In recent days there has been a flurry of news about Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2022. From the news that Diodato will finally get his moment on the ESC stage during a special interval to the big reveal that a DJ set will feature Dardust, Benny Benassi and Sophie & The Giants, it’s clear that Italy’s RAI is going big.
We can now exclusively reveal that producers are planning a unique opening that involves drone choreography and a spectacular light display.
During the recent pre-party season, we met with a series of people connected to the production in Italy. One exciting piece of info is that Eurovision will open with a drone flying inside Pala Olimpico. At some point it will make contact with a laser beam, which will then multiply to create a musical instrument. We’re not sure what that musical instrument will be, but given that laser beams look like strings, you can narrow it down to something like a violin, harp or guitar. The drone will then “play” whatever instrument is formed.
?? WOW! #Eurovision host broadcaster RAI and design house Atelier Francesca Montinaro have shared this teaser of how the Turin stage will look in motion. pic.twitter.com/x2ijU7NAEo— wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs) April 14, 2022
Our sources tell us that after this segment we will go on some kind of magical journey involving both human dancers and a fantastic light show that carries us through Turin and beyond the Earth. Who knows: Maybe we’ll see some of the sights Sam Ryder sings about in SPACE MAN? We anticipate stars, planets and maybe even some black holes.
Given that the opening of this semi-final is indeed the opening of Eurovision 2022, producers will no doubt make the most of the giant sun that’s built into the centre of the stage.
Drones have become a favourite tool of large-scale events in recent years. The Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo last summer included a fleet of 1,824 drones that formed a series of geometrical shapes before turning into the blue-and-white emblem of the Games.
Ahead of the recent Super Bowl in Los Angeles, the NFL treated visitors to a drone show over the LA skies. Formations included the Lombardi trophy — which the winning team receives after the game each year — and a footballer making a pass.
Are you excited to see drones in action on the Eurovision stage? What instrument do you anticipate the laser beams forming? Let us know in the comments box below!

Will Maneskin perform in Turin?
Of course. Hope they will perform in both semifinal 1 and grand final.
They confirmed they would in an interview in February. It would be nice for everyone if they or Eurovision would officially announce it because the faux suspense is unnecessary.
