La Zarra will sing “Évidemment” for France at Eurovision 2023.

Moving away from the usual C’est vous qui decidez national final, France hopes La Zarra’s enigmatic charm will turn heads in Liverpool.

France in Eurovision 2023 : La Zarra with “Évidemment”

La Zarra — born Fatima Zahra Hafdi — is a 25-year-old French-Canadian singer. Born in Montreal to a family of Moroccan origin, La Zarra has a deep love for Eurovision. As a youngster, she often sang Marie Myriam’s winning song “L’oiseau et l’enfent” together with her mother.

Entirely self-taught, she quickly began to write her own compositions inspired by her experiences, confessions and other sharp emotions. Her warm and distinguished voice allows her to communicate to the public her desires, her hopes but also her disillusions with singular verisimilitude.

The young woman has achieved massive success there last year with her song “Tu t’en iras”, which has accumulated more than 19 million views on YouTube.

La Zarra describes “Évidemment” as a “universal love song” and a “hymn that can be sung by all”. Her song takes the listener on a journey as La Zarra discovers her resilience blooming from the ashes of a turbulent relationship. In the midst of adversity, the young woman seems to find who she really is and changes for the better.

La Zarra suggests her ex-lover fed her false and unmeaningful compliments, with lyrics such as “all of these beautiful promises that I hear, they’re nothing but wind” and “I look for love, I find none”. But in spite of the toxic relationship, La Zarra grows to become a stronger person, saying goodbye to the young naive person she used to be — “she will never be the same again, the girl from before”.

“Évidemment” lyrics — La Zarra (France Eurovision 2023)

Original text (French)

Mon cœur, mes mains,
Mes yeux, mes reins,

English translation

My heart, my hands
My eyes, my kidneys
Don’t belong to me anymore
I hurt myself to do some good
I forget like it’s nothing

In my infernal garden, flowers grow
That I water with my dreams, with my cries
Even if we were on top of the world
We couldn’t touch the sky with a finger

Evidently
All of these beautiful promises that I hear
They’re nothing but wind

Evidently
That before the sun comes the rain
That’s what we forget

It is always too good to be true
But it is never too ugly to be false

Evidently
She will never be the same again
This girl from before

I sell tomorrow, I buy yesterday
Time is a killer
I look for love
I find none
Like in my purse

In my head it’s not that clear
I look for truth while avoiding it
Even if we were on top of the world
We couldn’t touch the sky with a finger

Evidently
All of these beautiful promises that I hear
They’re nothing but wind

Evidently
She will never be the same again
This girl from before

Because I sing
My life, yours
And a bit of romance
I am naked in front of you
Therefore, give me a chance
From you to me
From me to you
Have I managed to sing
To sing the great France

It is always too good to be true but
It is never too ugly to be false

Evidently
She will never be the same again
This girl from before

Evidently

Wow! The entry from France this year is amazing! French is an amazing language, I wish more countries sang in their native language at Eurovision… Hopefully, this will at least come in the top 5.

I think there’s an error in the translation. When La Zarra mentions her “reins,” I don’t think she’s referring to the organ, but rather the part of the back with the sensual French expression “chute de reins.” Perhaps we could translate it as “hips” or “lower back”?

Lovely song. It’s very chic and polished. And it has staging potential! La Zarra is really iconic! Hope France will get a top 10 position!

Perhaps a better translation into English would be a good idea? Évidemment = obviously. Because after the good weather comes the rain, etc… But apart from this sloppiness, I think we have a winner!

this song is a grower. I didn’t like it at first either, but La Zarra’s vocals and charm are mesmerizing, the camera will love her for sure, so there shouldn’t be any live performance difficulties. or at least let’s hope so.

Me too, first listen I was a bit put off by the tempo, because of the pauses now and then, and her nail gestures were a bit too much…But the next day I woke up with the freaking chorus in my head!

I loved the song overall, sounds classical French but with a modern edge, and the lyrics are pretty poetic!
I’m sure this will land a spot on the top 10 in May

Thank you for the support man! It seems France won’t have the wiwi community support this year so it’s always enjoyable and reassuring to read 😉

It’ll land a spot on the Top 10, that’s for sure. Only Finland, Armenia, Poland, the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands are left among my hopes to elevate this year.

There are people who absolutely love it and fortunately and others not so much and it’s normal, for those who dislike it, which I respect deeply and I totally understand, you have absolutely the right but I don’t like when people say I don’t like it so it won’t do well or it can’t win or whatever because firstly you’re not the absolute reference, nobody is, and secondly do you like all the esc winning songs each years or each of the top 5 or top 10 songs, I doubt of it.

Lyrically it’s quite meh, musically I find it really nice. I enjoy listening to this song but it’s not phenomenal by any means.

I do appreciate her singing as well as her singing style. The way she delivers this song is amazing and the instrumental is catchy as hell!

But maybe you don’t get the lyrics but as a french and how it sounds in french is far from being meh, it’s pretty deep and poetic.

A song doesn’t need to be phenomenal to do well but it needs more to be effective and to work. Soldi, Slomo are good example among others. This song is effective too imo. Our eurofans brains are conditioned with a lot of expectations, with a lots of esc cliches, with a lot of pictures in our mind, that the general public hasn’t, because at the first listen I thought like you, it lacked something, I wasn’t sure but now 2 days after I’m used of it and I’m totally on board, as I said let’s see how it will turn… Read more »

This is such an addictive track and I’m fond of La Zarra’s style. She’s elegant and somehow (I read that in a comment and instantly agreed) seems like a combination between Edith Piaf and Kylie Minogue.

Would “loins” be a better translation in English for “reins”? It seems more right to me, unless she is talking about her actual kidneys.
