The first semi-final of Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2019 is just around the corner. This Saturday, RTP’s studios will welcome the first eight songs that will fight for the honour of representing the Iberian nation in Tel Aviv. Only four acts will advance to Portimão Arena‘s grand final.

We asked you to vote for the acts you would like to see advance to the final. With a total of 3,706 votes, the results are in and you were very clear on who should qualify this weekend.

With a demolishing 40%, Conan Osíris with “Telemóveis” is your favourite to win the semi-final. The outré performer, with his unique and experimental music style, recorded 1,488 votes — almost double that of the act that came second.

The song is also making waves in Portugal. The online chat with Eurovision and non-Eurovision followers after its release made the song trend at No.1 in YouTube Portugal. The lyric video has clocked up almost 1.5 million views on the platform. It’s a phenomenon that brands like Vodafone and FNAC haven’t ignored, making adverts that use the song’s cellphone metaphor.

Pop duo Calema come in second place with 21% of the vote. With their already established fan base, it wasn’t a surprise to see “A Dois” trend in YouTube as well. The radio-friendly track doesn’t diverge from what Calema usually release and it will for sure be a hit once Festival da Canção is finished.

Filipe Keil, the newcomer that won the open submissions competition, comes in at number three. The feel-good pop track clocked up 12% of the votes. This doesn’t come as a surprise, since “Hoje” is one of the most accessible tracks for mainstream listeners.

According to you, the last ticket to the final should be given to Matay‘s orchestral ballad “Perfeito“. The power vocalist got 11% of the votes and is making waves with more traditional Festival da Canção and Eurovision followers. His voice and the quality of the track are undeniable. But can it have a Salvador effect at Eurovision?

Poll results: Who should qualify from Festival da Canção 2019 semi final 1?

  1. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis” – 40% (1,488 votes)
  2. Calema – “A Dois” – 21% (775 votes)
  3. Filipe Keil – “Hoje” – 12% (428 votes)
  4. Matay – “Perfeito” – 11% (412 votes)
  5. Ana Cláudia – “Inércia” – 6% (240 votes)
  6. João Campos – “É o que é” – 5% (187 votes)
  7. Ela Limão – “Mais brilhante que mil sóis” – 3% (101 votes)
  8. Soraia Tavares – “O meu sonho” – 2% (75 votes)

Last year, Cláudia Pascoal won the Festival da Canção wiwibloggs poll with more than 40%. Are you confident the poll will reflect Saturday’s results? Tell us in the comment section below!

My three favourites are in this semifinal, and I don’t like it. Conan and Calema will qualify for sure, and I hope Matay will.

Yess I absolutely love his song, and really rooting for him, and hope the Portuguese public send him through to the finals so he can go to Tel aviv, good luck Conan.

Conan will qualify. I am not so sure about the final unfortunely…

I am worried with the awful jury votes. The portuguese juries are worse than usual always voting for oldfashioned songs. I am curious to see what they will think of Telemoveis”. As i said here before, there are a few good songs but Conan really stands out and i hope he wins.

But if it was for the public Salvador Sobral would not win. It was the jury’s vote that made him win. So I do not understand how people question the jury so much. I am a lot more worried with public vote. There are a lot of prejudice from public opinions regarding Conan. I trust the jury will be more fair regarding music quality. Julio Isidro was one of the few that supported Antonio Variações when everybody was judging him just because he was different.

I won’t say Salvador Sobral was current, to be fair. “Amar Pelos Dois” was rather old-fashioned, so I don’t think it is a good example. I think Conan will go far, but maybe Calema get stuck. I don’t see the Portuguese jury rooting for them. Hope I’m wrong I want Conan, Calema and Felipe in Festival da Cançao top places.

So… The jury placed Conan 4th and the public put him through in 1st place. My predictions were right unfortunely….
The disney song “Perfeito” becomes the dark horse in the competition and i am not happy about it.

Conan is by far my favorite. I am addicted to Telemóveis and can’t wait for Saturday and then the final. The genious of this song, is that it indeed has many different elements rarely heard in ESC, but at the same time the structure of the song is actually very classic Eurovision with its suspending start, it’s middle sections and a key change. It manages to be a ballad and a bop at the same time… But I am bit nervous about the actual outcome. We still don’t know who will be part of the jury and Calema has a… Read more »

This is good to know as Vodafone radio reaches potentially a big chunk of the population. I knew his work, but tbh I’ve paid more attention to it more recentely. He is outstanding and I am super curious what we will come up with next.

This tends to be a very good semifinal. The 5 best ranked on the pool all deserve some praise, for different reasons. But there’s nothing like “Telemóveis” on this Eurovision season. It’s so bold and different, that I’m gladly surprised it’s gettin that much support from eurofans.

Conan understands the 21st century, he’s one of those people that are like a cultural garbage bin, he likes so many stuff and doesn’t ignore the “bad cheesy” pop culture, he uses it to mask important subjects in his lyrics and pretend it’s just a funny song. That’s why so many people who are plain dumb or lazy can’t figure him out and say he’s trashy, they can’t see through the kitsch surface. Oh, Ialmost forgot about the prejudiced people who dismiss his songs either because it has funky beats or because he looks kind of gypsy or because he… Read more »

Some open-minded people like the freshness of it even if they are less educated but yes, I suppose you need to have appreciation for a” challenging piece of information”, not just want to be entertained.

I believe we, the locals, are appreciating the song alright. It’s still in the youtube trends here in Portugal, three weeks after it has been released. You can’t say that for any other song in FdC.

L'oiseau

The locals are relating to it, because the lyrics are actually very simple but surprising at the same time. Whether Eurovision at large will relate it, that is another matter, and there I think you might have a point.

Telemoveis works for me, I can feel saudade (well there’s actually saudade mentioned in the lyrics), although I’m not Portuguese enough to say so; I’m afraid all these dark vibes and hauntingly beatiful melody might be jeopardized by some unnecessary gimmicks on stage (this girl from Finnish selection few years ago?), besides, as much as I adore Portuguese fado and this melancholic stuff, I’m not sure if other people (I mean the audience) feel it as well. Hope we gonna see him in Tel Aviv, though. 🙂

if all countries selected basic pop songs to please the juries we would have no diversity. we need some countries (usually the same ones – italy, portugal, hungary, balkans) to bring diversity n risky songs

Ana Claudia is my favourite with the uplifting emotional ambient trip hop number “Inércia” as haunting and original “Telemoveis” sounds I just get the feeling it’ll be let down by empty staging and possibly get shafted by regional juries despite winning televote. A lot of good songs in Portugal this year! Festival da Canção has glowed up so much from last year and I guess “O Jardim” has made a bigger impact than “Amar pelos dois”

Not at all. “Amar Pelos Dois” will always be a beloved masterpiece, while “O Jardim” was just a simple song that didn’t manage to get any impact on people.

Well uptill now it seems like this year will be a battle amongst the guys we have sergey vs mahmood vs conan (maybe) and we can possibly add Kobi, eliot and Duncan to this list depending on the quality of their songs.
Also off topic: Ilse deLange has confirmed she will travel along with Duncan to Tel Aviv. There’s a great chance she is one of the songwriters of his song.

This year I’m all about that #Soldi and #Telele. Conan is exactly what we need, I could listen to Telemoveis for hours bc it’s so haunting. If staged well, this could be THE moment at Eurovision. Of course it’s not the only good song at Festival de cancao, but it’s the only one that could actually win Eurovision. There, I said it! Let’s head to Portugal again next year, why not?
