Nu kör vi! Tonight we kicked off Sweden’s Melodifestivalen 2024 in Malmö Arena with heat 1, a good prequel to Eurovision in the same arena in May.

Tonight’s voting, like in Ukraine, was marred with technical difficulties. The Mello app had problems earlier on the night, but managed to work properly enough to continue on with the show.

Last year’s third placed act Smash Into Pieces took the victory with their entry “Heroes Are Calling” and qualified directly to the grand final, just as they did together with Loreen from Malmö in 2023. In the vote for the five other acts it was Lisa Ajax and “Awful Liar” that booked the second direct qualifying spot for Stockholm.

Elisa Lindström and Adam Woods will have to wait to have their fate decided in the Final Qualification on 2 March, while Samir & Viktor and Melina Borglowe are out of this years’ competition.

Result of Melodifestivalen heat 1

  1. Smash Into Pieces – “Heroes Are Calling” – Winner (DIRECT TO FINAL)
  2. Lisa Ajax – “Awful Liar” – 86 points (DIRECT TO FINAL)
  3. Elisa Lindström – “Forever Yours” – 69 points (QUALIFIED TO FINALKVALET)
  4. Adam Woods – “Supernatural” – 66 points (QUALIFIED TO FINALKVALET)
  5. Samir & Viktor – “Hela världen väntar” – 57 points (out)
  6. Melina Borglowe – “Min melodi” – 26 points (out)

Format of Melodifestivalen 2024

There are five heats plus a Final Qualification in this year’s Melfest, and each heat has six acts competing. The act with the most votes from the public wins the heat and gets the ticket to the grand final, and then a new round of voting begins to determine the places from 2 to 6.

The votes will be presented in age groups with 12, 10, 8, 5 and 3 points to the acts, where the highest placed act (number 2) goes through to the grand final, number 3 and 4 will go to Final Qualification and number 5 and 6 are done in the competition.

Were you happy with tonight’s results? Can the qualifiers get the victory in the grand final? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Som vanligt kommer det hat från fancommunityn mot precis allt som rör Melodifestivalen, som sagt, avundsjuka på framgång är ett gift

I’d like to know why Smash into Pieces have a tour of the USA booked for May? According to their website they even have a gig the night before Melfest finalen.

Because they have audience there?

Because bands tour, that’s pretty normal. It’s not like they could just sit at home and wait and don’t have any plans, just in case they happen to win Melodifestivalen. If they do, well, then they have to disappoint some of their American fans cancel some of their gig on the US tour, and go to those places some other time.

Felt sorry for Samir & Viktor. There song was simply a beautiful expression of love between two friends. The lyrics are stunning and the performance was great. And the two of them were just radiating love for each other and for everybody else.

Well it wasn’t exactly the best start to melfest. The right songs went thru in my opinion. Adam woods actually I thought was good but I preferred his previous entry. Elisas entry was really dated I mean if that entered over a decade ago it woulda went thru. Samir and victor… No…. Just no. That didn’t sound right. I don’t think they are good singers. Previous songs from them were slightly better. I actually liked Melina which was odd. She finished where I thought tho. And yea highlight of the night was the A*Teens. I still listen to their music… Read more »

one semi down and nothing yet that has the internet talking … even this comments section is tumbleweeds … are we going to have to wait to semi 4 like last year? also 6 songs semi feels a bit small to me…why do I have a feeling Elisa would’ve qualified if she was in Semi 2

Ahh, so this could be the year that Smash Into Pieces represents Sweden. “Heroes Are Calling” is a rock anthem, for sure. Lisa Ajax – Still has an amazing voice after all these years. Good to see her again. I like “Awful Liar” as a song as well. Adam Woods – Hmm. He’s good, but the song is a bit predictable for me. Also, the whole “you make me feel supernatural” lyric has been done a lot in national finals. Elisa – I enjoyed this song. The melody runs up the scales on the piano there. 🙂 Also, great energy… Read more »

A heavily pregnant woman singing about being an awful liar is kinda weird

Is she really heavily pregnant? Could be a cushion stuffed up there.

Could that be the “awful lie”?

Also, when is she due? Before or after May? I suspect there might be a substitute singer needed.

Or get those towels ready!

She said she would be in the 8th month of her pregnancy at eurovision, if she wins. And she said she would handle it

I felt that Lisa Ajax struggled with parts of Awful Liar it felt like she was straining. I really like this song, and am glad it qualified but feel it may have been in safer hands with a different vocalist.

What a crappy excuse is that ? 😀 don’t participate if you are pregnant. It aint someone forced her to participate. Or get a song you can actually handle.

They didn’t exactly produce Loreen. She was asked to participate, unlike others. So she was already known and the past Winner. Melodyfestivalen itself has been not so high-quality these last years

Or Loreen produced Loreen? Melfest was just at formality for her… and a waste of time.

Tattoo could’ve also been internally selected tbh

Sweden this year are going to finish bottom 5, has beens Smash into Pieces and Lisa Ajax winning a semi says more than enough about the lack of quality

Right songs went through. Smash Into Pieces had a bit weak vocals but overall an enjoyable song. Lisa Ajax was great, her chorus is still ringing in my head.

Awful Liar is my favorite from this heat, it’s solid and catchy, but this heat overall was surprisingly weak for Melfest’s standards

Melfest has had low standards for almost a decade now. Recent years were totally horrible.

Well, a decade is an exaggeration. Melfest 2016 was one of the best imo with my all-time favorites Oscar and Wiktoria, Lisa was great that year as well

A weak heat. Hopefully we haven’t heard the winner cuz if we have…….yikes. The app didn’t work for some people, myself included, but they didn’t mention it in the show. They got 100 000 less voters than last year, and almost only half of the usual money for charity. For being a seasoned host Carina Berg was just awful, plain bad. I can’t begin to describe how dissapointed I am in melfest heat one. Not looking forward to next week if this is the production they are serving, and actully scared for what this might tell for eurovision in may.… Read more »

Was it a weak heat? Yes. But all songs were solid. No one was really bad. Did I still enjoy the show? Yes. Did I still vote? Yes. Am I happy it is back? Yes. Do I look forward to it next week even though the songs migh be weak? Yes.
Happy for Lisa Ajax to get through final, nice comeback after not qualifying last time.

so basically this Ateens performance was the highlight of this semi and made me think how amazing it would’ve been to see Ateens return with an Alcazar-esque entry at Melfest…Malmo is exploding with this performance even shocking the group themselves.

shocking only post-teens career only Marie and Sara ever entered Melfest as contestants and Dhani and Amit never showed up

The app didn’t work during the first three songs or so. It was impossible to even log in on the app, so that’s why.

The app worked fine for me from the get-go. And there were “sparkles” on the heart for the first song, so I’d assume it worked for more people.

Didn’t work for me or any of the people I was talking to/texting. So there was definitely an app-crash, even if you could use it. The app logged me out when it started and I was unable to log in again until song 3 or 4, which is what happened to others too :/
