It’s September 1 and the Eurovision New Year has ARRIVED. Songs that are released from today can be submitted for Eurovision 2024.

So we have to ask: What do you hope to see at the song contest in 2024 and on the road to Malmö?

Perhaps you want a country to win for the very first time. Albania, Armenia, Australia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Georgia, Iceland, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia….they’re all waiting for their moment!

Two of the past three winners — Måneskin from Italy and Kalush Orchestra from Ukraine — sang in their native language. Perhaps you want to see another language represented at the top of the podium. If so, which one?

Maybe you’re a member of the press and dream of a slightly beefed up press centre, one that is actually open during the first week. (Press conferences with zero media are so sad). Or maybe you simply want to do your work in peace, noting that “work” in the digital age includes things like livestreams…

Do you dream of a scandal-free voting segment? Maybe you want countries to actually be able to deliver their points rather than experiencing supposed technical difficulties?

Whatever your wish, we want to hear it. Shout out your Eurovision wishes below and let’s dream together!

I had an idea where only the juries from the finalists get to vote but then all the competing countries plus ROW get a televote. So there would be 26 juries and about 40 televote scores giving much more weight to the public while still allowing the juries to reward songs that the public overlook. I don’t think we’ll ever see this in the actual show but I’d like to see the EBU come up with some response to the backlash about the juries.

I would worry that many viewers in the countries who then would not get to vote (which happens to some countries more often than others!) might not watch the final at all – and some countries might eventually lose interest entirely.

Happy new ESC year, everyone! This is me, Colin. I have a new name now, and a new email address! Would it be too confusing for everyone for me to switch it here as well? I’m already on You Tube under this name and address. I know, it’s a big change. I don’t want to confuse everyone. Again, happy start of the new ESC season!

I really don’t understand why they they have not changed yet to 8pm CET kick off time for the final. With 3 to 4hrs+ of show it makes complete sense to bring in more family audiences and increase audiences in general. UK/Iceland/Ireland/Portugal would not mind 7pm as that is still prime time for them and eastern Europe and Israel/Azerbaijan would welcome the earlier start and finish too.

No. The fewer children voting, the better. Just look at Norway and what people end up choosing to send every year because of all the kids who vote — a bunch of childish entries. They already have Junior Eurovision. No need to make the adult Eurovision more attractive for kids.

I hope that we continue competing. As a proud Aussie superfan, I have grown to love Eurovision in the last few years. It is a really captivating show that is a joy to watch every single year. I would hate to see us leave and it looks like there is no news of that right now. But it feels highly likely that we will return at this point for a few reasons. The Australian music industry has welcomed it with open arms We have a devoted commentary team responsible for making it a broadcast here. We provide lots of funding… Read more »

If Australia does come back, I hope the EBU are more upfront and honest about why. In the past, they have hyped up the popularity of the contest down under, the “long history” etc. The portray the country as going into a Eurovision frenzy. In reality, it is the least watched television show on the night. In some countries, it’s the most watched of the year.

Also, can I please ask where you get your funding figures? The EBU exists all year round and consists of much more than just the contest. I find it hard to accept that a small broadcaster like SBS is second only to the Big 5 in terms of funding. Especially when they’re not even a member.

Very true. Lived in Australia until 2020 and it did irk me that EBU would always hype up that Australia is Eurovision crazy and that is why they invite them when that is not the fact. A very small fraction of the population watch it on TV or take an interest. I am however still glad they take part and hope it gets renewed. On the whole they bring quality entries most of the time except, aherm, 2017 and 2021

I can’t see how EBU would not renew Australian participation, and I speak as Spanish/UK/Aussie citizen. With several countries out due to political reasons or lack of interest or funds if they want to keep numbers around 40 they need to invite Australia back. I hope there is an announcement soon 🙂

My only wish is Eurovision without Måns Zelmerlöw, here’s why:

Back in 2018 he wore fake Indigenous clothes (Sámi clothing named Gákti) in a tv show, after he backlashed and was even told by Sámi people that it was not appropriate, as they have been forbidden to wear them previously in public, even put to trial because of it; his resposnse was that he is “sad” that people have to be so “toxic” towards him. He never apologized.

The vlogger Tom has suggested that there should be more guidelines on the buildup of the jurys so that they are as diverse as possible. Less emphasis on pop and more other music styles. Peharps a few people more, so that it is not just 5 per country. Personally, my dream is to hear a Swedish song from Sweden. The last one was in 1998…

To me, complaints about pre-recorded back-up vocals and random running order seems extremely naive about how the show felt 10 years ago. Shownumbers like Chanels and Noas could not be arranged if all the limited people on stage had to be vocalists instead of professional dancers. Advanced and cool staging overall would have to be nixed out of hand because show planning could not space out and work around them. Not to mention the awful and soul-crushing experiences of having to sit through 40-50 minutes of non-stop songs fated for the right part of the scoreboard clustered together (yes, fated,… Read more »

My wishes for the next edition: • Victory of a country who never won before, or at least hasn’t won in decades. • Many different languages and musical genres, though I fear Loreen’s victory over Käärijä would encourage an opposite trend. • A significant revision to the voting system. Either giving the televote more power than the juries, or making thorough changes to the stucture of juries and how they vote (e.g. jurors from more diverse musical background, fewer Eurovision related jurors and each juror watches the shows alone rather than with the other jurors). • Return of the random… Read more »

In other news: during the past week, Tattoo got more streams (8M) than all of the other 36 2023 esc songs combined. My wish for ESC 2024 is for juries to get a say in the semifinals again, though generally if countries’ juries expand to 10 members each (whenever it’s financially possible of course) then I don’t think it’ll be as manipulable as it was before. In most cases the jury is a backup net to somewhat filter out the bad meme votes and troll acts.

I just hope the contest won’t devolve back to the 2008 era where each act gets more outrageous than the last just to grab votes, because it can be much too rewarding

Removing juries from the contest would the the biggest mistake that could potentially be made. Some of you might’ve forgotten the televoting-only days at the ESC and the effect it had on the overall quality of songs.

I’d keep 50/50 proportion, but increase the number of professional jurors to at least 10, preferably even more.

I’d also ban the pre-recorded vocals and producers-decided runnig order.

Honestly I don’t believe jury can really bw reformed so that they start appreciating artsy songs or songs in other genre. In my head having more jury members will just result in more people ranking radiofriendly pop songs first and more people ranking songs in alt genres low even if executed well. I think they should just keep jury, but reduce their influence.

In my opinion selecting something like 15 or 20 industry professionals from diverse musical backgroungs (and not only those affiliated with the national broadcasters) might make an actual difference. There’s plenty of time to tally up all the votes right before both semis and the final.

At least that would make the jury vote more valid than it is right now.

Totally agree (as you’ll see in my post). It’s like these 2 people have decided the winner already!
Gone are the days when we’re all surprised or excited during the voting. Since they decided the running order, it’s almost mathematically possible to tell who’s going to win, and that’s just wrong (and extremely boring).
I was lucky enough to be at the grand final this year and the voting was so boring and there was such an anti- climatic atmosphere in the arena when Loreen won.
