After three heats, two semi-finals and two voting rounds in the grand final, at last Hungary has decided. Post-hardcore band AWS has won A Dal 2018 and will perform their song “Viszlát nyár” at Eurovision 2018.

AWS is a five-piece post-hardcore band from Budakeszi. They have been performing for 12 years and have released three albums. Their song “Viszlát nyár” means “Goodbye summer”.

The grand final was made up of two parts. First the eight all-male finalists performed their songs in front of an expert jury made up of actress Judit Schell, Magna Cum Laude lead singer Misi Mezo, award-winning musician Miklós Both and the music legend Károly Frenreisz.

The jury voted and from their votes alone the top four acts then progressed to the super final. The four super finalists were: Gergely Dánielfy with “Azt mondtad”, Viktor Király with “Budapest Girl”, yesyes and “I Let You Run Away” and AWS with “Viszlát nyár”.

Fan favourite Tamas Horvath didn’t make it out of this round. His song “Meggyfa” was not a hit with the jury. No jury member awarded it points, ensuring that the song did not have any chance of making it to the super final.

These four acts then faced a second round of voting, determined entirely by the public vote. From that, the people of Hungary decided they wanted AWS to be their act in Lisbon.

The Wiwi Jury was also in agreement with the people of Hungary. AWS topped the Hungary Wiwi Jury, with an average score of 7.5/10. Jury member Barnabas was enthused, saying “This. Is. What. Hungary. Needs. For. Eurovision. And let’s get it straight: while some acts manage to set the stage on fire, these guys NUKED it!”

Wiwibloggs readers picked AWS as their third favourite in the recent Wiwi Poll. AWS picked up 20.32% of the vote, while yesyes was top with 32.57% of the vote and Tamás Horváth was second with 23.52%.

A Dal 2018 – first round results

  1. Gergely Dánielfy – “Azt mondtad” (36 points)
  2. Viktor Király – “Budapest Girl” (30 points)
  3. yesyes – “I Let You Run Away” (28 points)
  4. AWS  – “Viszlát nyár” (8 points)
  5. Leander Kills – “Nem szól harang” (6 points)
  6. Gábor Heincz Biga – “Good Vibez” (4 points)
  7. Tamás Horváth – “Meggyfa” (0 points)
  8. Zsolt Süle – “Zöld a május”(0 points)

What do you think? Is this song a good choice for Hungary at Eurovision? Will they keep their qualification record? Hav your say below!

I’ve had this as as safe third after Leander Kills and Meggyfa. Anyways they do their fire on stage.
Stage-murdered Levegot! is still in my heart though.

As a hungarian, this is a very dissapointing result for me. I can’t get related to this act at all, but this is my personal opinion.
My prediction for Lisbon is the jury will most likely punish this entry with low points. As for the televoting, it is a complete dark horse, can really place anywhere between first and last.

My heart is still pumping with this emotional heavy metal tune sung in native language. If you just spend a little bit of your time understanding the nature of those lyrics, you wouldn’t be that surprised with his interpretation. Holy cow, i’m so over the moon. From the deep of my heart, thank you Hungary for bringing edginess and authenticity.
I reckon Eurovision’s bubble is in a total meltdown right now. 😀

Waw that song really needs english version , in current form i doubt it will make it from the semi but translated this have alot of potential to beat 90% of the generic pop trash that will drawn us with this year.

I am actually really happy this won! Congrats, guys, what a beautiful song! Currently on my 6th spot and maybe going up later on. LOVE IT! I know, Gergely was my favorite (and I still LOVE that song), but AWS are a very close second, and we need great rock songs too!

I love rock music in Eurovision and this is a decent song. I wish them a good luck.

Buuut…. Giving zero points to Meggyfa was just crime.

Stop saying a sea of ballads! Where the hell do you see a sea of ballads selected this year so far?

Colin
Guest
Colin

People are so afraid of ballads that they see them everywhere. I love a good ballad, so why not having them, just like any other genre.

But to explain, not every emotional song is a ballad. Also, not every slow tempo song is a ballad.

Ballads thus far are from Spain, Montenegro, Belarus and Germany. That’s only 4 out of 19. (If you really want to put France into that category, okay, but I don’t think it is a ballad.) Tonight, no ballad won.

“Sea of ballads” gimmick is brought up every time some wack song that somehow can be described as “not an eurovision format” won country’s selection to justify it’s numerous flaws.

It’s not my cup of tea but a part of me enjoys fantasizing about this winning.

I like the concept but like Slovakia 2012 and Ukraine 2017, I don’t think this will translate very well with the live audience and juries when it comes to the contest.

That key change is not going to help either. I would wager this is a definite non qualifier.

I don’t think it’s terrible, I think within the context of Eurovision, this won’t work and the juries won’t like, I’m not an expert on metal, I dunno if it’s meant to go anywhere like a pop song or a ballad for example, but this doesn’t and ultimately that’s going to work against them. If they can use the stage in an interesting way, and give it a more expensive feel, it may work

Sometimes rock fans are going the way rock haters go. I mean, I hate when somebody comes and say about a brilliant rock song that is bad because he’s hating rock. But I also don’t like the excitement some rock fans are having just when they hear a rock rythm. I am a rock fan and would love to see more rock entries in Eurovision, but this one is certainly not the type of song I could say it has quality.

Well it is more Metal then rock! There have been quite a few ESC rock entries i haven’t liked due to being bang average/boring but i love this one! Possibly on a Lordi level for me if they smash their performance

Well, at least it is something different..
I can’t imagine it reaching top 10, it’s to different. And I really don’t think it should either. It is just noise and shouting. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hungary misses to qualify for the first time since 2009..

Actually, I can imagine this qualifying clean and easy. The 2nd half of the 2nd semi is being filled with very mellow and soft songs one after the other without a lot of impact. AWS will arrive and obliterate every other memory from that half once they start performing.

Very true Denis. Now that i think of it, it’s about time Hungary gives its spot to more deserving countries. The man was out of tune! Screaming isnt singing.

I think I have the majority’s opinion about Hungarian winner, even though I am a rock lover, this one is not truly convincing. Still happy to have something like that in Eurovision, but I think that this year Hungary will not reach the final.

He can’t sing, why is no one mentioning this (i’m not talking about the screamo parts….). Does he get a pass because it’s metal? If this was a pop song everyone would be losing their minds and saying she couldnt sing. give me a break.

what is the parameter of who’s can sing? everyone can sing it’s either it’s you, me or everyone else but the question is “are your voice (or music) is entertaining enough?”. Not every genre of music need to appeal for everyone but in this case the majority of voters has decide that AWS is the winner. Your allegory is quite silly seems it’s like asking will Sam Smith famous if he sang Reggae? you need to take a break for contemplating

Please change staging, the fireworks did not fit. It looked force, dont use fireworks like Lordi did…secondly; many other things must be improved(e.g his vocals, the staging), i think it’s nice but it did not convince me to vote for it..i feel like other people will think the same. Staging is the key so it does not look and sound like a parody band! good luck hungarians

I couldn’t care less if they don’t even qualify this year. I’m a very proud Eurovision fan, and an even prouder Hungarian tonight. Everything this year was total garbage, either mainstream or boring/fake (with the exception of yesyes, I liked them too). This song has serious feelings behind it, and I can feel it all listening to it. Haven’t experienced energy like this on ESC stage in a very long time. AWS just did what they always do, not trying to fit mainstream Eurovision standards and I’m glad they will represent my country in 2018.

Ok, before I go on, I want to make clear that I have listened to Rock/Hard Rock/Metal, you name it, all of my life and it’s my favourite music genre ever. When I read that a metal band had won Hungary’s NF I was ecstatic and maybe I had high expectations to begin with given my love for the genre. I want to love this song so much, but unfortunately I don’t and I can’t 🙁 It’s too flat for me and the main vocalist’s vocals aren’t that strong enough. That’s a pity! Someone said on the comments that this is “hard rock for Eurovision” and I guess it makes sense. If some people are already turning up their noses to the song just because it’s rock, imagine if it was heavier and/or experimental. I showed to a friend that likes metal and he said very similar things to what you’ve said. Anyway, I think it’s nice to have a rock band there. Maybe if it gets a good result, more rock bands will be interested on doing that.

Purple Mask

Yes, I suggested that it was metal for Eurovision. I also think some metal fans are being way too precious about their “genre”. The point of Eurovision (whether I like it or not) is to enjoy and respect diversity of music, as people have recently reminded me. So where is the respect from some metal fans? The band won a national final; that’s a good thing I hope.

Sabrina
Guest
Sabrina

Well, I have my share of metal lover friends and I can see that they can be very protective about the genre. Sometimes, this makes them trash bands that they consider it’s too soft (even if for the regular listener, they sound quite heavy). But there’s the problem that rock bands would normally never think about trying a spot on Eurovision. I think it’s bold for AWS to try that and for Hungary to pick them.

Lordi and terasbetoni (finnish entries) were metal for eurovision. Hungary is different i think, AWS is a post- hard core band, according to wikipedia. I did some research. Curious to hear some interviews and if they will change staging, the fireworks did not fit.

Rock is my favorite genre even if hard rock isn’t my thing. I don’t even know how to describe it. Metal? Post-metal? Hardcore? Emocore? Who cares? I actually like this one. Variety is always welcome on Eurovision and I was hoping that Hungary would pick one of their rock bands, because this would possibly the only chance we would have to see the genre represented in Lisbon. Gergely and yesyes would be great too. If I would pick just by personal taste, it will be one of them. But I wanted a rock song for the mentioned reasons and I’m… Read more »

Why not let musicians be musicians? AWS don’t represent a “genre” at all. They are just one band. If you don’t like them, don’t buy their records and don’t listen to them. Simple as.
