Talk about giving Sanremo fans the shivers! On Tuesday Mahmood & Blanco topped the press vote on the first night of the Italian music festival with their powerful duet “Brividi”.  And now the “chills” of the title have spread beyond Italy, as the song has hit #5 on the Spotify Global Top 50 chart.

The chart lists the most-played songs on the platform globally in absolute terms. This makes it different to the Viral chart, which tracks trending songs.

Mahmood & Blanco reach #5 on Spotify Global Top 50 chart

The Italian duo have passed global superstars on their way to the Top 5. Adele’s “Easy on Me” sits at #8, while Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers” is at #10. In this battle of shivers, Italy has come out on top.

Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” is currently at #1, followed by Gayle’s “abcdefu” and The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber’s “Stay”.

The duo’s performance at Sanremo earned plaudits from fans who applauded their chemistry, vocals and emotion. Much is open to interpretation, but many of our followers commented on the power of seeing two men pour their hearts out together through music.

The lyrics emphasize the insecurities and mistakes of those who don’t always know how to love. “Naked with shivers, sometimes I don’t know how to express myself,” they sing in this contemporary track that caresses tradition.

The two singers explain: “‘Brividi’ has an important message, that of freedom, which is a universal theme. The desire to express all the love possible, even when there’s the fear of making mistakes and feeling inadequate, unable to convey what you feel.”

Both artists are used to topping charts at home and abroad.

Mahmood returns to Sanremo three years after winning with “Soldi“, which went on to place second at Eurovision 2019. It was also a staple of the Spotify Global chart.

Blanco was a major revelation in Italy last year. At only 18 years of age, he produced 25 platinum records with only one album release — the chart-topping project “Blu celeste“.

Italy’s Top 50 chart on Spotify

Italy’s Top 50 chart may indicate how songs will fair in the public vote.

At the moment the chart is awash in Sanremo songs. Here are the Top 10:

  1. Brividi — Mahmood & Blanco
  2. INSUPERABILE — Rkomi
  3. Ciao Ciao — La rappresentante di lista
  4. Dove Si Balla — Dargen D’Amico
  5. DOMENICA — Achille Lauro
  6. Ti amo non lo so dire — Noemi
  7. Inverno dei fiori — Michele Bravi
  8. Duecentomila ore — Ana Mena
  9. Apri tutte le porte — Gianni Morandi
  10. Miele — Giusy Ferreri

Soldi was miles better for me, still don’t get that hype about this song and live performance was not so good either

5th on global spotify is massive. The only ESC song which managed to do that last year was zitti e buoni. Or did it even???

Totally gorgeous song, just listened to the live version. My problem was that with high notes it sounded tough and out of tune in some places from both singers…

I prefer it over Soldi, but still I don’t get the hype.. What am I missing here?

Trending in uk youtube as well. This song is MASSIVE and well deserved. Haven’t had a feeling like this when listening to. song since Irama last year. Beautiful.

I really don’t get the hype over Brividi, which sounds just like a standard Italian ballad that you hear at Sanremo every single year. It’s nowhere near as good as Soldi and it certainly won’t give Italy another Eurovision victory (although this might come back to bite me if it gets chosen to go to Eurovision given Italy’s track record). I can’t help but think that much of the hype is purely down to the song being sung by a big name (Mahmood).

it’s not just about the song but also the presentation, which matters a lot at esc. everyone in italy has been talking about it nonstop. and it debuted at #1 on spotify switzerland + got 200k+ streams from abroad so the international hype is clearly there.

I think certainly across Europe it’s more about the name rather than the song. Of course most Europeans won’t have seen the Sanremo performance, they just saw Mahmood appearing in Spotify and thought to give it a spin.

Attention guys, being first in the charts doesn’t mean victory at Sanremo:

  • In 2019, Ultimo was first in the charts, he got 50% of the televote in the final top 3 and Mahmood only 20 but the press placed him first and then he won.
  • In 2020 Viceversa was first in the charts, Gabbani won the televote but the press wanted Diodato so he won.

The question that has to be asked is the margin betweeen Mahmood/blanco and Elisa in the press ranking.

ultimo’s song peaked at #2 in the italian singles chart behind mahmood so tell another one. receipts: https://www.fimi.it/top-of-the-music/classifiche.kl#/charts/3/2019/7

I don’t know much about the charts and Sanremo but Ultimo’s ”I Tuoi Particulari” mesmerized me at first listen and it’s absolutely unforgettably beautiful

They will reach the top 3 since it’s decided by televote only (on saturday), we don’t know the demoscopic vote yet but they may win the televote and they are 2nd in the press’ provisional ranking. I think they will win the demoscopic vote as well.

Actually, these results completely contradict what you are saying, “Brividi” is clearly the best choice that Italy can make for Eurovision at this point.

Wow. Their performance is the first I checked and it left a big impact. But today, I was listening to the studio versions of Elisa and Irama and what can I say… They are my first picks now.

The song is by far the best of this year’s Sanremo. I hope they win. I also I don’t get the hype around Elisa, Emma’s song was way better in Day 2 of SR.

will be interesting if they win San Remo, as Mahmood has a tour foreseen exactly around the dates of the Eurovision week, so it’s highly unlikely he would accept to move this to compete

I do not know if it would be a clever move of him to renounce to partecipate for Italy the year Italy is the host country for a couple of tour dates. Especially because being Italy the host country, he doesnt need to be 24/7 in Turin, just for the rehearsals. Im not sure that Italians would take it well, at all.

That doesn’t seem feasible to me. You can’t have tour dates during rehearsal week, even more so if Covid is still around by then (which it probably will be). You have to stay in the bubble.

The mother of a certain eco-conscious Swede did it in 2009 in Moscow, flying back and forth to give concerts during Eurovision time.

It seems you blame her daughter for this 🙂 But there was no Covid bubble back then.

I’m curious to see how well Elisa will do on spotify tomorrow. Both brividi and forse sei tu are stunning quality ballads of a level that can break the host country curse. I see top 5 for Italy again this year.

I’m pretty sure she won’t do nearly as well, if the streams on Youtube are any indication.

Polegend Godgarina

yeah, she does well in streaming but her song doesn’t have nearly the same commercial appeal as brividi. i’ll be surprised if anyone from the 2nd night manages to do even one third of what brividi did. but when it comes to televoting, i expect mahmood+blanco and elisa to be a close top 2, with a landslide from the rest. it’ll all come down to the demoscopic jury.

they got 3,384,192 streams from italy, they broke the previous daily record over 2x. outside of italy they got 202k streams. they’re also #1 on spotify switzerland with 39,799 streams which is the best debut ever for an italian song. this is MASSIVE y’all…
