Along with host country Denmark, the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — get an automatic spot in the grand final of Eurovision. They drop a lot of euros on the contest, and we thank them for helping keep ESC afloat. We used to roll our eyes at the jokes these nations would send to the contest. But in recent years they have been earning their keep.
The trend continues in 2014. In the latest set of odds for the final, both Denmark and the United Kingdom are in the Top 10. But that’s not the only barometer of success. France is bringing major originality. Spain will deliver a beautiful ballad (and hopefully a bit of rain). Italy will rock on with one of its biggest stars, and Germany recently staged one of the glitziest national finals in Europe. They’ve all brought something to the table this season.
But who is YOUR favourite? You can listen to the six automatic qualifiers below and then vote in our poll. This poll will close on May 7 at midnight, a few days before the grand final on May 10. Let us know what you think!
The Automatic Qualifiers
Denmark: Basim with “Cliché Love Song”
France: Twin Twin with “Moustache”
Germany: Elaiza with “Is it Right”
Italy: Emma Marrone with “La Mia Citta”
Spain: Ruth Lorenzo with “Dancing in the Rain”
United Kingdom: Molly Smitten-Downes with “Children of the Universe”

The winner of Eurovision Song Contest is Spain! Madrid or Barcelona 2015!! I ???? it! C’Mon Ruth!! Europe Dancing in the rain!! Greetings ????
I think peace loving free democratic Europe and the world community must ban fascist state Russia and their vassal Armenia totally for the occupation of Crimea bearing in mind the occupation of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine by the mentioned authoritarian fascist states such as Russia and Armenia. We are in free Europe and beyond shouldn’t be categorically in the the same boat with gay haters, gay beaters, fascists, trolls, liars, fabricators, dictators, tyrants, aggressors and illegitimate occupants and their supporters! Boycott fascist Russia and their vassal dog Armenia! We show disrespect to our freedom, beliefs, sovereignty and democracy in Europe… Read more »
p.s. Azeri soul is brilliant. Thanks a lot!
Professional vocals are the below contestants with idyllic performance and music
1. Azerbaijan
2. San Marino
3. Sweden
Italy first
UK second

Fourth, fifth and sixth: difficult to put in order… I don’t like them! lol

1. Spain (Of course, I’m Spanish, but I really love Ruth)
2. UK (Amazing song, I love it)
3. Germany (Is It Right? Yes, ’cause I love it too!)
4. Italy (Emma hasn’t a good voice on the stage, but it’s a good song)
5. Frace (Funny, but they’re not singers, ESC is for singers, disaster like Spain 2008)
United Kingdom and France are going to win the competition!!! Go big5!!!
Of these songs, Italy is my favourite by far.
Next would be UK, France & Germany, in that order.
Can’t say I like Spain’s song much but it comes next.
Denmark gets a thumbs down. Why would you enter a song that, by it’s own admission, is a cliched love song. Surely the objective is to avoid cliches. Still it seems the kids like it.
Denmark
United Kingdom
France
Spain
Italy
Germany
Tough choice, I like them all. The UK finally has a great entry (curious to hear Graham Norton’s enthusiasm for the song and the overall contest), fan of Ruth since her X Factor days, always a fan of Italian music, and Germany was there to provide entertainment when I was sick during the national final and rooted for Elaiza when I first heard their chorus. France, eh, I like but maybe 5th. Denmark is catchy.
I love all of them this year (weird,.. xD)

@Eugene UK – I’ve been talking about the interval presentation of the “Big 5-6” with friends for a couple of years… too bad we all live across the ocean and there’s too few of us here 😉 Second the motion!
@Rashad – interesting and way too sad!
@ everyone – I am in awe at how much support Spain gets from everyone else but Spanish eurofans. Not that they won’t support DITR, but rather they are somehow tepid in comparison. Bravo Spain and the rest of the Big 6 this year!
I like them all except Italy.

where is the NONE option?
I know this is out of context, but I must say it. Recently there’s been something wrong going on in Denmark. As you may have heard in the Copenhagen Zoo a giraffe was shot to avoid inbreeding. A few days ago the Copenhagen Zoo killed 4 lions. This has nothing to do with Eurovision, but as it’s the host city maybe all the Eurovision fans can make a petition or make the EBU warn the authorities. I’m pretty sure Danish animal rights activists are not happy with it either. So we may become some support for them.

6. Denmark (why this country always sends blandness that always does well? 2013 was just a weird exception)
I think this is may be the first year since I can remember when I like all the big 6 songs! Denmark and France are fun an upbeat, which contrasts among so many ballads. I’m not sure if many people will appreciate them though, specially France. I didn’t like Germany that much at first, but the more I hear it the more I like it, is growing on me. And UK and Spain, I’m glad they’re taking the contest more seriously this year, I think they have the strongest songs from these auto qualifiers, who knows? Maybe one of them… Read more »
The Big 5 (or 6) are usually among my favourites; Amandine Bourgeois and Robin Stjernberg were my favourites last year, and Raphael Gualazzi for Italy in 2011. This year however I’m disappointed in them. Germany, I suppose if I had to choose one.
Molly for the win. Power to the PEOPLE!
Big 5(6) songs have never been this good. My votes go to Denmark and Italy 😉
