Justs Agnese Zelta Mikrofons latvia awards

The Oscars weren’t the only awards show on this week: there was the glitz and glamour of Latvia’s Zelta Mikrofons (Golden Microphone) awards on February 28. It was a good night to be a former — or future — Eurovision act too. A whole host of them walked away with the microphone statues for their body of work in 2016.

Amongst the winners was Latvia’s 2016 representative Justs, who won the award for Best Debut with Heartbeat. Fittingly, it was Aminata Savadogo herself — the song’s writer — who presented Justs with his trophy. Aminata also performed at the show, a snippet of which you can see below:

From 2016 to 2017, Triana Park’s Agnese Rakovska also picked up an award for Best Video. This wasn’t for her work with the band, however, but her own solo work. We can totally see why she won with the video for “Vienaldzibas” too: this is seriously arty stuff!

Perhaps the night’s biggest winners, however, were Brainstorm and Musiqq. The two former ESC groups’ collaboration, “Debesis iekrita Tevi”, received three awards throughout the night.

In no particular order, the track won Best Song, Radio Hit and Song of the Year. Also: no, we don’t know why “Best Song” and “Song of the Year” are different, y’all.

A host of Supernova national finalists were also nominated for awards, including 2017 finalists My Radiant You. A big congratulations to all of the winners and nominees — will we see “Line” in any of these categories next year?

Y’all should write an article about Justs’ new single he performed at the Supernova final, it’s called “Message to You”. Here are some of the lyrics:

“You followed me on Instagram
I didn’t follow you back
But I was checking you out”

I’m still cackling at that mess, not even Jacob Sartorious would dare to release something like that lmaooo
