The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has travelled to Denmark to review the songs competing in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019. Our next Eurovision hopeful is Simone Emilie with the song “Anywhere”. Is this going anywhere? Read on to find out.

Antranig: I like “Anywhere” but it feels like it was written 15 years ago and has been gathering dust on a shelf. Someone picked it up and thought it might be a good song to make up the numbers at DMGP. Simone Emilie delivers the song in a captivating manner but it’s not a compelling entry, with lazy repetitive lyrics. She could’ve taken me “Anywhere” but I felt the song went nowhere.

Jordi: Charming at its finest, Simone’s “Anywhere” is sweet yet memorable. The production in here is truly delightful, driving you vibrantly all three minutes long to a peaceful state of mind. It feels heavenly and the song has an uptempo beat that inputs more modernity into the song. This reminds me of Clean Bandit’s vibrant and straightforward quality. The song needs a revamp to create a stronger moment in the end by adding a stronger beat.

Oliver: A textured unique voice accompanied by a very decent song. This entry is one of the better ones in this year’s DMGP, being a very credible and professional entry. It has a solid build up which gradually adds more and more elements and flares but not so much that it becomes a messy wall of sound. The gentle verses and initial chorus work very well together to help build anticipation and tension before the song builds more. One complaint is that after 90 seconds it does feel a bit repetitive but hopefully some good staging can elevate it a bit more.

Luis: “Anywhere” walks the thin line between a radio-friendly tune and the soundtrack of one of those extremely boring North European romantic tele-films. Simone has a beautiful voice and she manages to create a kind of mystery around her entry during the first minute or so. Sadly, when the heavier electronic production appears, the song starts losing my interest, and the final parts just pass you by without noticing.

Cinan: This selection is one of my favourites. Denmark is producing really good music every year for this selection. The song by Simone is a really good one but I don’t know if it is enough good for the Eurovision stage. Eurovision audiences love to hear songs that have a strong message and make them feel good. I think this song will do good on the radios in Europe and I can’t wait to see the live performance.

The only song at DMGP this year that I think is actually quality. Simone’s voice is tender. The music is bright and refreshing. The lyrics avoid clichés and sound like they were written by someone who actually speaks English natively. (Can’t say that about the lyrics of some of the others…)

Anywhere – Okay, this is pleasant and likable. The verses are promising, but the chorus doesn’t really pull a punch. Even if I think the song is nice, it doesn’t really go ”anywhere” to make a big impact. – 6.5/10
Come. on, unless Denmark picks Sigmund or Teit, there are already worse choices, like Montenegro, Latvia and Croatia. Not to mention that Moldova and Belarus might pick terrible songs. Serbia also has a few atrocious ones, but thankfully, they aren’t leading in any polls. Also, never underestimate the potential of San Marino, but I guess Serhat will at least make it a guilty pleasure.
I like it but it jumps from slow to a bop and I’m just sitting there trying to keep up. Like I’m listening to it right now and she’s just gone from slow to anywhere to slow again. It’s a little hard to keep up with. But I think it has potential if it is sent to Eurovision because it’s a bit of a bop.
I actually quite like this! Think it’s my 3rd favourite. Wouldn’t be a bad choice at all.
Very catchy tune
Underrated. Seriously rich on musical content. Beautiful music, in two beautifully-related keys (F minor, A-Flat major). The development in the Bridges (or Verse extensions) is poignant to the point where it enhances the lyrics at that point – i.e. “too afraid to let you know” and “you went and gave me my first kiss” – the harmony falls to a C major chord there both times. Nice but it wouldn’t do a lot on the ESC stage. Denmark have more interesting choices.
