Along with host country the Netherlands, the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — get an automatic spot in the grand final of Eurovision 2021. They drop a lot of euros, and we thank them for helping keep the contest afloat. We used to roll our eyes at the jokes these nations would send to the contest. But in recent years they have been earning their keep.
Automatic Qualifiers at Eurovision 2021
Italy’s Måneskin are perhaps making the most noise with “Zitti e buoni”. The rock quartet won Italy’s Sanremo in early March, but have since trimmed down and cleaned up their entry to comply with Eurovision rules.
France’s Barbara Pravi is certainly the one that’s most favoured with the bookies. “Voilà” has rested near the top of the odds tables ever since it was selected at the very start of national selection season.
Spain’s Blas Cantó gets deep on “Voy a quedarme” while Germany’s Jendrik is taking a completely different approach with “I Don’t Feel Hate”.
The United Kingdom’s James Newman brings “Embers” which has already lit a spark underneath the British fanbase. The number is completed by the Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy. “Birth Of A New Age” sees Jeangu embrace his Surinamese heritage.
But who is YOUR favourite? You can listen to the six automatic qualifiers below and then vote in our poll. You can vote for as many contestants as you like, but you can only vote ONE time, so make it count. This poll closes, just ahead of the first rehearsals in May. It’s up to you, Europe. Start voting now!
This is wrong forum for Italy. Its a song contest, not a screem contest
Juries usually don’t respect rock entries, especially the ones that you cannot understand what they are saying, so I fear that Italy will not have many jury points this year, somewhere like in 2018 I believe, but totally the televoters will elevate them, leaving Finland behind them
I never thought that I would say this but the big 5 is amazing this year. Uk is my favourite this year and Germany is in my top 10 too. Netherlands is really underrated. Spain is really sweet, France and Italy are great too (I’m tasteless)
Italy, Netherlands, and UK are all currently part of my top 10 but honestly I like all six of these songs and I think the automatic qualifiers delivered this year
Spain is the weakest. Omg when are they going to send a banger? Can’t believe they missed it in 2018
Another year with being disappointed about the choice of my homecountry 🙁 Germany.
The United Kingdom all the way!!!
It’s so lovely to see everybody who I agree with getting downvoted lmao
What’s your top/favourite??
1) UK
2) Spain
3) Italy
4) Germany
5) France
6) Netherlands
Someone had exactly that but with 5 and 6 swapped and it’s the most downvoted in the whole comments
every man to his taste, but Germany just can’t be higher than France. just can’t.
Top 6 from those:
1:UK
2:France
3:Netherlands
4:Spain
5:Germany
6:Italy
Top 5:
1. Italy (personal 16)
2. UK (personal 17)
3. France (personal 20)
4. Germany (personal 21)
5. Netherlands (personal 28)
6. Spain (personal 37)
I haven’t made my final top yet but: 1. France: is probably my winner of the year. Excellent song from the first listen. 2. Germany: Also really liked this. It’s happy and has an interesting structure. Will be in my top 10. 3. Italy: It’s a good song but not really my style. I think it will be in my top 20. 4. Netherlands: I’m not a big fan of the melody of the chorus but the rest of the song is fine. 5. United Kingdom: It’s a decent song but it doesn’t stand out for me. I’ll listen to… Read more »
none of them are in my top third, but embers is the one i tolerate the most
Same!
I truly love the song from Netherlands, don’t understand why is so underrated, anyway Italy is my ultimate favorite this year
Because it’s an “ethnic” song, but not in the type of way a lot of Europeans are comfortable with.
Germany, France and Italy.
I never thought I’d be typing this but….it’s the UK, easily.
Spain and Italy are both good but the UK is genuinely one of my favourite songs this year.
italy and france will be far ahead the rest at the jurys!
televoting is more difficult to predict – i think italy most points and france second most and maybe UK at third?
the most important question will be:which kind of music will be prefer this year – the slower stuff or the stuff with more tempo?
France. Bien sûr.
1.Spain
2.France
3.Italy
4.UK
5.Germany
6.Netherlands
In my top:
1. Italy
4. France
17. Netherlands
23. Spain
27. UK
28. Germany
Why Sweden isn’t listed since it’s an automatic qualifier no matter what lmao
Go tell Anna Bergendahl
XDDDDD
funny ironic joke +1
1. France (my personal winner)
2. United Kingdom (my personal 9th place)
3. Spain (my personal 10th place)
4. Germany (my personal 11th place)
5. Italy (my personal 14th place)
6. Netherlands (my personal 27th place)
I can’t believe I put all the big 5 countries in my top 15. This year will be interesting for them.
Honestly, I kinda think most of them are bringing their A-game. Out of all of them, the one that’s most underwhelming is Spain, and that doesn’t mean that I hate the song. Its just the least interesting out of this group. There is however going to be a new version performed (which isn’t going to be released digitally), so perhaps its best to wait to hear it live. For me, the two clear standouts are Italy and France, with Netherlands, Germany and UK close behind.
Well I’m weird and this is mine
Germany
Italy
France
UK
Spain
The Netherlands
This is exactly my order too!!
France and Italy. But I’ve also voted for the Netherlands, because Jeangu has been seriously underrated again.
Overall, a good year for the Big 5. The only one I don’t like is the German entry.
1. France
2. Italy
3. Spain
4. UK
5. The Netherlands
6. Germany
I think France, Italy and Spain offer a local touch and personal compositions and that has always an added value in a music contest.
Same could be said for the other 3 countries tho no?
Especially for Germany, very personal and very German. Cameron!
Here is my ranking for the ‘Big 5’ + The Netherlands…
1) United Kingdom
2)France
3)Spain
4)Italy
5)The Netherlands
6)Germany
1-5 are all solid entries and I like them all but none I like enough to make me want to vote for them. Germany…just no… try again next year and bring back Lena!
1 United Kingdom
2 The Netherlands
3 Germany
4 France
5 Spain
6 Italy
Here is my ranking of the big five plus netherlands
Italy of course. There is no competition in my heart haha
1. Italy
2. France
3. The Netherlands
4. United Kingdom
5. Spain
6. Germany
Italy sends rock (a genre that is hardly seen in ESC), Netherlands sends a singer who dares to bring a song with lyrics in a creole language and UK sends something you can hear on the radio and not to think it’s from Eurovision.
Germany is just teen pop, France is another ballad, and worst of all, Spain sends a pop singer who brings a ballad. Ballads and teen pop don’t bring anything new to ESC.
I don’t think Germany is teen pop. I don’t know what exactly it is, but it’s something worse than teen pop imo.
Excellent candidates for bottom 5:
. The Netherlands
. Spain
. Germany
. United Kingdom
🙂
History repeats itself!
United Kingdom is great tho
imo its the kind of song most people would enjoy, but nobody would pick up the phone and vote for
Perhaps. But it is nice to see the UK actually trying instead of getting a decent song purely by accident once every decade.
Nope Germany and Spain are the rest are not.
They are all just OK songs. If you are going to participate in a contest, should you present an OK song or a competitive song?
Italy!
My top 6 from them would be :
1) UK (13)
2) Italy (16)
3) Netherlands(24)
4) Spain (30)
5) Germany (31)
6)France (32)
1 France
2 Italy
3 Uk
4 Spain
5 Germany
6 Netherlands
I support the song because I love listening to it. It’s okay to have a different opinion, but why are you searching for reasons other than “people think it’s a good song”? find it weird to support songs because they are or aren’t a certain genre; because they have a certain message; or because they’re from a certain country. (last two not related to your comment but I’ve seen them A LOT)
I hope the people saying they like the UK entry actually vote for it…! For the first time since 2017 I actually like our entry, but worried again about low televote scoring…
Liking it doesn’t = to voting for it. Like I would only vote for my favorites and UK may sound good but not enough to be part of my favorites for now.
I’m sending it a vote or two 🙂
UK it’s the type of song that everybody like, and no one hate..or love. So i think it will bottom 5 in the televote, but save from the bottom 5 by the jury, so something around 20th.
1. Italy
2. Spain
3. Germany
4. France
5. UK
6. Netherlands
I actually only love Italy’s entry. Spain and Germany I like. France and the UK are okay and the Netherlands is completely not my style.
Personally I like it because I think it’s really high energy and I love the lead singer’s voice. I think it’ll really stand out in the final, too, which can only be a good thing.
Italy <3
Also… I find the UK quite bland ._.
The UK and France will be in the Top 10 or at least somewhere on the left hand side on the scoreboard (Top 13). Italy will flop and will do as well as Italy 2014, Netherlands will be praised by jurors in par with Lucie Jones UK 2017 but, will get low public support. Spain, depending on revamp could be mid table or contention for last place, Germany no matter how good or flashy the staging, Bottom 3 for this train wreck
I haven’t listened to the UK’s yet, so I have no opinion on it yet. France’s is nice, but it hasn’t quite gotten into “favorite” territory for me. Spain was kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with the two candidate songs it put forward, and while the one it ended up going with was the better of the two songs, I don’t expect Spain to place highly. The Netherlands’ song I like, but I’m not in love with it. I think it’s awesome, though, that Jeangu is incorporating bits of Surinamese culture into the lyrics. The… Read more »
You describing Maneskin as “punk rock” tells me all I need to know about the breadth of your own music knowledge.
Maneskin isn’t punk rock but a watered down version of Sex Pistols and other grungy almost sleazy bands from the late 80’s and early 90’s. There are good elements to Italys song but, I find myself going against the tide with it. I want to like it but cannot seem to get to grips with it. Finland on the other hand with has rock elements like Linkin Park and Amaranthe is in my Top 5.
Netherlands, he is criminally underated for the 2nd year in a row, but his live performance at rotterdam will surprise people.
In my opinion for the UK, Spain & Germany to place higher than him on this list makes me strongly questions peoples taste.
The Netherlands moves me deeply, it gave me goosebumps when I first heard it. I also really like The UK, Spain, Italy, and France. The German guy reminds me of the Paul brothers for some reason and I can’t get past it.
I mean come on. Italy for sure, others are merely passable.
I agree 100% whisker
Italy is my favorite this year, go Måneskin! France is my n.3 and I quite like the UK too. The other 3 I dislike a lot.
I wish the Netherlands was getting more love, it’s a great song and video — I’m really looking forward to the live performance in May 🙂
This must be the UK’s best result in one of these polls since…Blue??
Oooh I’d say 1998 not 1994 as immani was amazing! But love the Frances love.
Oh great recommendations both of you 🙂
1998 Imaani I know, but I hadn’t seen 1994 before, just watched it now, a nice classic entry! Both are better than much of 2000s UK and some 2010s UK.
I need to find more time to get acquainted with vintage Eurovision. I’d recommend UK 1983 (https://youtu.be/in5hT6P9KFA), very cute, very 80s!
So easy! France is definitely my favorite and I also like the UK entry.
