Tamar Kaprelian‘s Eurovision 2016 collaboration, “The Otherside”, has finally been released, bringing together the voices of Tamar, fellow Genealogy member Stephanie Topalian, Elina Born of Estonia, Elhaida Dani of Albania and Maria Elena Kyriakou of Greece. The five ESC singers are united in song and the result is magic, y’all.
Tamar first announced news of her ambitious project last month in Vienna, exclusively revealing to wiwibloggs what had led to her forming a supergroup of the stars of Eurovision 2015 to cover her ballad “The Otherside”. Tamar told us that the collaboration had started when she and Elhaida started chatting on social media, which led to Maria Elena and Elina coming on board, along with Stephanie from Genealogy.
The result is a sweet, emotional ballad. Tamar told us that the song is about survival, specifically about her experience in the music business. But she explained, “The beauty of music is that songs have many meanings—they can be interpreted multiple ways.”
Tamar and her four collaborators each add their own texture to the song, and remind us why these five young divas were among Team Wiwi’s favourite singers in Vienna.
Lyrics – “The Otherside” by Tamar Kaprelian, Elina Born, Elhaida Dani, Maria-Elena Kyriakou and Stephanie Topalian
Tamar:
Thirty heartbeats from the rain
You’re a poet with a stranger’s name
Cause you woke up with a shattered heart
And the pieces are hard to find
In this wasted town
Where they’ve broken you down
And poisoned you with words
Under painted lies
That you’ve memorized
It’s a story that no one’s heard
Maria Elena:
What’s wrong with this world we live in?
Where the good and bad collide
When did you stop believing, in a better life?
How many dreams unanswered
Before we get it right?
What if it’s all forgiven
When you reach the other side?
Elina:
A traveler on these streets of gold
You never meant to sell your soul
But you find yourself rearranged
Like a prophet going blind
Tired of saving yourself
When there’s no one to help
And you’re fighting with both hands tied
And you’re ready to go
In your heart cause you know
No one cares if you live or die
Elhaida:
What’s wrong with this world we live in?
Where the good and bad collide
When did you stop believing in a better life?
How many dreams unanswered
Before we get it right?
What if it’s all forgiven
When you reach the other side?
Stephanie:
You can swallow your pride but the river is wide
It returns you to where you have been.
Back to sand on the shore back to heaven and war
You’re searching for where to begin.
What’s wrong with this world we live in?
Why am I here inside?
When did you stop believing?
Various:
What’s wrong with this world we live in?
Where the good and bad collide
When did you stop believing, in a better life?
How many dreams unanswered
Before we get this right?
What if it’s all forgiven
When you reach the other side
My favorite is Elina !!!
Oh lovely song & video clip <3
I rather enjoyed it <3
Amazing voices gathered together..
Bravo…These girls did a really good job.. <3 🙂
meh
I’m not really believing the “we ran out of time” thing for Mary Jean’s vocals…
Boring, but maybe I expected more from the song.
@Sal: Tamar said she ran out of time and didn’t get to record MJ’s vocals
Must say I didn’t really care for any of their songs at ESC (with the exception of Elina’s) but this sounded decent for an all-female collab (which I typically don’t enjoy bc. it seems like they are almost always trying to outsing each other). Honestly though, I would love to see the men of this year’s Eurovision counter with a supergroup of their own. Preferably one with Måns Zelmerlöw, Guy Sebastian, Il Volo, and Loic. :p
what happened to Mary-Jean?
Love the project. This reminds of when Armenia, Israel and Serbia collaborated in 2009.
Finally, Armenia made a meaningful contribution to this year’s contest!
Seriously though, it sounds great. I agree with Huh somewhat, a lot of similar sounding voices on the recording though I did think Tamar stood out.
Very nice lyrics too.
@Huh Apparently MJ was unavailable at the time when they had to re-record the clip so unfortunately we only got 5 divas instead of 6 :/
Tamar and Elina sounded alike as well as Maria Elena and Elhaida. You cannot tell their voices apart at first. Well done. But I thought Mary Jean also contributed here. Did she help compose or arrange the lyrics and flow of sound perhaps?
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLE! <3
They are all so flawless <3
