“The vibe of native lands gives me power” — Wellboy connects to the ground beneath his feet in “Nozzy Bossy” lyrics

From the small town to the big city! Wellboy is one of the eight finalists of Vidbir, Ukraine’s selection for Eurovision 2022. With “Nozzy Bossy”, which phonetically means “barefoot” in Ukrainian, he sings about the importance of connecting with the land underneath your feet.

Wellboy “Nozzy Bossy” in Vidbir 2022

Wellboy — that’s Anton Vel’boy — grew up in the Sumy Oblast village of Hrun’. He rose to fame in 2019 while participating in the Ukrainian version of X Factor. With his nasal voice and interesting stage persona, he quickly gained a strong fanbase and following. Among them was Andriy Danylko – the man behind Eurovision 2007 drag queen Verka Serduchka – who often referred to Wellboy as his favourite act. 

He debuted on the Ukrainian music scene with the single “Viter” (“Wind”) in 2020. However, his big break didn’t come until last summer when he released “Husy” (“Geese”), which was one of the largest streaming and radio hits in the country during the second half of 2021. A follow-up single, “Vyshni” (“Cherries”), was met with the same amount of success. 

Wellboy rose to fame with a style that combines countryside kitsch with rap and alternative pop — in stark contrast to the typical Ukrainian pop star. His Vidbir 2022 entry “Nozzy Bossy” will therefore be a unique release in his catalogue, as it’s his first song with some English lyrics

What do the “Nozzy Bossy” lyrics mean?

In “Nozzy Bossy”, Wellboy tries to reconnect with the ground underneath his feet. In the first verse of the song, the narrator says that the protagonist, a girl, should not forget her roots in the countryside.

Her roots made her who she is and they’ll be able to bring her home as disaster will eventually pass. The girl is asked why she would like to sit inside all day when she can also go outside to feel the Earth on which she lives. Wellboy sings: “If you could without effort just earn a few thousand without going out of [your] home / Then neither me, nor you, family and distant relatives would ever bathe at all in [your] life, no-no-no”.

However, in the second Ukrainian verse, at the end of the song, it is revealed that the narrator is actually in love with the girl: “If we were on Hoverla, climbed on Bukovel, I would get up and scream from the top, na-na-na / If you were a model, I would climb into your home / I would go for tea with you on a dark night, no-no-no”. Therefore, Wellboy wants this girl to return to her native village so they can meet again on the same grounds they grew up on.

“‘Nozzy Bossy’ — about the strength of the village, about all the barefoot people who walk on this planet. I consider myself barefoot. I’m going somewhere, I don’t know where. But I go barefoot and I’m thrilled. And this song is about all such people, with whom you always have the strength of the village, the land that gives you energy. There are a lot of deep things in this song.”
