From Geri Halliwell to Paloma Faith to Aiden Grimshaw, every single UK Eurovision rumour seemed to originate on Twitter. So now that we finally know who will be flying the Union Jack in Copenhagen, we decided to dip into the Twittersphere to judge the general reaction.
Many were optimistic
I am actually now officially looking forward to Eurovision in May! #powertothepeople #childrenoftheuniverse #Eurovision
— Seb Kapps (@goaround99) March 3, 2014
Some drew comparisons
Emma and the UK girl are amandine rip offs
— James Bohan (@JimboBohan) March 3, 2014
This year’s UK Eurovision entrant sounds a lot like Cyndi Lauper
— Tom Payne (@zappomatic) March 3, 2014
The UK’s entry sounds exactly like a DECENT version of Hanna Sky’s ‘Hope’ from the Finland national final #eurovision #umk14 — Tim B (@Reality_Tim) March 3, 2014
Others have already jumped the gun
@bbceurovision whoever picked @mollysd as our entry deserves a knighthood — Craig (@Craig_Esc) March 3, 2014
@mollysd you’re amazing, best UK entry ever! You have saved us :)) — James Elliott (@JamesElliott__) March 3, 2014
Most were a bit more restrained but positive nonetheless
At last a decent song from the UK. Love Molly’s voice and definitely a contender #Eurovision @bbceurovision — Brendan Bonner (@BrendanB2) March 3, 2014
@mollysd Great song. Sending much love from across the Atlantic (I’m in the US)
— Dezyree Bernardin (@dezbee2008) March 3, 2014
I have not seen one negative comment about Molly so far that shows she is brill 😀
— Jess (@ItsOnlyJess) March 3, 2014
So we all liking the #Eurovision song then…makes a nice change eh?! #Eurovision2014 #eurovisionuk
— Adrian Clarkson (@adrianclarkson) March 3, 2014
Certain people already consider it a favourite
Omg @mollysd has just went to the top of my top 37. #EurovisionUK #loveit!
— Eu-Eu MacAwesomeness (@ImFukinEuropean) March 3, 2014
UK can do great this year in #Eurovision. 😀 It’s amazing, but it’s not my personal favorite of all the songs.
— D?nnsh #ToTheSky (@DennshR) March 3, 2014
Of course there are always sceptics…
Can we not just enter a song that has all the qualities @GinaGOfficial had? Instead we once again get a boring plodding song. #eurovisionuk
— Rob Johnson (@aquaplex_) March 3, 2014
I guess they couldn’t afford Adele!! — Jay Aston (@astonarts) March 3, 2014
Not overly thrilled with our Eurovision entry… Yet again. — Robin Windsor (@Robinwindsor) March 3, 2014
#Eurovision is about first impressions. And my first impression is this year’s UK entry will not get the public vote unless with changes. — Adam R (@MrAdamR) March 3, 2014
Although they can be converted
First listen:nothing special. Second listen:hmm ok. Third listen:love #eurovisionuk
— Shannon Walker (@shannonwalker92) March 3, 2014
A lot were just glad for some modernity
Nice to see the UK take the contest seriously for once. Was a nice break from the Humps and Bonnie. #eurovisionuk
— Adam Hurley (@LetTheGaysBegin) March 3, 2014
Very modern sounding track from the UK, should do reasonably well #eurovision
— David (@PumpItLowda) March 3, 2014
There were plenty offering advice and support
I hope @bbceurovision get Mollie out there and promote this, and her. She’ll come across very well given a chance. #uk #Eurovision — Patrick McCurdie (@thatsbeaumont) March 3, 2014
@mollysd Hey Molly. You’ve got my full support. If you need any advice on how not to do it, I’m your guy! 😀 Break a leg, you’ll be great x — Josh James (@joshjamesworld) March 3, 2014
Real proud of my friend @mollysd representing the UK in this years Eurovision pic.twitter.com/O0C5mGN73u
— Darren Styles (@darrenstylesuk) March 3, 2014
And the news is even being used to gain recruits to the Euro-fandom
If we win this year, I’m going to be so proud! And I’ll get my sister watching it again! 😀 #eurovision #UK
— Moustache (@TARDIS_girl22) March 3, 2014
Does it have a hidden meaning?
Also ‘power to the people, ohh, ohh,oh, power to the people’ & to think some people accuse the BBC of a left wing bias haha ????????????????
— James (@AbundantJames) March 3, 2014
It’s always nice to see neighbours supporting each other
@bbceurovision congratulations from the Irish Eurovision Entry on your new song @can_linn @kaseykaysmith #heartbeat
— Can-linn (@can_linn) March 3, 2014
And not forgetting the main lady herself
Wow! Totally overwhelmed by your reaction to Children of the Universe and the fact that I will be representing… http://t.co/mZZpQBtM9a
