Benidorm Fest 2023: Vicco “Nochentera”
Vicco is a relatively unknown name to the Spanish scene, but her entry “Nochentera” is starting to make waves. Around New Year it became the most listened to Benidorm Fest 2023 entry and by mid month, even the football World Champions were talking about it.
Twenty-six-year old Vicco, whose real name is Victoria Riba, is a singer-songwriter from Barcelona. Benidorm Fest 2023 is not her first Eurovision attempt: she was also one of the composers of “Muérdeme” by María, runner up in OT 2018’s Eurovision gala. She has performed with Spanish superstar Alejandro Sanz and has written songs for Edurne. She has also collaborated with fellow Benidorm Fest entrants Siderland.
What do the “Nochentera” lyrics mean?
As you’ll remember, the title is a port manteau of “Noche ochentera” and “Noche entera”, which mean ‘Eightees night’ and ‘The whole night’. That should give you an idea about the whole feel: a fun, fresh and uncomplicated entry: “And we go to shout from the balcony, because life is ours to enjoy, because we have so much love to give, the neighbour starts knocking the door because she wants to come and dance”.
Vicco does tell her lover to come over, and she focuses on that person quite a lot: “Hold me by the hips and we’ll dance a slow one the whole night”. “We’ll do it like they do in Vegas, what happens here, stays here”. And then there’s the meme. Because you’ll notice there’s a group of people singing and a male voice before the second chorus. That’s because the neighbour indeed comes and join the party: “Bring some ice, Mari!” – the male voice says.

It’s so simple but I love it! To me, this feels like a song that the characters in the Netflix series Elite would party to!
Hope either this or Jose’s song wins!
I soooo hope this wins <3
This one’s my winner purely based on sound!
Just one detail: La nochentera era era como una noche ochentera can be translated as: “The whole night, ight, Like an Eightees night” or “the whole night was like an eightees night” as era as a word means was.
I think she is playing with the words here.
That’s also a good take on it. I chose to interpret it as just a repetition, but it could be a play on words as well
I might be wrong, but when I hear Nochentera, I hear late 90s or maybe early 2000s, not 80s. However, it’s a very strong hook, and the song grew on me. I can see Vicco exceeding expectations in terms of results.
Parts of it remind me of 80s Thomas the Tank Engine. Does this make sense to anybody else?
For some reason this song reminds me sonically of last year’s Sigues en Mi Mente. It was a song that felt like bubblegum pop. I never really gave it much thought when it competed but when it now shows up on my playlist, it brings a smile to my face and makes bop.
