Roll the dice and melt the ice — if you’re into betting, odds are that Iceland’s Daði Freyr Pétursson will give you something to shout about. In a new interview with Icelandic broadcaster RUV, the “Think About Things” hitmaker says that he and his band Gagnamagnið are setting high expectations for themselves with their Eurovision 2021 song.
“I’m going to try and win,” he tells the broadcaster from the Icelandic countryside, where he’s finishing up the entry. “I do not want to promise anything, but we are going into this as if it’s a competition.”
As we previously reported, Daði put out an open call for fans to record vocals that will be used to create an a capella choir as part of his song. On Twitter he linked to a Google Drive folder with seven audio files demonstrating the different vocal parts needed. The parts come together to create an 18-second piece based around the line “Finds a new way to grow.”
Some of the parts just include tuneful “ooohs” while other parts include the lyric. The parts cover a variety of vocal ranges, meaning you don’t need to be able to sing as low as Daði to be part of the choir.
Daði tells RUV he received some 250 recordings from the public in just two days.
The entry is already written and he plans to release it in March.
“I would say it’s a logical next step from ‘Think About Things’. It’s upbeat and there will be a bit of dance to it. It’s an upbeat pop song.”
So why has he set up shop in a rural county called (and note that this is the correct spelling): Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur?
“It’s very cozy,” he says. “It’s nice to have this window right in front of me, and when I’m tired of looking at the screen, I just need to look up and I have a pretty nice view.”

It’s definitely time for Iceland to win. They’re the only nordic country that hasn’t won yet.
Dadi and his band are very talented, have great sense of humor and I have a gut feeling it will be a great song. 🙂

This won’t be a problem for someone like Dadi, because his song (and also his music video) will probably stand out anyway. But with everyone waiting for March, I fear that some songs will end up buried by the competition. It would be refreshing if some country that really believes in their entry releases it already in January.

Only Teardrops was among the first songs to be selected in 2013 and it still won by a big margin. I would wish if someone would release their song now. A good song doesn’t get old, it only thrives with time. Only boring songs get worn off if released super early.
