Entries for Estonia‘s national final closed last night and broadcaster ERR has now confirmed details of the 2019 edition. ERR has revealed that the Eesti Laul semi-finals will be held in the city of Tartu, and they’ve set viewers a puzzle. Instead of giving an exact figure of entries received, ERR is making viewers get busy with their calculators.
New for 2019, the two semi-finals of Eesti Laul will held in Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city. The semis will be held within days of each other, on January 31 and February 2. The shows will be hosted at the newly opened sports facility of the University of Tartu.
As confirmed earlier, the grand final of Eesti Laul 2019 will be again held at the Saku Suurhall in Tallinn. The grand final will take place on February 16, two weeks after the second semi-final. Tickets for both the semi-finals and grand final will go on sale tomorrow, Thursday 8 November.
One week ago, ERR revealed that only 24 entries had been received for Eesti Laul 2019. But organisers weren’t too worried and now it appears that plenty of songwriters got their entries in on time.
While Eesti Laul entries are now made via an online platform, the show’s new producer Tomi Rahula confirmed that in finest tradition, there was a rush of entries being uploaded at the last minute. He told Kroonika, “The last hour was very active, and the server was shut down for ten minutes.” However, the problem was sorted and all entrants were able to upload their songs.
How many entries were received?
The broadcaster is not yet saying exactly how many entries were received.
ERR has, however, revealed that 8100 euros was received in total entry fees. The fee for a song with Estonian lyrics was 25 euros, while a song written in any other language was 50 euros.
The broadcaster has invited viewers to get thinking and try to figure out how many entries were received. The correct answer will be revealed this evening on the television programme Ringvaade. One lucky viewer who correctly guesses will win tickets to Eesti Laul.
The answer will lie somewhere between 162 entries (if they were all non-Estonian) and 324 (if they were all Estonian). The key to the answer is estimating what percentage of entries will be in Estonian. In Eesti Laul last year, 35% of competing songs were in Estonian — but does this also represent the percentage of Estonian songs that entered?
We’re generously guessing around 200 entries, down from the 258 received last year.
However many songs have been entered, they will now be assessed by the expert jury. The selected competing acts will be announced on November 15 on Ringvaade. The full songs will be released no later than December 4.

I’ll guess that two-thirds (66.6…%) will be of non-Estonian entries, which makes up 128 entries. So the other one-third will be Estonian entries (33.3…%), which makes up 64 entries. This may make sense as last year the Estonian songs made up 35% of entries, however with such a large amount of entries being submitted near the deadline, I presume some more foreigners will be grabbing the opportunity to enter a national final.
So in total there will be 192 entries.
As long as kerli joins eesti laul again and wins!

Tartu is Estonia’s holiest city as it’s Laura’s hometown.
They must have had some serious faith issues in the Mays of 2005 and 2017.
Eesti Laul producer Tomi Rahula said this morning that they received songs in 5 languages. The host of the morning show guessed that they were in estonian, russian, english, spanish and german and Tomi said: correct! did you enter all these songs?
He also mentioned, that songs were submitted from many previous Eesti Laul / Eurolaul winners.
So no Italian operatic song?
