Slovenia in Eurovision 2020: Ana Soklič “Voda”
Ana Soklič is a 36-year-old singer from Bohinj. She started her career under the pseudonym Diona Dim, participating in EMA 2004 and 2007 with the songs “If You” and “Oče”. She took part in many festivals before entering the first edition of X Factor Slovenia in 2012, finishing fifth.
In 2019 she participated in Popevka — a long-standing Slovenian music festival — with the song “Temni svet”. She won two awards, one for the best song and one for the best interpretation.
Ana Soklič won EMA 2020 by defeating the Slovenia’s Junior Eurovision 2015 representative Lina Kuduzović. The two singers earned the most votes from a three-member jury composed by former Eurovision singers Maja Keuc, Darja Švajger and Nuša Derenda in the first round of the national final. Ana secured 53.54% of the televotes in the superfinal.
What do the “Voda” lyrics mean?
Ana Soklič has stated in several interviews that “Voda” does not have a single message or theme and is open to the listener’s interpretation. Water, the central word of the song, is used as a universal parable. A multifaceted element of nature characterized by energy, which can suddenly gush out and without which we cannot live.
Water, therefore, takes on a double role, both positive and negative. It is the symbol of all the negative things that happen in the world and that surround us. But at the same time, it represents a safe and purifying place.
In the same way, the song wants to convey that even if beautiful and bad things happen to us in life, the important thing is to have someone on our side, not to fall apart. After each tragedy, we can pick ourselves up and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Energy is within us.

Beautiful song
It ‘s a very beautiful song. I absolutely would have voted for her.
Me too – absolutely underrated !
VODAAAAAAAAA
Stunning song and voice
It’s boring
I think “Voda” is a beautiful song, and Ana has a lovely voice. I was always sad to see it so low on people’s rankings.
I would have voted for it because I like it and for the fact that it’s terribly underrated. And for the ‘words to deeds’ line in the lyrics.
