In 2016 she gave Bulgaria a fourth-place finish at Eurovision. But Poli Genova‘s good fortune ran out on The Masked Singer Bulgaria. She was the first act to be eliminated on the second Bulgarian series of the popular singing reality show.

Poli’s costume was Очите (the Eyes). She wore a green bodysuit covered in foliage. Poking out the top was a giant pair of eyes. We’re not entirely sure what it was meant to represent, but we’re guessing it might be a person peering over a hedge.

It sounds almost unbelievable that such an popular performer as Poli would be the first to be eliminated. But after seeing the Eyes’ performance this week, well, it starts to make sense.

Poli performed the classic rock song “Paranoid” by Ozzy Osbourne’s legendary band Black Sabbath. Poli’s sweet vocals of “If Love Was a Crime” are nowhere to be heard. Instead she disguises her voice, taking on gruff rock tones.

Vocally, it wasn’t the best. But as far as entertainment value goes, it’s hard to beat the sight of a hedge with eyes singing an Ozzy Osbourne classic.

Last week the Eyes showed a different side of her vocal talents. Poli performed the 1990 dance-pop song “I’ve Been Thinking About You” by Londonbeat. She put on a different voice, giving it a sort of shrill tone. But there are times when her regular singing voice can be heard.

Poli’s performances may have been entertaining, but they weren’t enough to keep her on the show. She lost a duel against the Baba Yaga character and faced the bottom three with the Scarecrow and the Candle.

The final vote was taken and the Eyes was eliminated. Poli had so masterfully disguised her voice that none of the four judges and managed to successfully guess her identity and were shocked to see the Bulgarian pop star beneath the shrubbery.

Poli enjoyed her time on the show, saying “The experience is great, and the costume is really specific — it takes 15 minutes to get dressed.”

Last year Equinox singer Zhana Bergdenorff finished second on the first series of The Masked Singer Bulgaria.

Is Sandra Kim the Queen on The Masked Singer Belgium?

Meanwhile in Belgium, there’s a potential Eurovision connection on their version of The Masked Singer.

The new series features Koningin — the Queen — and fans are wondering if her royal highness is none other than Belgium’s Eurovision 1986 winner Sandra Kim.

The Queen gave an impressive performance of Sia’s “Unstoppable”. On YouTube, the video is the most popular of this week’s performance and has clocked up nearly 100,000 views.

Most Eurovision fans will know Sandra as the fresh-faced 13-year-old who won Eurovision in 1986, but the artist is now an experienced 47-year-old performer and has what it takes to be a Queen.

Belgium’s Koningin follows Australia’s Queen who was recently revealed to be Kate Miller-Heidke. Australia’s Eurovision 2019 singer placed second in The Masked Singer Australia.

What do you think? Were you surprised that Poli Genova was first to be eliminated? Do you think Sandra Kim is the Queen? Tell us your thoughts here.

It’s very clear the Queen from Belgium is Sandra Kim. All the clues point to her. She is also the favorite to win and this is a great show for her to show what she is capable of. She is completly blowing Belgium’s mind 🙂

There’s no way you’d know that was Poli based just on the performance. I still don’t know which one is better (or more entertaining), the performer disguising their voice completely like this or making little effort to do so to the point where there is no mystery to who it is (like KMH in Australia).

Is the Belgian Masked Singer a Flemish/Walloon coproduction? Cuz if it’s all Flemish, I might have a harder time believing Sandra Kim is on it.

According to Wikipedia, it airs on VTM, which is a Flemish station broadcasting in Dutch. According to her discography, though, she has released three studio albums in Dutch (two of them also being released in a French version). It may not necessarily indicate fluency in Dutch, but she may be able to speak it well enough to take part in the show (since the celebrities narrate their own clue packages, albeit with disguised voices).

There were so many clues in just one episode, it’s impossible it isn’t her.

The Masked Singer is (finally) coming for the first time to Israel on Wednesday 🙂
I wonder whether we are going to see there some Eurovision stars as well

Oh, I would be shocked if there weren’t. I think a lot of Israeli Eurovision stars meet the basic qualifications of “big, but not too big to be involved.” Imagine if one of the contestants was Shefita in disguise again!

No to be rude or anything but «If Love Was A Crime» was so supported by backing vocalists that you could barely hear Poli, and it was a reason for that. Not as obvious as «Dum Tek Tek», but still. I remember that Samra was slaughtered for her vocal performance and use of backing vocalists, and Poli not

I mean, I’ll kind of grant you that, but she was vocally on-point with a much weaker song in 2011. I guess it all depends.
