As one of the most anticipated songs of the year, the pressure has been on the United Kingdom’s Olly Alexander. Olly was internally picked by the BBC and, shortly after the announcement, he promised a banger, which finally dropped on March 1. Inspired by the Pet Shop Boys and serving a distinct 80s vibe, the pop anthem is definitely one to dance to. But it’s not just a bop. As Olly wrote on Twitter, it’s “about an overwhelming feeling of love for somebody that’s so intense it turns your world upside down.”

United Kingdom at Eurovision 2024: Olly Alexander with “Dizzy”
As a Brit nominee with two number one albums, Olly Alexander is one of the most revered young artists in the United Kingdom. He started making his name in the mid-00s with electro-pop, along with his former bandmates from Years & Years. British Eurofans have long hoped that he would consider representing the UK at Eurovision, including during a period in 2022 when it was heavily rumoured he’d been selected, before Sam Ryder was ultimately announced.
Back in December, fans were utterly delighted when Olly was revealed as the British act during the final of one of the BBC’s flagship shows Strictly Come Dancing. Olly then revealed that he had wanted to do Eurovision back in 2022, but said the timing wasn’t quite right. Once he crafted “Dizzy” with British songwriter and producer Danny L Harle, he knew this was the time. And so did the BBC: they picked him from a competitive field in the summer of 2023.
What do the “Dizzy” lyrics mean?
Olly Alexander is a queer icon in the UK and beyond, and has never been shy about making songs about love, affection and infatuation with other men. Songs like “Starstruck” delved into the majestic feeling of being with someone and adoring them. “Sweet Talker” (with Swedish star Galantis) and “If You’re Over Me” talk about the other side of a relationship when things go wrong. Despite the sadder themes, they both remain bangers.
So it’s no surprise that Olly has written about love once again. “Dizzy” is a nostalgic piece, with Olly’s distinctive vocals luring you in from the beginning.
“Time has frozen, all memories lost”
The “Dizzy” lyrics revolve around Olly being so enamoured with his lover that their kisses literally make him dizzy. There are references to time throughout. Sometimes it’s frozen, because Olly is so lost in the moment. At other times he’s desperate to rewind and start from the beginning. The latter may explain the repetition of the chorus so early in the song: Olly wants to stop, start over and feel that sensation again.

As if it it isn’t enough to be dazed by love, Olly says he wants to be spun round and round. He wants to sink deeper into the feeling, pulling his partner with him. In the bridge, he repeats, “There isn’t an end, there isn’t a start, I don’t wanna stop, I can’t go too far” — this embrace will last forever and he never wants to be pulled away.

I love the melody and lyrics for the first verse. It’s a shame the second verse feels cut short and the lyrics of the quiet (refrain) chorus are the same as all the chorus’. This would have been an ideal moment to change things up a bit or to revisit the reference to gardens and flowers or lines to circles which are lovely sentiments. I will be honest: there’s not a lot to say about the song’s lyrics or the music. It’s nice when it’s on but I wouldn’t be able to pick it out of a lineup.
Exactly. Nothing really wrong with it. But there is also nothing about it that will make me seek it out for a listen.
The song is just bland and has its bland chorus on repeat again and again. Like, what was all the hype about? Last year’s song was miles better

I know that the BBC hasn’t always brought it’s A game to eurovision but in my darker moments I often wondered if some of our “ok” entries had represented other countries that they might have fared better. From the 1960’s to early 90`s we couldn’t put a foot wrong which is the root of the problem. British pop experienced huge success beyond our shores while other participating countries produced songs with a more local appeal. French language songs dominated the top 5 and the UK and Ireland benefitted from being the only 2 English language entries until the national language… Read more »

I don’t agree. The potential to reach a global market is a huge selling point for any artist. Luckily the general public still listen to artists who my have faltered at Eurovision. The attitude to the contest has c hanged in the UK. Coming last won’t necessarily kill an established artist’s UK career.
This is Winner potential, or at the very least Top 10. No to everything except a potential top 10, HOWEVER: the entire song is literally a flatline without a “moment” (doesn’t need to be a vocal moment, but even a music change could work very well here). What worries me the most about this track is how predictable it is… And by minute 1-1:30, I am so bored, sleepy and fighting to stay awake. Winner? Top 10? Gurrrrl, the level of delusion!!
Well if it’s well received in this country achieves a top 10 in our music charts then automatically that’s where it deserves in Eurovision, like most artists this year are amateurs in comparison that would struggle to have an international career.
Why is it delusion? Explain it to me. From a comparatively weak edition of the contest this stands out as a very well produced song with a high amount of potential.
Unless your family are members of every country’s jury, the fact that they think it is top 5 doesn’t mean much… My mother voted for S!sters – Sister’ lol.
It was an example of how this song crosses generations and can be accepted in palatable way for all age groups to enjoy it without being duplicitous or off-putting.
I saw his interview with Graham Norton, Olly is so kind, so humble… stay strong Olly and don’t listen the bad eurofans, they are useless.

BBC backing all the way? The song released 1 March. Radio1 playlist updated same day. No sign of Dizzy on A,B or C list. Radio 2 published later today i will check with interest.
Just a thought on staging wouldn’t it be marvelous if the Pet Shop Boys could appear in the background and the spoken bridge recited by Neil Tennant. Olly ring them now and let them build a big crescendo at the end on the spare 15 seconds of song.

What a short memory you have. When “I wrote a song” was released, the reaction was highly positive. It was her live performance of what I agree was a very mediocre song that killed it. The opposite is the case here. This is a good song which I for one have no doubt will come alive when Olly brings his charisma and creativity to the stage. No I’m not deluded. Just a very long standing esc fan with an opinion.
That’s right Lawrence. Also when “Space Man” was released in 2022 it was bashed from the fan community and not only and ended up winning the jury vote and almost the whole contest if it wasn’t for Ukraine. I also have faith in Olly and the potential of the song and his performance. I’m certain that “Dizzy” will be very high with the juries and I think that the general public will appreciate it much more than the community.
PS. I’m also not delusional and fan of the contest for over 30 years 😉
Not that it’s a competition ThorBeta but for me it’s approaching 60 years. My first consciousness of the contest was in 1967 when the buzz around Sandie Shaw reached even my 9 year old years. I wasn’t allowed to stay up for it but when my mum came in to check on me I asked her if we’d won and that was me on the slippery slope. The first contest I was allowed to watch was 1970.???

Same here as well Lawrence 1967 was the year for me as well. I had to laugh when Olly was being interviewed by Graham Norton and was told his home town Harrogate had once hosted the show and he didn’t know.
