Last weekend, Nanne Grönvall‘s Melodifestivalen 2020 journey was cut short when her song “Carpool Karaoke” was eliminated in the semi-final. But now the subject of her song — British entertainer James Corden — discovered her performance and paid tribute on his hit US talk show The Late Late Show With James Corden.

James is already a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and patiently gave his American audience a primer in not just Eurovision, but the national selection system and Sweden’s mighty Melodifestivalen.

He introduced the “Carpool Karaoke” performance by describing it as “One of the best songs I have ever heard”. Cut to a clip of Nanne from Saturday’s semi-final, singing about how she’s feeling low and while her friends try to cheer her up, the only thing that works is wanting to sing Carpool Karaoke with James Corden.

The clip was met with big cheers and applause from The Late Late Show audience, who shared James Corden’s newfound enthusiasm for the song.

James Corden praised Nanne’s passion for Carpool Karaoke — the show segment where Corden drives around with celebrities, singing along to their favourite songs. He even shared clips of stars such as Justin Bieber and Britney Spears, looking bored with the experience. The Swedish songstress would never!

The talk show host acknowledged that Nanne had been eliminated from the contest, but he extended an invitation to her. Corden said that if Nanne was ever in Los Angeles or he was in Sweden, he promised to take her for drive to do some Carpool Karaoke.

Nanne responded to the invitation, telling Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, “I will put down my high-heeled shoes and go there!”

She explained that she had an English version of the song ready. Nanne excitedly said, “Think what we could sing together!

Melodifestivalen 2020 continues this weekend with the andra chansen round on Saturday 29 February.

What do you think? Should Nanne Grönvall still be in Melfest 2020? What songs should Nanne sing with James Corden for Carpool Karaoke? Tell us your thoughts below!

USA resident here. I don’t know how this translated to you folks in Europe, but to us he didn’t come across as making fun of the song AT ALL. He seemed genuinely flattered by it. I’ve been playing this clip for all the Eurovision-deprived people I know. They think it’s hilarious, and they LOVE the song. Several people wanted to see the whole performance. This is exactly the type of promotion Eurovision needs in USA – positive, informative, mainstream, and fun. Not that foolishness that Steven Colbert did a few years ago, and CERTAINLY not the constant drumbeat of “oh… Read more »

I think you’ve git it about right there Hoboken Ken. It would be great if he did an actual Carpool Karaoke with her of Eurovision songs from the past, though I doubt if the “Eurovision-deprived” would know the songs chosen.

LOL he threw Hannah Ferm and Victor Crone’s names under the bus for beating Nanne. There goes their chances of ever going to ESC now 😉 jks

tbh Victor and Hannah struggle vocally. When she literally jump up and down in the whole song! And believe me, I didn’t like her song but she was entertaining

I’d like to point out that he probably makes more fun of himself and the segment than anything else. He seems really happy with the song and enjoys Eurovision, and his main swings are about how bored some of his guests looked and the recent thing about how sometimes someone is towing the car.

He should react to the UKs travesty of an entry this year before blaming brexit for shit results, disgusting

I was hoping that My Last Breath would’ve been duet material. James Newman very well might have been paired with Adeline Um.

I really don’t see why people are saying he is mocking. It is not, Corden is not that type of person. He seemed to appreciate it and looked genuinely surprised someone would even make a song about him. Of course it has to be funny since it’s a comedy show but it a nice funny.
Now it would be fun if Nanne actually gets featured on Carpool Karaoke and they sing ESC songs, that’s all PR you need!

Nanne might not have won Melodifestivalen but she’s definitely gaining a new audience.

I was ready to hate James Corden even more because, like the others here, I thought he was mocking her and her song. But I do think in the end he genuinely appreciated Nanne’s song giving tribute to the show. 🙂

Now, Mello: you better have Nanne back on to do a special performance of “Carpool Karaoke” during the finals night!

Nanne made me so happy last Saturday, her song (and her performance!) is the main thing I will remember from this year’s Melodifestivalen

Look here for all the negative people, just to get mentioned on an American talkshow is great PR for ESC, he (i know he is british but still) even explained the countries had their own NFs with a lot of songs, even a little thing like that is great!
Even though many might not care, all PR is good PR no matter what 🙂

All PR is good PR no matter if it is bad or good, just look at the beverage Corona Extra, they have a upswing on their sale…why do you think that is?

Very sweet. She should have at least gone to AC. I thought Nanne was more fun and interesting than Hanna, who is lovely but has a boring, generic song.

He’s making jokes about her performance, while she’s not there. People are laughing at her. If you think he’s trying hard to be nice, I really envy you.

? He’s just really nice. He is not mocking anyone. Nanne has made a novelty act and it’s how it’s supposed to be received.

No, he’s not! He’s just amused someone ever write a song about him. He’s rather mocking himself. It’s brave to sing song about him and his Karaoke cause he’s familiar to someone in US, not in Sweden. And actually he’s not a big star. Who could ever fancy him?
And he promised her Carpool Karaoke.

People and hosts in US actually are not salty like in Europe, you know. They are usually quite polite, positive and make harmless jokes.

Anyway, I’m double happy! Cause I love to watch both ESC and James Corden show! And i’m from UA. 🙂

I liked the way he presented the contest, without mocking it, and giving some factual informations. Even some presenters of talk-shows in Europe should learn from him how to talk about Eurovision.

I don’t care what people say, James Corden seems like a chill guy and it was cool that he took the time to talk about Nanne and this song. Yeah, I groaned audibly when he mentioned his reasoning for the UK getting bad marks (you’ll never believe what he thinks it is! Totally different from what all the other uninformed Brits say!), but other than that a good bit!

Nanne should be invited to Melodifestivalen again. Maybe next year, or even in a couple of years. She brought the most exciting act and performance among veteran participants in the last years. I really expected her to go to Andra Chansen, but I really want to see her back and qualifying to the final!! At least she had fun on stage and will now tour in different countries!!
