In November The Sun claimed that Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander was in advanced discussions to sing for the U.K. at Eurovision — and with a song from Dua Lipa.

And on Saturday night Olly confirmed that he will in fact represent the U.K. at the song contest in Malmö.

“I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true,” he told host Claudia Winkleman during the voting interval of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing finale. “I’m just so, so excited.”

In a press release, he added: “I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible.”

“I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”

United Kingdom: Olly Alexander confirms Eurovision 2024 participation

The Sun‘s November report claimed that his song was a collab with Danny L Harle, who worked on Dua’s “Houdini” and Charli XCX’s “Anthems,” among others. On Saturday the BBC confirmed that is also true.

Writing on Instagram, Olly conveyed his enthusiasm for Eurovision and framed it as an opportunity to start releasing solo music under his own name. Since 2021 he’s been the sole remaining member of the group, but still released songs as Years and Years.

“This was very difficult to keep quiet omg!! so excited to announce that I’m the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2024!”

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got. i shall put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!! let’s do this!!!”

BBC viewers will remember that Olly has a long-standing relationship with the corporation. He helped ring in 2022 as the star of the BBC’s annual New Year’s Eve broadcast, performing a series of his hits in the build-up to midnight. He also duetted with Kylie Minogue.

Olly has earned five UK top 10 singles and two number one albums over the past decade with Years and Years. As the BBC reports, the group has also hit the charts in Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden — all of which vote at Eurovision.

BBC Press Release on Olly’s Eurovision Participation

One of the world’s most pioneering and multi-award winning music superstars, Olly Alexander, will represent the United Kingdom at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden in May 2024.

Olly revealed the news during the Grand Final of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday 16 December to a delighted studio audience and to the millions of viewers watching at home.

As he embarks on the first release under his own name, Olly Alexander remains one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars. Across three hugely successful albums to date, the singer, actor and fashion icon has scored 2 #1 UK albums, 10 UK Top 40 singles and was recently awarded the BRIT Billion Award (with 6.5 billion streams globally). With Years & Years evolving into a solo project and, in 2024, a brand new solo era, Olly has become a once-in-a-generation voice: the Russell T Davies show ‘It’s A Sin’ won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards, with Olly also nominated for Leading Actor at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards.

Having headlined arenas and festivals worldwide – not to mention collaborating with the likes of Sir Elton John, Kylie, and Pet Shop Boys – Olly Alexander’s icon-status recently saw him immortalised at Madame Tussauds London: a fitting home for a pop star who has helped change British culture forever, and now represents the UK on the Eurovision stage.

Olly Alexander says: “I’ve loved watching Eurovision ever since I was a little kid and I’m beyond excited to be taking part next year. As a young boy I always looked forward to this incredible event of unbridled joy, the wonderfully chaotic mix of musical styles, theatrical performances, heartfelt emotion and humour. I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible, it shall be an honour! I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”

Ben Mortimer, President Polydor Records says: “Polydor, as the British home of ABBA and Loreen, have a deep connection with Sweden and Eurovision. And, we also have a deep connection with the trailblazing, cultural force that is Olly Alexander, who we have worked with for almost ten years. He is quite simply an incredible talent who we are convinced will make a huge impact for the UK in this year’s competition. We are proud to be supporting him in his bid for Eurovision success.”

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC says: “To have an artist of Olly Alexander’s calibre representing the UK in Malmö in 2024 is testament to just how much the BBC wants to keep momentum of Eurovision riding high since the UK had the honour of hosting the contest on behalf of Ukraine in Liverpool earlier this year. Olly is the perfect ambassador for the UK as both an immensely talented and world renowned artist and passionate fan of the competition.”

Suzy Lamb, MD of Entertainment & Music at BBC Studios, says: “BBC Studios is so excited to be working with the incredible Olly Alexander to create something very special for the UK at Eurovision. Olly is a world class, charismatic performer and we can’t wait for him to raise the roof at next year’s contest in Sweden.”

All three live Eurovision 2024 programmes – both Semi Finals and the Grand Final – will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 7, 9 and 11 May 2024.

Olly’s UK Eurovision song, co-written with Danny L Harle, will be revealed in due course.

The BBC’s Eurovision Song Contest 2024 coverage is a BBC Studios Entertainment production, commissioned by Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC. The Executive Producers are Andrew Cartmell and Lee Smithurst. The Creative Director for BBC Studios Entertainment North is Pete Ogden and Suzy Lamb is the Managing Director of Entertainment & Music at BBC Studios. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Katie Taylor.

Years & Years Perform ‘King’ (LIVE) | YouTube Pride 2021

BBC. calls him ‘One of the world’s most pioneering and multi-award winning music superstars’ but he has only 700.000 followers…. on Instagram, Sam Ryder has millions. Nevertheless I hope he will surprise me with his song, good luck.

Years and Years have had two number one albums in the UK and sold 2.5 million records worldwide, I don’t think number of followers on Instagram is necessarily the number one indicator of success.

It could be it, was an indication in Sam’s case, together with his huge TikTok following. I’m not in love with Ollie’s voice, but maybe his song is going to surprise me.

I can’t see olly winning. He is too pop music. Eurovision is moving into the crazier side and more ethnic side of music. Kaarija will spark a transition this year which won’t include a normal pop tune.
I wish him well though

Seems like the UK is reaching the heights of Italy and Sweden if we keep this up, 2nd in ESC 2022, 5th in JESC 2022, (Mae Muller would have probably been kind of lower top 10 with better vocals and running order), And 4th in JESC 2023, so 3 out of 4 of our recent ESC / JESC entries have been top 5

Come to think of it, the luck of the random draw for first half decided that Romania wouldn’t be last and San Marino would be because Romania performed earlier. How stupid is that? When you both get 0, you should both be last. Imagine two countries get 0 and are drawn in the same half. Then, the producers actually decide the ranking. So many stupid aspects of the EBU rules, it never ends. lol

I saw him life in Untold in Romania and finally UK sends someone who has amazing life vocals (like Sam also did). I hope the song is good. If it is it will sweep northern and Western Europe’s 12s.
However he is very obvious gay and this may turn away the main stream voters in Eastern Europe. Boy I hope I am wrong I love him.
In any case amazing choice UK now match it with amazing song and we will have a fan favourite ??

I would have thought the same about eastern Europe some years ago but look, Belgium received the 12 points from Georgian jury last year and this was the biggest urprise of the night for me. I will say also that despite the demographic he was attempting to win over, he ended up getting the family vote like Poland and Albania because his voice was jazzy and obviously on a different category to some of the more contemporary singers. And behind the scenes it wasn’t all blood and glitter for him.

I am going to go on a happy rant about this because I am honestly in disbelief. Absolutely delighted with this news as this is exactly what the UK needed. After making great progress last year while hosting the contest, Mae’s result certainly seemed like a bump in the road along a good trajectory. I too was somewhat worried when TaP Music ended their partnership with Eurovision by handing the baton back to the BBC, worrying that they’d be going back to the 2015-2021 years and undoing all their progress. That was until I heard that they had done their… Read more »

I suppose this resonates even more with me as an Irish Eurovision fan (yes, I am ashamed too). Funnily enough I became a fan in 2014, meaning that I have only seen my country qualify for the final once (and it was so surreal when it happened seeing as no one thought it was going through). Back in 2014, the aforementioned political excuse was still somewhat echoing around western Europe, although to a lesser degree than the 2000s. Though nowadays, seeing as the likes of France, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain and the UK have all made strides to better themselves at… Read more »

I mean, we already got a 2nd place entry and a chance to host last year – so we’re back on track. Also, there were a bunch of songs that we sent which weren’t the worse that should have done better, especially 2017 that it’s hard for people to explain other than politics. Ukraine got a large televote due to sympathy points a few years ago so it defo Italy still exists but it’s definitely less of a barrier or mental threat for us.

One thing to note is that The UK will be very soon the country with the most bets on it overpassing Israel. Who dares to bet for Eurovision 2024, we’re still in 2023…. moreover the 2 most betted countries now have not even yet a song….totally crazy these gamblers, I follow a bit the market and since The UK announcement nearly 1000 livres sterling have been betted it’s peanuts but enough to make move the bookies and the market at this time of the year.

First Raiven, now this… all these announcements sound promising. But they mean nothing yet without songs to back it up. But so far, it looks like it’s shaping up to be quite a year. And it should be. Liverpool was such a weak edition, there should be like ten or at least five real contenders in Malmö to make up for that. Ten is delusional, I know. But five would be nice.

This is really promising for the UK! Ollie is a good singer, great performer, relatively recognisable outside of the UK… With a good song, this whole package could deliver something great! I’m intrigued.

Well, he’s in the band Years&Years – they have a few recognisable songs, but it’s possible not to know Olly by name. He is also an actor with a fantastic breakthrough role in Russel T. Davies’ miniseries “It’s a Sin.”
So he isn’t an unknown name, I’d say especially in lgbt circles.

It’s a sin is how I first heard Olly’s name, as an actor first.

The song “King” by his band has over half a billion streams on Spotify and I’ve definitely heard it played on the radio etc. (I’m not from the UK). So I think at least some of the Eurovision audience might know him 🙂
Whether or not that will help him with points is not at all certain.

Absolutely flabbergasted! Really appreciate the BBC announcing him much earlier than usual and in such a way. I’d argue that Olly is bigger than Blue as their peak was in the 00s and they came back after a hiatus. Olly is still very much in his prime.

Oh wow, what a surprise!! UK rarely announces their act this early on. I think they must have got something special, at least that’s what I hope for. I like his song “King”, but I’m hoping it’s not one of those one hit wonder artists that flop at Eurovision..

He better start finding a way to improve his live vocals or it will be like UK 2023. I never find a good KING live performance.

There are tons of good sanctify / desire performances tho. So I guess it’s rather a question of song. I hope he will be at ease with his ESC song

He can hold a tune, so I’m not worried of a Mae.2. What he lacks is range, so that does concern me in a competitive song competition. I know he will bring his A game to the stage performance. All down to the song which we can speculate will be a Dua Lipa style modern disco-esque song. La Zarra, a fan fave came 16th last year with a Dua song.

Arrfff La Zarra, I’ve still not recovered from my sadness seeing her results…. killed by the running order, as Teya and Salena by the way, thank you Twan I will never forget.

La Zarra was not killed by the running order. Maro in 2022 got a top10 result while performing 3rd, so even earlier. Subwoolfers top10 also performing 7th.

The opening spot is very complicated, but the spots after can give you a decent result.

The jury and audience just didn’t vibe with La Zarra.

She looked so uncomfortable on the tower on stage, I don’t think it was the running order, her performance simply wasn’t good enough.

They really sprung that surprise on us randomly without revealing the song lol! But seriously, the rumours were true! Must have been an open secret! Olly should do better than Mae Muller. He’s a good live singer and this writer sounds like a good song could be created. I wish him the best.

His band Years & Years has scored a couple of pretty big hits, so it would not be strange if you knew him. And imho they’ve had a couple of songs with great Eurovision potential, so I find this promising for the UK. Although sending a big name doesn’t mean success guaranteed of course.

Inclusion of pronouns.

We’ve never heard that in a gay song in all 67 years of the contest. Except for maybe Brividi but only sorta kinda. Think Switzerland 2019, but now called He Got Me.

I don’t know if we NEED it, but I WANT it. Once in 67 years is not too much to ask. Up to now, the “gay” has always been dialled down so as not to frighten the heteros. This time I’d like it dialled UP, please.

Anyway, you are misunderstanding my point. A simple thing like the inclusion of pronouns is the exact opposite of making a big deal of it. All it is is incidental, which up to now has been too much to ask for. No grand razzle dazzle or drag or rainbows, just a mere he/him.

It is quite stupid to point out that “his” pronouns are he/him. He IS a Guy and both traditionally and grammtically “his” pronouns are he/him. Why is It so necessary to point out the evident?

A song about gay men. That is all. A gay booty hypnotic. Where they are not afraid to let the lyrics show that is about two men. Using pronouns like he, or words like boy, man, or whatever. Something you would know was gay without the visuals. Even the gayest acts like Conchita have nothing overtly gay in the lyrics, meanwhile hetero acts are never afraid to use pronouns, or have some dirty dancing like Switzerland 2019.

People have questioned his vocals live but there are plenty of live clips on you tube and he does just fine. And I’m pretty confident, if the song has been written for him, it will be one he can carry.

It’s something I’m a little bit concerned about, I’ve seen him sound very flat, but these clips were concerts. Singing at Eurovision will be very different to be fair.
I agree with your last sentence, I’ve noticed I’m not the only one commenting about possible weak vocals, I’m wondering if there’s just a lot of anxiety after Mae’s vocals last year.
