“October Rain,” a song that refers to the October 7 attacks in Israel, is reportedly in contention to become Eden Golan’s Eurovision 2024 song.

That’s according to Eran Swissa, a journalist at Israel Hayom. He has a track record for breaking Eurovision-related news in his country.

He explained that the song’s producers have threatened to pull the song because of disagreements about dividing royalties.

“The chosen song was written by Avi Ohayon and Keren Peles and at the request of the [broadcasting] corporation,” he writes. “Stav Beger joined work on it only after it was written.”

Mr. Berger wants to be listed as one of the song’s producers, while Mr. Ohayon wants him to have a lesser title, which would result in smaller royalties.

“If the sides do not reach an agreement, Ohayon has threatened to withdraw the song he submitted.”

The song is mostly in English except for two lines in Hebrew.

The broadcaster won’t confirm any of the information. Responding to Israel Hayom they said: “We will not deal with such queries and publications until it is announced what the song that represents Israel is.”

October Rain: Can Israel send a politically-loaded song to Eurovision?

The news that songwriters are fighting hasn’t been the main point of discussion among international fans. Instead the focus has been on the political nature of the song title.

Fans have pointed out that the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest expressly forbid political content. That was the reason Georgia’s Eurovision 2009 entry “I Don’t Want to Put In” was banned. And that’s also why, more recently, Belarus’s 2021 entry was disqualified before Belarus was excluded from the contest.

At the same time, however, others point out that political content has been allowed in the near past. Music is born of the times and reflects the feelings of those who perform it.

Ukraine’s 2016 entry, for instance, recounted the forced deportation of Crimean Tatars under Josef Stalin. That Jamala chose to sing this in the years after Russia invaded Crimea gave the song a distinct political flavour. And then there were the opening lyrics: “When strangers are coming, they come to your house, they kill you all and say, ‘We’re not guilty.'”

Jamala always maintained the song was “personal” and not political…even if the title “1944” pointed to very specific events (and atrocities). She was allowed to compete — and she won.

To discuss the issue a bit more objectively and compare it to 1944, it would be necessary to see which lines exactly are being perceived as “political al” rather than the expression of a subjective experience? You can’t allow it in one case and not allow it in another case without a very clear concrete comperative analysis. To fair, the eurovision is unfortunaly getting farer and farer to be a unpolitical. The only political purpose should be to be the peace project for which it was founded after WW2, which would include to understand each other. From what I am… Read more »

Ynet has reported that EBU is considering to disqualify Israel if they do not replace this song with another one. KAN also stated that they will not replace it, even if their participation would be in jeopardy.

‘Anti-semites’ is a word that I see doing some serious heavy lifting in these comment sections.
Never surprises me to see Israeli’s trying anything they can to accuse people of something whilst painting themselves to be victims. Clever tactics, but it doesn’t take away the truth that Israel have been prevalent in the death and destruction of many innocent people for at least the past 50 years.

So yes, keep throwing about that fashionable term ‘anti-semite’. It makes you look desperate. Lol

3- Israel is not imperialist, it is a sovereign country that most countries of the world recognize, including Arab countries such as Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, and even the Palestinians recognized its sovereignty in the Oslo Accords.

I’m just so tired and disappointed.

I’m disappointed in the EBU for not taking a stance against Israel or its broadcaster, I’m tired of the constant debates with Zionists and I’m disappointed that my favorite event of the year will be corrupted by whatever propaganda Israel sends.

Eurovision this year doesn’t feel as exciting. This is a time to be united through music, but it feels like the most divisive year to date. Ban Israel now.

Please hear me out, this is a personal opinion, so please don’t start accusing me of being antisemitic because, before you do, I want to clarify that I am Jewish. I agree Israel has the right to participate, like every year. However, I think this year they should not use the contest as a propaganda platform for whitewashing, pink washing, or dragging Europe into this dreadful conflict. If Israel proceeds to the final this year, it should be based on the public vote and support for the song, not on Israel’s stance in the conflict. However, my concern is with… Read more »

Israel is allowed to sing about their painful moments and it’s not propaganda.
Moreover, you don’t want Israel to drag Europe into this conflict – the reality is that European countries are dragging themselves into it, thinking they are all experts without living with a threat right next door.
I’m mostly surprised by Finnish people, who do live next to a threat.
I don’t want them to wake up only after they’re attacked.

I disagree with you, very much considering this as propaganda and it doesn’t really have a place any more in a democratic Europe. It’s old school, but unfortunately, it still exists not just in Israel. Europe will make their decision in May and we will see. if Israel fails to qualify then a strong message will be made by Europe. You never know until May this may very well change. Another thing is the singer representing Israel is also Russian and has performed in an occupied Crimea. This is not going to go down well either in some countries. Just… Read more »

Russia being banned and Israel not, are a technically a bit different issues. Considering sanctions, EBU and Russian TV would not be able to conduct business, while there are no sanctions against Israel.

Comparing Jamala, 1944 (and I am even not a fan of that song), and some potential song that references events that are still ongoing, is not really possible.

If Israel does send a song like that, it could very well backfire, considering overall sentiment to current events, therefore even if it is good could stay in semifinal as its televote only!

True. Jamala blurred the content of ‘1944’ to make it sounds like a song about a non-specific suffering moment and it still went on stage. People literally supported it and voted for it. If ‘October Rain’ do the same, I won’t get why people would complain

There truly is some extra hate for Israelis and it’s something I have experienced myself my whole life. I like playing video games and every time when people found out I’m Israeli, they either tried to ruin my chances of winning (even if it’s a team game and they will also lose) or just throw their political anger at me, as if I’m the country… Even nowadays, people are hating on me while Russians for example or Syrians aren’t getting the same hate while standing right next to me in those games. (They shouldn’t get, they are just people, not… Read more »

It is if it refers to what is going on with Palestine. The word ‘October’ is what is setting a lot of people off. If it was about something vague, we would not be talking here.

Jamala sang a song titled 1944, Ester Peony and Reiley (Romania 19 and Denmark 23) included September in their lyrics, what’s the problem?
We are obviouslu referring to something that happened in a specific moment.
Once again, we should wait for the official announcement and not just follow rumours blindly.

Difference though..
1944 was vague enough to be approved, and the lyrics did not reflect current events. It was the audience that made the connection..
But a title like October Rain is not vague at all,it tells the audience what it is about. It directly refers to a political current event

I don’t think there’s anything political about singing about our pain.
Do you want us to name it 1939? And then refer to October 2023?
The title isn’t the issue here and all we have now is a rumoured title, not even an official one.
Let’s all take a deep breath and wait for the official song to come out and judge the lyrics.
I truly believe the EBU doesn’t want a political song in the contest, but people are going to call anything political these days, just like they’re calling any war “gen0cide” these days.

How about, Wiwibloggs, we wait for the song to be released and THEN judge the song? Before trying to make everyone think it’s too political in advance?
Obviously Israelis feel like talking about these events because it hurts, but the question is, what do you consider political?
If we just sing about our pain, is it a forbidden type of political song?
Numerous countries sang about painful events in their history… Ukrain 2016, Armenia 2015 etc.
Even if it is out song, eventually, let’s wait to hear it, come on…

Ukraine are special, and Armenia 2015 was more about armenian culture worldwide and something historical, i mean genealogy was formed out of armenians across the world coming together for one special magical performance

I know, but they had to change their title of the song as well, probably referring to the Armenian gen0cide (a true one, by the way, unlike the claims for a gen0cide right now by Israel)

That’s exactly what the Turks said, they demonised Armenians as “traitors” and “anti-nationalists”, just as Israel is demonising the residents of g a z and the w e st banque (with government ministers calling them “animals”). No g. Enocidal regime is ever going to openly admit to what they are doing.

Stop twisting my words, and reality.
H@mas is NOT the Palestinians, I can’t emphasize this enough.
The Palestinian people are not treated well by H@mas.
We call H@mas animals, not the Palestinians themselves who simply want to make a living and live in peace.
If you want to compare the innocent people to the animals who attacked us, you’re the problem.

Tell that to your bloodthirsty government then. Because they are not following this line of thinking, and that is what the rest of the world is seeing. I understand that not all Isrealis think this about Palestinians on a personal level, but that is the policy your government is pursuing.

You may think that way, but it’s just not true.
We all see the difference between H@mas and the Palestinians.
You have every right to criticise the actions of the war, but no one here is really thinking they’re all the same.
Unfortunately, we do have some extremists in the coalition but they’re not quite those who make the decisions in this war

Btw I find it very petty from wiwibloggs to post anything about the Israeli selection except when Eden won and allow one of their reporters to write an article about something non-official and political that will 100% lead people to argue in the comment section and make it explode. That’s very low from you guys.

At the official press conferences with the IDF spokesperson, they visited the destroyed Kibbutzim in the south, some have entered the strip as well, so what are you talking about??

The international press could only see and hear what the Israeli government wanted to show and say. In fact there is not a single Western journalist covering the news in the center of the war as they can in Ukraine. Thats the reality. If one is not afraid to show the truth, why hide it?

Roy Moreno

As far as I remember, I have seen journalists covering the war from inside the strip, so again, no idea what you’re talking about.
Other than that, if one of them dies there, everyone will just blame us for killing journalists, so even if Israel decided not to let any of them go in, I think it’s a fine reason.
Anyway, you can get a lot of footage from the Palestinians themselves, though I wouldn’t trust it 100%. I’ve discovered some lies from them myself.

No because I never bothered checking their names, but I have seen the reports.
Journalists might know their work and where to go but facts are, they still get hurt sometimes.
There’s nothing to hide there, everybody can see the pictures from the strip and see the destruction.

No offense to Wiwi, but I doubt that showing a bunch of leftist tweets is necessarily an accurate representation of the issue and I say that as a literal socialist. Furthermore, any speculation is unwarranted until we’ve, you know, heard the song.

I also kind of dislike the implications that Eurovision was nice and apolitical Heaven before Jamala arrived. It’s a song contest in the first year of which Germany sent a song by a Jewish Holocaust survivor. It was never – and I mean never – apolitical.
