While a lot of nations are choosing their Eurovision 2024 act with the help of an international jury, Germany will go a different way. In 2024 they’ll get help from abroad…but in the form of Austria’s Eurovision queen Conchita Wurst and Irish-born singer Rea Garvey. They will help Germany out by finding one of its national selection acts.

The show “Ich will zum ESC!”, which means “I wanna go to Eurovision!”, will select one act who gets a place in the German national final next year. The brand new production will be a mixture of a documentary and a competition. There will be 15 acts in total vying to get the ticket for Germany’s Eurovision selection show.

In total, there will be six episodes of Ich will zum ESC! starting on 27 January on ARD mediathek, which is like a streaming platform for German-speakers. The program will also broadcast on television on NDR. In the final episode, the German audience will decide the winner by televote, and that they’ll get the ticket to the main show Das deutsche Finale 2024 on 16 February. There, the country will decide who will actually sing for Germany at Eurovision.

Broadcaster NDR surprised fans today by announcing this new format with beloved musicians Conchita and Rea who are both extremely popular in Germany. Rea is one of the most played artists on national radio and was a judge on The Voice of Germany. Conchita, of course, won Eurovision back in 2014 and regularly takes part in German TV shows and events, and was even was a judge alongside supermodel Heidi Klum in a TV drag competition that may have been inspired by a certain show called RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The 15 acts for “Ich will zum ESC!”

One of those 15 artists will get the ticket to the German final in February. Some of them already made their interest in next years’ edition public before:

Luca Wefes

Luca is an experienced singer who was “born to entertain”. He took part in the casting show The Voice Of Germany and is a trained actor. Right now, Luca is part of the musical The beauty and the beast and is doing performances all over Germany.

Marie

With her own impro-show iam.justmyself on social media, Marie already has a huge following and loves to entertain people with her acting. But of course also singing is a passion for Marie. She likes to sing in German and English and lives in Munich. Here you can watch an instagram reel by Marie, where she’s making fun of people who always send loooong memos:

Also taking part are singer Béranger, who’s got French roots and already made his application public via TikTok, Celina, who has no stage experience at all so far and Florian, who’s got a masters degree in media management already. But also Sophie, who speaks about trans-rights in her own podcast and 57-years old Esther Filly are part of the show.

Apollson

Apollson, whose real name is Bruno, has already released some music and sings mainly in German. He hails from Bavarian city Regensburg and loves to not only makes an impression with his music but also by the topics he sings about. Apollson often talks about depression and other difficulties in life within his music.

Paul (POULISH KID)

Paul is part of the project POULISH KID, where he releases music together with his two best friends. They also have a very own identification mark: all of them are wearing knitted masks while singing. For the Eurovision-selection show he shows his face though but he wants to impress the judges with an original song by POULISH KID.

Five other artists, wishing to compete in the German final for Eurovision 2024 are: Sven, who wants to impress the judges by singing a Måneskin-song, Lyn, who doesn’t only sing but also writes her own music and is a video artist and Eurovision-superfan Anne from Hamburg. Also taking part are singer OJI CHRISTOS who also made his Eurovision plans public on TikTok already and 19-year old Jamina from Hamburg.

Bibiane

This young singer from Berlin is already known by German fans since she made her application public on TikTok, like many others. Bibane already released electronic-pop songs together with producer Mausio. She works as a Social Media manager and wants to be a full-time singer soon.

Who would you like to see at the German national final 2024? What do you think of the new concept with Conchita and Rea Garvey? Let us know in the comments below.

Still have no idea how one of the biggest economies and biggest music industries still doesn’t have any clue how to go about their selection process. Every year, it’s another half-baked, ill-conceived scheme that they’ll inevitably do completely away with in 2025.

I don’t think they wouldn’t know how to do it since they’ve been doing it for so long. We can only look at Finland (non-automatic qualifier) or France and Spain (automatic qualifiers like Germany), all countries that have changed course, and see what *choice to do better* means.

Nothing to do with the size of the economy – it’s about priorities and perception. Remember a long winded national final doesn’t guarantee success – Malta, San Marino eg. It’s down to the broadcaster to decide how to find their entry not the exchequer of the government. And when Germany send a good song they do just fine : a win 13 years ago and a good result for Michael : better than a lot of countries! (UK!!).

At first glance I thought it said ” Conchita to represent Germany ”
That probably would have been a better choice for Germany. At least they would not end up last

I hate these experiments Germany does. It never works, why even bother? Just do a proper national final like every other country.

Ok why not but whatever Germany will do now it will be criticized so really why not they have nothing to loose. Now it’s not because you have won Eurovision or did well that you forcefully know what is better for the contest or what could please more to the general audience. The esc trophy or a top 5 result doesn’t bring you the absolute good taste in music, it doesn’t make you an “Eurovision expert” neither a music expert. So in one hand I find funny to see always the same esc figures being used to help countries in… Read more »

I hate it. A reality show where the winner is decided based on personality and backstory. Pass.

“Coaching” “Bootcamps”

The goal should be to find somebody who doesn’t need either of these things to begin with.

A bunch of terrible English language songs incoming, and one joke German song.

Well this was unexpected…and very odd. The mug shots of the pair are very funny. Feels like Conchita shouldn’t be there because they’re Austrian, but I guess that’s close enough. Most of these performers for this single act seem very unprofessional, so they will have to teach them how to master the stage first before even getting a decent song for Eurovision. Odd way to choose someone even for one act. I’m glad this isn’t the way they’re doing everything this year but can appreciate Germany spicing it up a bit.

Rea Garvey has plenty of The Voice of Germany coaching experience, i trust him to give these wildcard hopefuls songs what fit with their own musicality

at least Germany is upping its game with a wildcard show before the main NF, also no longer titled unser lied but Das Deutsche Finale, which also sounds much better for me

Gott sei Dank!!! If it weren’t for Conchita, probably Germany could have lost all hope of not ending bottom two. Schnell schnell!!!
