Iceland at Eurovision 2024: Hera Björk with “Scared of Heights”

Hera Björk Þórhallsdóttir is an Icelandic singer renowned for her captivating performances. She gained international recognition by representing Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with the hit “Je ne sais quoi,” securing a notable 19th place. Additionally, her triumph at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival 2013 in the Best Song category, with the powerful track “Because You Can,” further solidified her status as a versatile and accomplished artist.

This year, Hera Björk was chosen as a contestant in Söngvakeppnin, Iceland’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Her entry, “Við förum hærra” / “Scared of Heights,” captivated audiences and judges alike. Successfully advancing to the final, she emerged victorious with the English rendition of her song, earning the honour to represent Iceland once again on the Eurovision stage for the second time in her career.

What do the “Scared of Heights” lyrics mean?

Hera comes with a song that delves into the intricacies of love, specifically exploring the sensation of falling deeply in love. However, this isn’t the typical innocent “young and dumb” high school romance; instead, it delves into the complexities of adult love, where both individuals carry the weight of personal experiences and past traumas. Despite the upbeat melody, the lyrics resonate with the hesitations and fears that arise from previous encounters, causing one to pause and reflect before embarking on new beginnings.

Look how far we made it
Standing on the edge of a promise
I’m not one to take risks
Getting hurt taught me to be cautious

The song serves as a moment of introspection, urging listeners to confront their fears and embrace the risks they desire to take. It gently encourages going with the flow, even amidst feelings of apprehension, recognising that past experiences don’t always dictate present outcomes. While history may repeat itself at times, the song emphasises that every situation is unique, and not every outcome will mirror the past. Ultimately, it inspires courage to pursue love and new opportunities, despite lingering uncertainties.

I know we’re going sky high
Going sky high

At times, you simply see it coming, and despite any fear of heights, you choose to soar to new heights.

“Scared of Heights” lyrics — Hera Björk (Iceland Eurovision 2024)

Songwriters: Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir, Ferras Alqaisi, Jaro Omar, Michael Burek

Scared of Heights

(I feel it coming)
(I feel it coming)

Look how far we made it
Standing on the edge of a promise
I’m not one to take risks
Getting hurt taught me to be cautious

Maybe we should leave this
Cause what would be the use
Of crashing into you
We could end up in pieces
Don’t need another heart-shaped bruise

I feel it coming
Been here before and never got it right
Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scared of heights
I know we’re going sky high
Going sky high
But what if we forget how to fly
Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scared of heights

Dive in with my heart first
I’m still drowning in this rational fear
Wish that I could unlearn
I can’t enjoy the view from up here

Maybe we should leave this
Cause what would be the use
Of crashing into you
We could end up in pieces
Don’t need another heart-shaped bruise

I feel it coming
Been here before and never got it right
Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scared of heights
I know we’re going sky high
Going sky high
But what if we forget how to fly
Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scared of heights

(I feel it coming)
(I feel it coming)

I feel it coming
Been here before and never got it right
Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scared of heights

Oh I’m scared of heights
Fell a couple times
And I barely made it out alive
Oh I’m scared of heights
But the truth is I’m
Still falling if I kiss you good-bye

Baby I’m wondering
If falling in love has got me scаred of heightѕ
