stefania eva jinek eurovision gala magazine

Last week, broadcaster ERT confirmed that the Greek-Dutch Junior Eurovision star Stefania Liberakakis will represent Greece at Eurovision 2020. Stefania’s song for Rotterdam is called “SUPERG!RL” and it will be released in the coming weeks.

In the days since, she’s featured in print and broadcast media in both Greece and The Netherlands. These include a cover shoot for Gala magazine and an interview on the popular Jinek talk show.

Greece’s Stefania on Jinek

At just 17, Stefania is the youngest person to ever represent Greece at Eurovision. Appearing on the popular Dutch talk show Jinek, she spoke about her participation.

Dutch broadcaster VPRO is following Stefania’s journey to Rotterdam for a documentary. Thanks to this visual material, we can see Stefania’s reaction (29:11) when her manager told her that she will represent Greece at Eurovision. While Stefania explains how much she wants to represent Greece, her manager appears behind her with a large cake with the Eurovision 2020 logo.

Her manager says “Honey, we did it”. Cue tears of happiness — “They picked me?! I’m not even famous in Greece!”.

The news has still to sink in. During a press event at Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena, Stefania remembers thinking: “Wow Stef, here you are, you did it!”. When host Eva Jinek asks Stefania if she finds it hard to be Greece’s youngest participant, Stefania replies: “Actually, I’m not thinking too much about that. I’m focusing on what I love to do – which is performing”.

In summer 2019, Stefania was asked to perform in Greece during the MAD Video Music Awards. The goal was to see if Stefania and the Greek audience had a connection. Backstage, she met Dimitris Kontopoulos – a famous composer of Eurovision songs such as “Shady Lady” (Ukraine 2008), “Hold Me” (Azerbaijan 2013) and “You Are The Only One” (Russia 2016).

Stefania describes herself as a girl who is usually very shy, but she knew she had to seize this opportunity. The JESC 2016 singer approached him, introduced herself and said that she would like to represent Greece at Eurovision. Stefania asked if they could record some demos together – and that’s exactly what they did.

During this meeting, Dimitris Kontopoulos presented “SUPERG!RL” – her Eurovision 2020 song.

Evidently, ERT was also very enthusiastic about Stefania and her song.

Greece’s Stefania on Gala magazine

Stefania is not famous in Greece. But that’s changing. After her first interviews on Greek television, she has had paparazzi chasing after her. The Greeks are starting to recognise her when she walks on the street – which Stefania calls a very funny experience.

She also did a photo shoot for Gala magazine, which you can see on the wiwibloggs Instagram account.

But it’s not all kisses and dancin’ for Stefania. Her final high school exams clash with Eurovision. Fortunately, her high school has decided that she only needs to do two exams, and she will do the remaining exams next year. This way she has more time to focus on Eurovision. Her school obviously wants Stefania to win!

What do you think of Greece’s? Are you excited to hear ”SUPERG!RL?” Let us know in the comments.

She looks lovely. My main worries: 1) Kontopoulos’s music is stuck in 2000-2010. I am afraid the song will be meh. 2) Even if stars align and Kontopoulos get it right with the track ( doubt it ), Stefania looks very shy and inexperienced. The song ( uptempo with ethnic elements ) sounds demanding on stage. She will have to work very much so she wont look wooden and scared. 3) The theme of the song sounds a bit silly, how many people will relate to teen girl problems and will vote for it? I am hoping for the best,… Read more »

From your reaction you look more than a competitor of the songwriter than a fan of the country

The songwriter’s work is crap and youre about to think the same in a few days. I just remember the 3 songs he wrote for Demy. See you then

She seems really nice and down-to-Earth. Greece isn’t always known for that, so here’s hoping that comes through.

IN REGARDS TO THEIR SONGS AND STAGING CHOICES. I have nothing against Greece or its people. Plenty of chill folks over there.

I hate that Greeks tone it down the last years. They were always the party souls of Eurovision

To me, Greece can be both. I think a party-ish kind of entry like Alcohol is Free suits them well, and they can smash a good ballad back in the ‘90s. I just want them to do something authentically Greek or less intense than a Hold Me or You Are the Only One.
