Although Vidbir 2024 is over after three days of recording, the drama isn’t. This year, and for the first time in Vidbir history, a contestant has placed question marks on the authenticity of the results. That is of course, if we don’t count Kalush Orchestra’s hunt for the 2022 split results.

Mélovin questions Vidbir 2024 results

“Dreamer” singer Mélovin, who finished third in the final result, has shared his doubts with the outcome of the Ukrainian national final. He did that in a live broadcast and television interview on the information news marathon Edyny Novyny, which is broadcast on several channels throughout the country.

When asked what his thoughts were when the Diia app broke, Mélovin said:

“At first, we couldn’t understand that it was really happening. But as tonight’s evening showed that Diia crashed, but that there was such a difference in the voting between the first and the second place… The difference was over 600, if I’m not wrong, 600,000 votes. And Diia is still acting up.”

Mélovin said on the question on whether he had had a desire to withdraw following the delay of the results:

“Until the end, I believed that everything was honest. To return to the moment, when the difference between the first and second place was 600,000 votes. That’s a little bit strange.”

Mélovin further claimed that he had heard rumours from employees of the Ukrainian public broadcaster that alyona alyona and YAKTAK’s label ENKO had promised to reduce the costs of the Ukrainian participation at the contest. At this moment, this statement cannot be confirmed and Suspilne and ENKO have not responded.

The Eurovision 2018 alumn added that Ziferblat had been his personal favourite.

On Instagram, he posted a fragment of the interview with the following comments:

“My first official commentary. Do I agree with the voting? It leads to a lot of questions: the crash of Diia, it’s impossible, because even the hackers of the occupier try it every day; the difference between first and second place with 600,000 – a question; and also, who will explain the voting of the jury for those who were criticised but received a higher score…”

Update 11:00 CET: Mélovin congratulates winners

Around 10:30 CET, Mélovin posted a picture on Instagram on which he congratulated Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil with their Vidbir 2024 victory.

The “Dreamer” singer had earlier congratulated the duo on his Instagram stories that morning and added the post to clarify his statements on television the evening before.

He wrote amongst others:

“I sincerely wish the winners alyona alyona & Jerry Heil to properly represent our country on the European stage. Break and win the listener!”

“Because as I said in every interview, their song is crazy! And I listened to it on repeat! Therefore, dear commentators, your attempts to put on the shirt of a victim who does not know how to lose look rather strange. I have a grain of doubt about the voting, but NOT to our winners.”

Let’s clarify, it wasn’t fishy at all
If you see the Ukrainian ESC videos, you will understand the HUGE difference! Alyona & Jerry has million of views after their live performance and thousands of comments. On the other hand, Melovin has so little views…
Ukraine people love Alyona & Jerry.
ESC fans prefer Melovin but at the end of the day Ukraine people voted for their song. It’s so fair.
It’s sad when you don’t recognise that you lost. Also, Dotter did it first Melovin!
You copy paste her performance….

He has a point, looking at the percentages, they won 62%, Yaktak 9% and Melovin 7%, does seem a bit fishy. Even though they were favourites, everyone was expecting it to be close, not a massive landslide. More than 7% of people liked Melovin’s entry surely?

Melovin don’t act like a sore loser. Besides you’ve already been to Eurovision in 2018. Give a chance to others

Losing is disappointing, but saying the vote was rigged is not the way to deal with it. It just makes someone look like a really bad loser.

I’m tired of Vidbir unnecessarily having some sort of drama every single year but, despite some suspicious elements, the winners seem fair and square and he comes off as a sore loser

And also, despite me not liking her song this year, I’m glad that Jerry has finally got her chance to go to Eurovision!

Alyona and Jerry have aggressive marketing this year in Ukraine to promote their song. Their ads been everywhere. All bloggers where promoting them. + they have a huge base of fans. A lot of people who voted for them even didn’t listen to their live performance.

Other participants don’t have so much money to spend on PR. But that doesn’t diminish the quality of their music.

I admit, Melovin’s performance was surprisingly strong but that still doesn’t make his song any better. The winning song is better than his but its lyrics are still too bad in so many ways that I can’t like it. And Melovin does have a point, the difference of votes between 1st and 2nd is unbelievable, especially considering it’s 1 vote per person. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but the original voting malfunction leaves a question mark imo.

Melovins song is not good at all…it feels dated and more like a demo actually. Also the staging took some time before it got good… the song definitely would have had good of a revamp. Its quite tiring to see these complaints every year in Ukraine though… why are they even taking part in Vidbir?

On the contrary, there been this program in the Litvarian media going round that explains how 6913 experts were chosen from around Dontella and they all voted Melovin to the forefront in comparison to the other songs when presented with them. ‘Dreamer’ was ranked alongside all the other national final songs and won!

No matter how huge favourites they were it still feels deeply unrealistic that Melovin didn’t even get 100k votes and suddenly they got over 600k votes.

translation: melovin does not accept the fact that he lost to the fan’s favourite entry this year. Alyona and Jerry are huge in Ukraine, Jerry is an incredibly talented woman. She has been trying to represent Ukraine for years and never succeeded (she deserved to win last year) so it makes no sense to make up fake conspiracy theories when she never had a special treatment before. Instead of whining he should focus on producing a better song.

Melovin’s prime is over. His fans grew up, he cannot dominate Ukrainian stage with these Swedish authored English songs, his songs in Ukrainian aren’t making rounds either. alyona and Jerry on the other hand are A-list Ukrainian artists. Good luck to Mel, buy may he gathers attention with his songs, not with shade-throwing.

Alyona and Jerry’s fanbase is absolutely huge in Ukraine. Mélovin is popular, but not in the same region. The result reflects the popularity of the artists and the song. Very dissapointed in this reaction from Mel. I think his ego is bigger than his actual succes. Just check the views of both songs on youtube, that says it all.

Jerry & Alyona had multiple times more YT views than anyone else. Odds had them at around a 60% of probability to win. I wouldn’t doubt the legitimacy of their win at all. I would, however, demand of the juries to be nicer to the contestants when analysing their songs. But that’s already an ages long issue in Vidbir. And if the Ukrainian people were bothered by it, they probably wouldn’t have picked the same judges. So, perhaps this approach just works in Ukraine?

Every year with Ukraine there is a Eurovision selection issue. I wonder now when they say the jury was selected by the public that was true. I just feel deeply uncomfortable with this behind the scenes manipulation so much so ive lost all interest in their song and representatives.

I believe you misrepresented situation. Vidbir did have drama with results last few years. But never behind the scenes, vote rigging or anything like what you imply – but rather public and quite in your face. Nothing was hidden. Though it was still unpleasant and avoidable in future, the reasons and debate was public and open. Not like someone rigged votes, but problems were that the rules and their enforcement hasn’t been clarified enough.

Still there was tons of drama, but I believe you imply something factually different that did not happen.

Skylerr can’t be the only one.

The jury giving 11 points to that one band and taking some other acts was a bit strange, plus their overly negative comments.

Melovin overperformed his song. I was expecting a complete flop from him but he sang well and had decent staging.

Olena
Olena

Both Skylerr and Melovin are trying to play the victims. It’s all just PR, they’re desperate for attention even if out of pity.
Ziferblat performed live better than others, and no wonder the jury has picked them as their winner. They were serving quality.
The negative comments are easily explained. People and competitors in Ukraine get pissed and confused if someone’s getting low points while receiving overall positive feedback from the jury. So now the jury aren’t sugarcoating anything.
Mel copypasted his staging from Alekseev 2018. But vocally? Killed it.
