One of them won Eurovision in 2008. The other won the televote at Eurovision 2016.

And on Friday evening Russia’s Dima Bilan and Sergey Lazarev proved that they definitely make a winning team as they unveiled their new duet “Prosti menya” (Forgive Me) at the Muz-TV Awards in Moscow.

A mid-tempo pop ballad with a nostalgic feel, “Prosti menya” sees the singers pleading for a lover’s forgiveness. It drips with pain and regret — not to mention a quietly powerful melody. “Well, make me pretend for a moment that I’m yours,” they sing. “How can I believe again, in these subtle worlds?”

On paper it’s an average pop song. But Sergey and Dima — two of Russia’s biggest stars — really know how to sell it. They’ve clearly felt pain and aren’t afraid to show it. Their voices blend well and, during the Moscow debut, they created a properly stirring atmosphere.

Sergey Lazarev and Dima Bilan — “Prosti menya” live at Muz-TV Awards

“Prosti menya” is the song Russian fans have been waiting for for years. Dima and Sergey have built massive solo careers, and for them to perform together has sent fans to pop heaven.

Naturally the reactions have been overwhelming. At the Muz-TV Awards, the audience greeted Sergey and Dima with enthusiastic applause and plenty of screaming as the two performed in front of a thunder-and-lightning backdrop.

In just one day, the single went straight to No. 1 on the Russian iTunes chart, pushing past global chart-toppers “2U” from David Guetta and “Despacito” from Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

Fans weren’t the only ones excited. After the performance Dima posted a picture of the pair performing, along with the following caption.

“It was so nice and fun to work with you! You are a great professional and an example of how you should treat music, and more generally, your business! Thank you — a pleasure working with people like you. Not the last time.”

Sergey later re-posted the photo, writing: “Dear, Dima! Thanks, this is mutual! It was exciting and interesting! And we’ll light it up!”

Sergey Lazarev and Dima Bilan — “Prosti menya” lyrics

Original lyrics

Vdokh, vdol’ potoka slov
Mozhet promolchat’, khotya
Net, nichego smeley etikh sinikh glaz v menya
Ty menya ne prostish’ i ya ne proshchu
V sekundy ne stalo nas
Skvoz’ tolshchu vody ya tikho ko dnu
V pustotu, v tishinu
I net somneniy

Prosti moya lyubov’, kusaya guby v krov’
Ya sdelal vso, chto mozhno, vso chto nel’zya

Prosti lyubov’ moya, vso dal’she polyusa
Ves’ mir na chasti i unosit voda

Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – slyshish’?
Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – moya lyubov’
Prosti menya v posledniy raz
I v unison dyshim
Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – moya lyubov’

Nu zastav’ menya pritvoritsya na mig tvoim
Kak mne poverit’ vnov’, v eti tonkiye miry
Tak posledniye kapli zhadnykh sekund
Glotayu, kak vozdukh zlyye slova
Bezstrastno priznayut nashu vinu, a posle mir zastynet uzhe navsegda

Prosti moya lyubov’, kusaya guby v krov’
Ya sdelal vso, chto mozhno, vso chto nel’zya
Prosti lyubov’ moya, vso dal’she polyusa
Ves’ mir na chasti i unosit voda

Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – slyshish’?
Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – moya lyubov’
Prosti menya v posledniy raz
I v unison dyshim.
Prosti menya, prosti menya
Prosti menya – moya lyubov’

Prosti moya lyubov’, kusaya guby v krov’
Ya sdelal vso, chto mozhno, vso chto nel’zya

Prosti lyubov’ moya, vso dal’she polyusa.
Ves’ mir na chasti i unosit voda

English translation

Breathe, along the stream of words
Can remain silent, till
No, do not flash those blue eyes at me
You do not forgive me and I do not forgive
In seconds, we were no more
Through the thickness of the water, I quiet down
In emptiness, in silence
And there is no doubt

Forgive me my love for biting my lips in blood
I’ve done everything I can, everything I cannot

Forgive my love, all the way to the pole
The whole world takes away the water

Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me – do you hear?
Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me, my love
Forgive me for the last time
And in unison breathe
Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me, my love

Well, make me pretend for a moment that I’m yours
How can I believe again, in these subtle worlds?
So the drops last for greedy seconds
I swallow the air as angry words
Disappointingly admit our guilt,
and afterward the world will be frozen forever

Forgive my love for biting my lips in blood
I’ve done everything I can, everything I cannot
Forgive my love, all the way to the pole
The whole world takes away the water

Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me – do you hear?
Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me, my love
Forgive me for the last time
And in unison breathe
Forgive me, forgive me
Forgive me, my love.

Forgive me my love for biting my lips in blood
I’ve done everything I can, everything I cannot

Forgive my love, all the way to the pole
The whole world takes away the water

Why Russia doesn’t have televote? San Marino and Russia, the smallest and the biggest countries in Eurovision, don’t have televote.

If Ukraine had the longest red carpet, Russia created the longest stage, lol.
Actually, I’m curious what Russia would do if they win esc again.
Probably a long stage with 3 acts in the same time (2 preparing, while 1 is broadcasted).

Just calm down and see what Rusia will do if it ever happenns. Btw do you remember ESC 2009? Do you understand that the place is the same?
Definitely not. It’s variable and there is enough of other options.

if they represent russia in Eurovision (with a much better song than this one) they will definitely win.

They both have already represented Russia at Eurovision and they both have won the televote. Dima became the Winner and Sergey… It was some years later, so happenned. His 3rd place – it just so politically happend=)

I don’t think it’s THAT political Lazarev’s 3rd place. For sure some people avoided voting for Russia, but the song wasn’t really good. However, I think it’s much better than “Believe” and I wouldn’t be mad if Russia had won last year.
I think “A Million Voices” was much more winner material tbh.

To be more exact not some people but half of the juries avoided voting for Russia to prevent it from winning. For us Sergey is the winner.

Almost as many juries didn’t vote (which only means the sing didn’t make it into their top-10) for Ukraine either

the song could have been a lot better if Dima had participated in writing but the most important thing is that two of the most famous Russian artists have collaborated and that;s a huge step forward <3 bravo guys!

I like how you put it in words William:”has sent to pop heaven”))) it really did. The fact of them singing together is a hit itself, but Wow it worked so well!!! Didn’t expect them to sound so beautifully together. So,it’s not unforgivable,it’s unforgettable)) I’m hoping to see more amazing works of this dynamic duo)) also known as “rivals”))
