives me some hope. It’s for sure the song outside the top 10 of the odds with the most engaged fanbase. Let’s see if we’ll be enough.

Being a Latvia fan, it makes me so happy to see that this song is growing on people. It’s such a beautiful song, combining alt rock with lullaby vibes. Definitely one of my favorites from Latvia. But I’m quite concerned about their chances. I hope there’ll be a change in the Eurovision staging cause their nf and pre-party performances have been the same. You can’t understand how happy I am about having Sudden Lights in Eurovision. I got hypnotised by their 2018 attempt in Supernova “Just Fine”. It was my fav song in that NF season and I was so sad it didn’t make it to Eurovision. “Aija” is even better and has more possibilites of appealing the wide audience (though it has been growing on me since it was realeased). The lighting, the lead voice, the guitars, the beat, the lyrics… In short: everything; this song generates a warm atmosphere full of emotion that totally carry me away. It’s a song I’d… Read more »

Bettings historically have always pushed western countries in the top. We all know that UK and Spain for example won’t do as good as betting shows expect. Smaller countries always seem to do better than betting odds.

Beautiful alternate rock song. Wonderfully experimental with the various instruments, switching from electronic keyboards to electric guitars and becoming a proper rock song etc. Lyrically, it is more than one can possibly ask for, extremely dark and genuely emotional. The inderterminate melodic rhythm is one of the entry’s greatest aspects. The final 30 seconds of the lullaby are the entire essence of the entry. Absolutely magical. It hasn’t quite clicked on me that much since the beggining but I simply cannot underestimate the beauty of this composition. It belongs in my SF1 qualifiers. My #21, with a 7/10 rating. I was already in love with the musical complexities of this song when my daughter placed it in the context of Russia’s overnight invasion of Ukraine on February 24. As an anti-war song written from the perspective of someone who’s country is under seige, Aija is far more impactful than Switzerland’s pacifist Watergun. This one made me cry.

Congratulations Latvia, “Aij?” is my favourite ESC song of 2023. I’m feeling a little better now after my health scare, so I’m going to try to write this comment properly after skipping over the few before this. I know what it’s like to care for someone during a very stressful or tragic time, and this song very much reflects those kinds of feelings. Musically, this is one of the more complex entries in 2023 as well. The drum Intro, Verse 1 and Verse 2 have five beats per bar, so that’s probably 5/4 or 5/8. Quintuple time is quite rare… Read more »

I have to admit that I was a bit lukewarm on this one at first, mainly because the vocal melodies hadn’t clicked with me yet and there was also the matter of fitting all of those different elements cohesively into the 3-minute time limit. I guess I was just holding them to a higher standard because this is absolutely the type of entry that I should be supporting, so I quickly realized I was in the wrong, I still think Aija would have benefited even more with an ESC limit of 3:30 instead but they actually manage to pull it… Read more »

LTV basically have confirmed Supernova for 2024 and 2025 at least, as Music Export Latvia gave some extra money for promotional needs for the winners of Supernova, including Sudden Lights and the following two years.
I do not think non-qualification would ever be the reason for Latvia to withdraw, eurofans just love to make up some stuff in their heads.

Absolutely agree. If I were to pick the 5 non-qualfiiers of semi final one, the easy picks for me are Israel, Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Then the choice between Malta and Serbia is a bit harder, but I would not be upset missing either of those two. Malta is more likely to not qualify, however. What I think will happen is – Israel will qualify and Azerbaijan will not qualify instead. Ireland is another likely non qualifier, and then comes Malta, which still could squeeze through. For me personally, Ireland and Israel would be out, no questions asked. Switzerland and Azerbaijan would be my Qs from the second semi, but here, they just don’t fit in by sheer numbers. I just hope that whatever happens, Azerbaijan continues sending less calculated entries as well. Then I am in a cunundrum, because, ideally, I’d have 11 qualifiers. But as it is, of the performances remain similar, I’d probably leave Netherlands out, which is a shame, cause I really like the song, and wouldn’t mind to see it going through.

Latvia tends to have national finals that are full of really good, Indie-esque songs and few really bad offerings. They also tend to not have an out-and-out obvious Eurovision contender in these national finals so although their selections are decent, their prospects for Eurovision are not so great. However, this year, things went a little differently and, somehow, Latvia ended up with an entry that is probably the best ever thing that they’ve sent to Eurovision. I believe that Eurovision audience will appreciate this beauty and place it not only in the final, but also in Top 12. A fantastic effort from Latvia this year.
