It’s the last national selection of the season and now Portugal have chosen their artist for Eurovision 2024 at the grand final of Festival da Canção.
Out of 20 initial competitors, 12 made it to this final stage of the contest.
But by the end of the night, it was Iolanda who walked away with a ticket to Malmö. She’ll represent Portugal with her song “Grito”.

The results were determined by both a professional jury and the public voting at home. Each counted for 50% of the overall outcome.

Songs like this emotional they put dancer’s around and distract the attention to the song mess-up the performance with that silliness, this is not something uncommon in eurovision, many entries are butchered like that

Portugal once again bringing quality, feelings and a great voice. A delicious song among the other chachacha songs of this year. Luck and best wishes from a neighbour of Seville.
I actually think that a ballad this year has a higher chance of qualifying than usual because there is so little competition in the lane.
That’s a good point. As much as some people were fretting about whether Portugal could qualify from semifinal one this year, grito being one of only two ballads in this semifinal, might be at advantage. And it’s in the second half, so it would likely be remembered by more people, although I think Serbia will be fine with its other neighbors in the semifinal too.

Yeah, you are right, I completely forgot Mimicat. Although it was faster, still boring. But these ballads are 90% of their opus, the most predictable country that competes. Also, their NF has 0 variety.
Much more variety than Iceland, Norway or Sweden, sorry!
Tell us, poor uneducated souls, what a “song for ESC” is.
Something which is fresh, different, entertaining, no matter the genre. This is outdated, toilet break, seen a 1000 times already. It doesn’t matter the song is good or people would listen to it perhaps if they like this genre or Portuguese. We moved past these songs. The worst thing about ESC which many countries do is making songs influenced by past winners or trends. Just ask yourself would this win instead of Salvador Sobral that year? If the answer is no, why do you send it?
Perhaps if you identify your favourites from this year we could clarify if they satisfy “your criteria for a ESC song”. And don’t forget to justify.
We will be the judges to ascertain if your favourite songs are indeed “ESC songs”.
PS: You forgot to mention “represent a part of the country’s cultures – musical and artistic -, identity and authenticity.” Or perhaps the best song to represent some country is one that has nothing to do with the country.

Once again Portugal brings one of the best quality songs. With the mediocre 2024 ESC this song is obviously top 5 quality-wise. Maybe it is a NQ maybe not. All that say it is a NQ are the same that that said that Portugal would not qualify in 2017 and onwards, but a NQ only happened in 2019. So, the odds look good, and I think if you have 6 or 7 Kärijä wannabes in one SF the more serious entries will stand out.

It was a beautiful show, even the Abba medley. My favourite was No Maka but I do think that something classy like Grito will do well in Malmö amid all those other acts trying to be this year’s Cha-Cha-Slo-Mo.
Joao had a great song, I dont get why the juries tanked him
João’s song is great, but I think the juries were expecting more. The staging was underwhelming and disjointed.
However, I hope João returns in the near future with again, a good song, but with a concise and more interesting staging.
I wish the best to João and hope there will be more music and more nice touches as João does.

The staging is what makes the song better than last year’s so it has potential to qualify. However, in a televote only semi and so many good songs it will be a borderline if it gets through at all.
Beautiful song. Powerful voice. The only thing that bothers me is staging. In my opinion, I have a feeling that something traditional would fit more rather than this contemporary staging. Song and staging are not matching for me.
The last couple of years , Portugal has submitted good songs and this is no exception. I really like it. Well done Portugal!

And just like that, the national final season is all over. OK, we still have a few more songs to be released, but once they are, the Eurovision 2024 lineup is complete. What a journey, guys.

I wasn’t paying too much attention to Portugal this year, but Iolanda caught my attention in a good way and I’m happy that she won! 🙂
The top 3 vote getters continue to demonstrate that RTP is long behind in what the Portuguese public would like to see from FdC. More than 3/4s of the songs this year were light years behind what modern Portuguese audiences seek. And Farol being judged so highly clearly indicates juries still have this blind allegiance to any song that somehow resembles Amar Pelos Dois—failing to realize what made that song unique.

Perhaphs if this selection was from Italy or France, then people would say “It is so good!” or “It will finish top10, or even in the top5, garanteed”. Saying that it’s a boring song, or that it’s not memorable is, actually, the best way to say that the attention span of the average european and out of Europe citizen is low, and it is almost mandatory to have changes in the beat, rythm and lights just to have some kind of interest. The only other ballad in semifinal 1 is Serbia and Teya’s song is more memorable. I don’t think both will make it to the Finals.
More memorable exactly in what? Not in the voice and certainly not in the refrain.
Teya Dora’s voice sounds magical, def better then Iolandas. Ramonda’s chorus is super memorable, everyone can sing along while portugese song is 100% forgetable and full of too many foreign words that no one knows. Grito’s melody is years and miles behind Ramonda’s. Finaly, Serbia is a contender this year while Portugal is almost certain NQ. Cheers

I’m very proud of the selection of Iolanda (she was my first, Leo was my second, and João was my third). Regardless of the song, it was a difficult choice for the portuguese.
It isn’t an over-the-top performance, there is no introducing some flash light just to keep people interested, and it is performed well, with perfect vocals and also, it’s meaningful.
I just hope that every calm song deserves the same (if not more) respect as the more upbeat ones. Thank you for reading my opinion.

I’m not really sure what to say about this winning song. I don’t feel negative about it. Portugal always select something relatable to their culture not main stream nor left of field songs that grow over time. I think i need time to see if it grows on me.

Iolanda is perfect. Her voice, the song. I simply adore portuguese taste in music. “Love is on my side” and “Ai Coracao” were in my top 10, “Saudade Saudade” was my 2nd! Now “Grito” is my 3rd.

I watched someone’s Cancao Top 20 (don’t know when it was created) they rated Iolanda i12th I rated it 1st – chose the winner on a 10 second snippet. Just gone to the live feed to hear the whole song now – hope its good!
Wait…I think we found the biggest robbery of the season. Joao only got 6 points from the jury but got full marks from the public and then the odds favourite did much better as a result. Joao had better vocals on the night and great staging. Wtf is this system?
