It’s the Nordic nation who has struggled at Eurovision in recent years, but is well on the way to organising its 2018 national final. Denmark‘s broadcaster DR has confirmed that the grand final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018 will be held in the northern town of Aalborg, at the splendidly named Gigantium.

The Gigantium has a 8,500-person capacity and has hosted DMGP six times before, including 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2015. The best result from recent years was 2010, when Chanée & N’evergreen’s song “In a Moment Like This” placed fourth. This was the start of the Danish renaissance, which led to Emmelie de Forest’s win in 2013.

Aalborg was also one of the countries vying to host Eurovision in 2014, however it withdrew from the running as it did not have enough hotels to accomodate the event.

Annette Heick and Johannes Nymark are back

Miss Kiss Kiss Bang! Annette and Johannes have great chemistry

The hosts of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018 have also been confirmed. Annette Heick and former Lighthouse X front man Johannes Nymark will return to their presenting roles.

Annette has been hosting DGMP since 2016, while Johannes made his debut earlier this year.

In a video on social media, Johannes promised that the pair would do “something that is at least just as awesome” as their popular medley from DGMP 2017.

Annette promised that she’d put on her tap shoes and had “begun training with golden hot pants at home.” We can’t wait to see the fruits of their labours!

DMGP changes for 2018

DR is serious about improving their fortune at Eurovision and are making some changes for 2018. Last month, DR’s Head of Entertainment, Jan Lagermand Lundme revealed that the broadcaster would now be accepting song submissions all year long.

Former producer the Cutfather has left and has been replaced with Mads Enggaard, who will take on the position of DMGP Contributions Producer.

He has spoken of the importance of looking at the whole package — the combination of songs, artists and presentation.

While Denmark won Eurovision 2013, their fortunes in subsequent years haven’t been as strong. Anti Social Media and Lighthouse X both failed to qualify in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Earlier this year, Danish-Australian diva Anja Nissen made it to the grand final with her power anthem “Where I Am”, however that only placed 20th.

DR will be hoping that their revamped Dansk Melodi Grand Prix ensures the perfect act is selected on February 10 at the Gigantium early next year.

What do you think? Can the improved DGMP get Denmark back in to the Eurovision top ten? What would you like Johannes and Annette do at the grand final? Sound off below!

Looks like its Herning and Aalborg every second year. Somewhere else would be nice for a change.

I hope DR will up their game a bit and choose some better and more diverse songs, instead of selecting ten pieces of empty machine pop with the same four chords over and over again. There’s a lot more than that in the Danish music scene. It doesn’t have to be the most pop’ish of the pop’ish all the time.

I know right? It feels like ever since 1999 they’ve been sending the same three songs. I can’t even tell apart most of their entries.

Cute plan. I hope they have good songs as well, something they’ve been struggling to deliver.

They always have good songs in their 10 song line up, the problem is they never choose them.

2015- suitcase
2016- heart shaped hole
2017- the one

Suitcase was cute, Crap Shaped Hole and One were flops and obvious non-qualifiers.

Heart shaped hole would have qualified through Jury but wouldn’t have done well in Televote

One would have done moderately well with televotes(maybe Top 15 in Final ) but the jury vote would have been average……it would have done better than Anja in the GF but it might have not reached it in the first place as a Top 6 in Semi televote wasn’t enough in Semi-2 to reach GF

I just hope that good old Denmark will get back on track and select a couple of decent songs for DMGP. Their last three national selections were quite dire…

DGMP is too idiotically guarded for some reason!! They don’t allow viewers from other countries to watch and don’t even publish the videos on YouTube later. And make the overwhelming public favourite lose with their weird method of voting in the Superfinal. They need to make changes to these aspects rather than what they have done.

How is The superfinal vote weird? Everyone votes again.

No one knows how that voting really works… some say it’s 100% televote, others say it’s 50% jury/50% televote.

It is a 50% jury and 50% televote

This year the 50% jury vote was such that each juror had to give their entire 10% to one of the superfinalists essentially making the televote worthless if 4/5 of the jury vote for the same Act !!

Previously they had a 100% televote in Superfinal too.

It’s exciting to hear that plans are underway for DMGP 2018! I think it’s great that Annette Heick and Johannes Nymark are hosting again, it makes the contest more familiar and somewhat ‘intimate’ that there is regularity with who we see on screen. Apart from a fantastic winner and willing representative for Denmark to go to Lisbon, I’m hoping for a new stage design as I noticed DMGP 2017 reused the stage from 2016. I know the Danes are famous for being environmentally friendly and that reusing is all part of this green movement, but it’s super exciting to see… Read more »
