It’s coming down to the wire with The Voice Australia. The show has reached its final week, with the semi-final and grand finale all due to take place. But first, it was time for the Showdowns round, where Equinox singer Johnny Manuel had one more chance to impress.

Going into the Showdowns round, five acts remained on each coach’s team. And Sunday night’s show saw the final five acts of coaches Guy Sebastian and Kelly Rowland fighting for a place in the upcoming semi-final. Each coach could only select two of their five acts, so the competition was fierce.

Johnny Manuel was last to perform in the episode’s line-up. He surprised the other judges by singing Guy Sebastian’s 2018 single “Before I Go”.

It’s a song of strength and defiance, a perfect fit for the battle-format that The Voice takes. Johnny expressed the emotion of the song, bringing spirit and passion to the performance. And no matter what the outcome of The Voice Australia 2020, the line “You’ll know my name before I go” seemed very apt.

Guy Sebastian selects his semi-finalists

While the semi-final qualifiers were decided by the coaches alone, the Australian public also had their say. In a vote, 88% of viewers felt that Johnny should go through to the semi-final — the most of any of the nine other acts in that episode.

Guy Sebastian agreed and sent Johnny through to the semi-finals. There he’ll be up against seven other acts, including Guy Sebastian’s little brother Chris Sebastian who is one of Kelly Rowland’s semi-finalists. In Monday night’s episode, Boy George and Delta Goodrem will decide the two acts each will send to the semi-finals.

From the semi-final, the eight acts will become four. And those four acts will compete in the grand finale to be the winner of The Voice Australia 2020.

What do you think? Can Johnny Manuel make it to the grand final? Could he even win The Voice Australia 2020? Tell us your thoughts below!

Surprised how much I liked Chris Sebastian when he’s singing a non-ballad song. He looked really comfortable and am glad he made it.
Johnny continues to be the class act but can maybe tone down some of the histrionics. Don’t have to act as if every performance is your blind audition!
