In recent years, the Melodi Grand Prix songs have been released in a staggered fashion: Songs dropped a few days before the semi-final they would compete in. Not this year. For MGP 2022 all 21 songs and artists will be revealed on the same day — 10 January.
The news comes direct from Melodi Grand Prix Boss Stig Karlsen, who was speaking to NRK in Oslo. Karlsen, who has been working tirelessly for months to bring the show to life, isn’t concerned that the simultaneous release of songs will disadvantage anyone or give anyone else the upper hand.
“One may think that it is an advantage to perform the song early in the competition, just as much as it can be an advantage to be on the screen close to the final,” he says. “I do not think we should underestimate the Norwegian people. The best song and performance will win anyway.”
Ultimately, he sees the 21-song release as an “opportunity to get to know all the songs,” which is good for all the artists.
Norway: All 21 Melodi Grand Prix 2022 songs will be released on the same day
Those 21 songs span a variety of genres, including rock, pop, country, opera, Latin, EDM and heavy metal. And they’ll be performed by what Stig describes as the strongest group of vocalists the competition has ever seen.
Good thing too. As he says: “It’s no help to have good songs if you don’t have artists who can deliver them.”
As previously reported, this year’s MGP will consist of four semi-finals, a second chance round and a grand final. The first semi-final kicks off on 15 January, while the final will take place on 19 February.
All the shows will be held at the H3 arena out at Fornebu. Producers plan to welcome a studio audience, which Stig says will give rise to a “feeling of electricity” between teams, artists and the audience.
Tickets went on sale Friday and are available at eventim.no.

NMGP was fantastic in 2021. Looking forward to another high quality show. (and even tho I liked Tix’s song, hopefully no fan flooding the votes this time)
I think a jury vote is going to be added to this year’s MGP in order offsend that kind of voting for the fame, not the song quality. Hopefully it will result in Norway sending a high quality song to Eurovision, not a potential semi final flop.
looks like it’ll be another great mgp, i hope all the songs will be released directly on streaming services as norway has been doing for a while (love them for that).
I can’t wait for the usual ones to post their Top 21’s for MGP on Youtube. It’ll be quite interesting to see if they all share a common favorite. Hehe
MGP might be my favourite natinal final ever. Everything is so high quality..
Especially last 2 years i like MGP more than Melodifestivalen
I need another synthwave bop like Hero
Last year Raylee with Hero was underrated. The staging was good too I think it was a fun song!
Hero definitely grew on me a lot over time!
How many songs are in each semi?
If five of the 21 songs are direct finalists, then the remaining 16 are divided into four songs per semi final. Then a second chance round, though I don’t know how many songs would go on to the final.
I think 10 songs will be in the finale! 5 automatic finalist, then 4 from each semi and 1 from second chance if i am not mistaken 🙂
That is probably the best way. I’d like to know all the songs in the running at once. They claim this is a very strong set for MGP 2022. Let’s hope the songs actually live up to the hype.
I like this more than to release the songs week by week
Best way to release all songs tbh, MGP already did this in 2012 (which is still one of their best selections to date) Norway is one of the best countries in Eurovision and I always look forward to Melodi Grand Prix every year, my own Top 2 is often the overall Top 2!
I may hate opera in general (sorry opera lovers!), but I look forward to the other genres. 🙂
At least one good Monday scheduled for 2022! When it was said the way MGP’s songs are released would change, I assumed they would do like Melfest, but I actually prefer this way. It gives some time for the songs of unknown acts to find an audience and now every entry will have the same window of exposure.
In my opinion this is a great idea! I hated having to wait for all the songs to be released just to be underwhelmed week by week haha. This is a good solution.
