Wales in Junior Eurovision 2019: Erin Mai “Calon yn Curo (Heart Beating)”

The United Kingdom last participated in Junior Eurovision as a whole in 2005. But with none of its three national EBU-member broadcasters — BBC, ITV and Channel 4 — showing any interest in returning, the Welsh-language station S4C picked up the reigns.

And so Wales made its debut at the 2018 contest. And despite a disappointing last-place finish, its back once more for 2019.

Erin Mai won the second edition of Chwilio am Seren on 24 September. The national selection consisted of an audition round where six acts were selected to participate in the final, with the top three singing their own version of “Calon yn Curo”.

What do the “Calon yn Curo (Heart Beating)” lyrics mean?

The song is composed by Sylvia Strand and Jonathan Gregory, and written by Ed Holden. Strand and Gregory may be familiar to some as they formed part of The Islanders, the six-piece group spearheaded by Jon Lilygreen. They represented Cyprus at Eurovision in 2010 with “Life Looks Better in Spring”.

And with the title translating to “Heart Beating”, it’s evident the songwriters took inspiration from their time in Oslo as the track is all about “Sharing the Moment”!

Speaking to the Junior Eurovision website, Erin says it’s “about the moment before you step onto the stage. The stage can be anything, from the Eurovision stage to a football pitch, to stepping up to those people being nasty to you. Once you get over the nerves and build up the courage, you can achieve anything, and then share that special moment with everyone around you”.
“Heart beating / Soul singing / Voices of the beats build / The audience buzzed slowly / Sharing the Moment is a memorable experience”.

The official video illustrates these sentiments with a colourful festival, where everyone is joyous and partying together. Erin wants to let you know the moment is now, and singing live on stage is an experience for everyone involved, whether singing or spectating.

“Singing from the stage to the lights / Faces smiling open hearts / Emotion overflows in a beat / One aspect of one movement / Stand still / Stand up share the message through the music / Dancing and bouncing everyone sings.”

Welsh text

Calon yn curo, enaid yn canu.
Lleisiau, y curiadau yn adeiladu.
Bwrlwm y gynulleidfa yn arafu.
Rhannu y foment,
Mae’n brofiad cofiadwy.

Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.
Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.

Camu i’r llwyfan, i’r goleuadau.
Gwynebau yn gwenu, agor calonau.
Emosiwn yn gorflifo mewn curiad.
Un agwedd, un symudiad.

Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.
Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.

Sefwch yn dal, sefwch i fyny,
Rhannwch y neges drwy y gerddoriaeth.
Pawb yn gyfartal, does dim gwahaniaeth.

Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.
Rhannu y foment,
Calon yn curo, calon yn curo.

This is underrated. It has a catchy melody and the combination of folk and contemporary elements sounds really good. Also, the song has a great message for performers about focusing on the message you are conveying and the connection you form with the audience. These are important principles for overcoming performance anxiety and avoiding a self-critical mentality.

Credit them for paraphrasing two former ESC slogans in their chorus but no, this is the weakest song this year. Erin attacks the song with a great effort but yeah, there’s nothing else saving this.

I appreciate the effort that at least Wales are sending a song to represent the UK, but it really is pretty weak.
No disrespect to the singer but she has a mountain to climb with this song.

I would rather wales drop out .. only sovereign countries should be taking part .. Wales is a nation not a country . Hopefully the UK come back in the future .. they were successful at junior when they took part

I don’t think this will do well unfortunately. The song is just missing something.

I really hope this doesn’t get last place, but it’s a bit weak imo. Hopefully Erin can give us a powerful performance.
