The semi-finals of Eesti Laul 2023 are now over. Five acts have progressed from semi-final 2 to secure the next qualification spots for the grand final.

Held in Viimsi Artrium, the show was hosted by Tõnis Niinemets and Grete Kuld.

Eesti Laul 2023 semi-final 2

Results

Voting was done over two rounds. The first four qualifiers were determined by a 50:50 split of jury and public voting. They were:

  • INGER – “Awaiting You”
  • Meelik – “Tuju”
  • SISSI – “Lighthouse”
  • ALIKA – “Bridges”

An additional qualifier was then chosen by a second round of purely public voting. This was:

  • m els – “So Good At What You Do”

They’ll now join the five qualifiers from semi-final one in the grand final on 11 February.

But it’s not over for those who have failed to make it so far. Another round of voting is now open for the public to choose the last finalists amongst the ten non-qualifiers. The results of this will revealed at a later date.

Running order

  1. INGER – “Awaiting You”
  2. Linalakk & Bonzo – “Aeg”
  3. Meelik – “Tuju”
  4. Elysa – “Bad Philosophy”
  5. Robin Juhkental – “Kurbuse matused”
  6. m els – “So Good At What You Do”
  7. Wiiralt – “Salalik”
  8. SISSI – “Lighthouse”
  9. Carlos Ukareda – “Whiskey Won’t Forget”
  10. ALIKA – “Bridges”

Alika, Sissi, Meelik and M els all have really nice songs and gave good performances. I think the final will be between Alika and Ollie with Alika having an advantage as of now for the win. For me personally, Ollie has the song closest to my taste and as a result he is my winner. Alika and Sissi would also be good choices though. All in all, I think Estonia will once again be pretty high in my personal ESC top.

Actually quite shocked that Eesti Laul seems to have gotten almost every qualifier correct so far. There’s nothing that’s missed out that really deserves to be there.
I definitely don’t think the wildcards are necessary. There’s not an act that would add anything to what is already a stacked final.

Sissi definitely needs to be in the superfinal. This is her most competitive song yet, and her performance was majestic. If she got 2nd place with Time in 2021, I could even see her winning.

So I heard there’s going to be a wild card round where We will get two more qualifiers from the 10 that didn’t make it in the semi finals. I think elysa will definitely be one of the wild cards, but I don’t know who will join her. What would you like to see?

So pleased for Meelik. I mean I would be quite happy if they won the whole thing. It just feels so different from anything else we’ve seen so far this year. Everything is just so on point, the song, the visual, the aesthetic. I find it all very nice.

Meelik is what would happen if social awkwardness was personified in the form of a rock band.

Which is what I love about them. I was pleasantly surprised at their qualification!

Glad that the Meelik ensemble made it to the final at least, too bad Robin didn’t, the song was just too niche for the Eesti normies but it’s still easily one of the highlights of this season so I really appreciate his return.

Estonia has 4 songs that would likely be in my top 10, so I’m really keeping my fingers crossed one of them wins. One even has the potential to be my overall winner. So, good luck, and pick well, Estonia.
I don’t dislike any of the finalists now, but there are still songs I massively prefer to others.

Also, I’ll answer you about that question about Nevera now. 🙂

I’m into 7 of the 10 qualifiers (too early to tell how would they end on my personal ranking when Eurovision comes though) and I think the other 3 are just OK. The chance they pick something I like is quite high then. I’m currently rooting for one of the rock entries to win.

I am happy for Alika and Sissi! I am also very happy that Tuju made it. Surprised that Elysa didn’t, as she had a better song that last year. Now, Estonia, you have a really good final set of songs, but please choose well. At 10 of these are at least okay, but what you need is GREAT! Good luck, Estonia!

The staging wasn’t problem. It was something about her. Well I hated her outfit and hairstyle but that wasn’t my problem. Something about her emotion in relation to the song was off for me I think.

Alika and Sissi have brought drama tonight, soooo much drama, maybe a bit too much for my taste, nonetheless impressive vocals that the juries could totally eat in Eurovision but the songs even if beautiful are not my cup of tea, they make me nothing, I’ve still Ollie in my head and nobody managed to make me forget him tonight so for me he should go in Eurovision but I need less camera shots and more eyes contacts with the camera from him.

M els: Bit disappointed with this performance, love the studio version but something didnt work for me live, I thought it would lean into the lounge feel but it went in a different direction. It didnt wow me as much as I hoped it would. Carlos: I like this song quite a bit, the performance is grand. I think it would’ve been more effective if he walked around the stage like the MV but I didnt mind the performance. Sissi: I like the song, I dont think this song necessarily needs interpretive dancing. It sounded decent thought and I prefer… Read more »

Alika is a very enthusiastic performer. This might well be a Wouter Hardy song, but whereas “Arcade” was a really current pop track, “Bridges” ventures far deeper into the musical theatre realm. Purple Mask undoubtedly has all the enzymes to digest it, but I’m not so sure about myself. This will certainly qualify, though.

I was thinking the same, it feels like a musical theater song. It wouldn’t be my pick, I think Estonia has better options, but I wouldn’t have a big problem with it if she ends up winning.

I think thats the reason I wasn’t fully gone on it. I loved Arcade but like you’ve said, Bridges is a lot more musical theater which isn’t always my cup of tea. It was a very good performance though.

It was a good performance, yet a tad over the top for my taste. But that, of course, works well with the musical theatre feel, so it was not a bad fit, just nothing I would ever listen to.

Wow Alika did a really good job, preferred her vocal here to the studio version. Still don’t really understand why it’s such a strong favourite in the odds, but was one of the best performances so far. I do think it would get a bit lost at eurovision though.

Alika’s voice is powerful. But you’re right, this song would be lost among the others at Eurovision. I think this song gets the hype because of the fact that the writer of this song is the same writer who wrote Arcade. I personally like Ollie

Alika and Sissi sang for their LIVES! I’m impressed! They sound like Eurovision participants, a cut above the rest. Prior to this live semi final, their songs weren’t my favourite, but their PERFORMANCES are enough to actually beat Ollie in the final!

I feel sorry for everyone before them and Carlos – three great vocalists in the final to make you forget about the others, plus m els was really good, so the second half is more memorable and Inger and Elysa get forgotten!

m els: vocally some issues, performance lacked something. im not so confident that it’ll make it, even though it deserves it.
Wiiralt: not bad performance, song goes nowhere.
Sissi: great voice, expected performance, bad camera work. pretty much sums up eesti laul!
Carlos: vocally shaky, nothing special about the performance. it’ll still qualify tho.
Alika: a good performance, i expected something more.

“Whiskey Won’t Forget” sounds almost sped up? It’s a sad song that refuses to linger on any of the immagery. Like, it doesn’t need to slow down a lot but a 1.5 or 1.25 speed would really help it out.

Country rock is not really my style and “Salalik” is very repetitive. But it was done well for what it was.
Still more buffering issues, when Sissi was on. I just don’t like “Lighthouse” as a song, but she will probably go straight to the superfinal, anyway, although her singing was uncharacteristically uneven from what I heard.

m els was actually really enjoyable. I bit like sun numero last year on UMK, was well under my radar pre show and ended up being one of my favourite songs of the year. It’s one of those very unimposing but increasingly catchy songs.
