Day 6 of rehearsals for Eurovision 2024 is a funky one.

To begin with, we’ll continue on with the second rehearsals for nine acts from semi-final 2. Like on Wednesday, the EBU will release photos and 30-second teasers in a roundup on YouTube, though individual broadcasters may decide to share them on social media earlier.

To end the day, it’s the turn of the automatic qualifiers to have their first rehearsals. For these, we return back to the mixture of photos and a behind the scenes TikTok video.

We’ll try to update this post as things drop. Regardless, please share your thoughts in the comments section throughout the day!

Where do people see the class in Angelina’s staging? It looks tacky… I started to think it was my fault not “getting” how brilliant the song is, but at this point, everything she is doing is commended here as if she was the 80s Madonna.

I agree. I am not a fan of the song, still I appreciated Angelina’s singing style and sass attitude + outfit / staging at the San Remo festival. They suited the message of the song superbly and the focus was on Angelina. Now all the visuals, and pyros, and dancers in tacky outfits are not only unnecessary but they steal from the attractiveness of the entry. I can see no upgrade, rather the entry becoming more messy.

I think Italy has a good chance to get high points from the juries and from the public; as long as camera shots are also good 🙂
My favourites are Italy and Croatia; Switzerland aka Pink Panther doesnt deserve top5 result.

Am I the only one who isn’t into Italy’s staging at all? It’s so busy with textures and everything just gets completely lost in the mess of details. ?
And I absolutely adore this song and want it to do well.

From the big 5 i love UK’s performance. Looks like a videoclip. Very cool. Italy is my biggest dissappointment . Ugly clothes and the colors dont seem to match the light and fun song. We are not going back to Italy for sure.

I believe that Angelina has destroyed her chances to win with the juries. Her erotic stage performance looks great, but it’s out of place here and could make her song look somewhat cheap.

I get Germany’s staging. I like it. A great analogy for life and how it can take a sudden turn.

Now that the first part of today’s rehearsals is out, let me recap my way Malta >> It’s not bad; it could qualify, but the song is so generic, and the performance/staging, although good, is not authentic or original enough. Albania >> This is not going anywhere. The chorus is not bad, but the whole song is not competitive enough. NQ Greece >> a bit disappointed by the clip. Let’s wait and see.Q Switzerland >> flawless. The staging is awesome, the song is awesome, and his performance and professionalism are supreme. He performs so smoothly and elegantly while signaling dynamism.… Read more »

I’m sorry to say this, but France takes the crown for the most pretentious act this year. Ok , we get it, you can sing. That moving away from mic is such a show of, it leaves me totally flat for his objectively good vocals. This is actually my biggest drop on my list bcs of performer. I believe he is a good person, but that just screams cocky and over the top. Excuse me French fans, don’t take it personally.

Just watched wiwi blogg review of UK. Simon mentions Iceland 97 Paul Oscar comparing Olly staging and how Paul was ahead of his time but finished 19th. What Simon failed to mention in 97 televoting was only available to a limited number of countries and that is were Paul got the majority of his points from. Absolute classic Iceland 97 and one of my favorite stagings

Angelina has winner vibes.

One thing I worry that might stop her is the televoter mentality.

“Italy only won three years ago… Rai can’t host properly, what about the death sun…Torino was nice but I’d like to go to Dubrovnik for my annual May vacation… Croatia deserves it more because a first-time winner is overdue… Finland should win because they were robbed last year…”

It’s totally possible that I’m the only one thinking this but I feel it wasn’t necessary for the story of the song.

Have certain rules changed for 2024?

“The accompanying Backing track may optionally contain Backing Vocals. It’s just a saying. And I’m not an english speaking person. So the real meaning of some english words I’m not always familiar with. It’s just what people say.

I apologize. It was wrong of me. It came out wrong. Of course Olly is good as he is. But the performance feels too sexual and erotic for my taste. I won’t apologize for that.

Malta is being underrated in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, it is not a top 15 or even top 20 song, but is, in my opinion, good enough to qualify. Unfortunately, this is year the competition is too good.

You are right, but my point was that in other years Malta would qualify easily. But as this year the competition is very strong, the song has been downgraded and underrated.

Yeah… It really does depend on what people vibe with on the night… near first-time only viewers on the show-nights vs. the fandom months-long views and pre-conditioning. We can’t really ‘judge’, we’re too ‘in it’. I assume the first-timers make up the majority of the televote. Then, the juries… Who knows what they’re feeling ‘this season’. I have no clue wjo or what they might be drawn to, apart from La Noia (it kind of a classic and classy format). Bambie to the final, as I want to see maximum exposure for them, and then it in the hands of… Read more »

Slimane literally took the entire stage concept from Teya Dora, changed black to white, and threw away the rock haha He even copied her “crashing to the floor” for the last prechorus. How can those choreographers do something so obvious and not be sanctioned?
Differences: No rock, no black but white, and holding his arms up a few times.

For the 1st time in years I think any Big 5 may not come last in the final.
Most of them will have some jury points to avoid it (Germany in particular) so maybe Spain but some televote may come thru.

It has been like that for the last 10 years, no surprise there. Tbh I think it’s not a problem to have great staging if you are able to deliver a good performance on a good song. Sadly it’s not always the case but I think Sweden is not the first target here. There are way worse then them.

Can we talk about how some artists rely on the soundtrack? We’re not far from playback for some of them. Either that or there was a problem with the microphone…
Completely unfair for the artists who actually sing by themselves.

Awful. Cheating. Totally not in the spirit of the backing vocals rule, which was only ever supposed to be a temporary measure anyway. Disingenuous con artistry, prioritising television over music and art. Unfair. Trickery. Insulting.

Well, Malta for the very few we can here her actually singing I can’t really judge xD But yeah Czechia my god. If you listen carefully you can hear her real voice but it’s nearly completely covered by the soundtrack. I think it’s a shame because the song is not bad at all and it seems the staging is actually well done but she doesn’t deserve to take someone else’s place in final if she can’t sing. It’s a bit the same for Denmark. I mean I personnally like Sand, it’s in my top 15 this year and I know… Read more »

Just read elsewhere Olly has changed the middle 8 of the song. Something we saw Sam do in 2022. Let’s see if it has any positive impact.
I find Dizzy very repetitive with no change in lyrics towards the end so this is hopefully a positive move

I don’t think it’s only the outfit for any act. It’s always the combination of all visuals and whether we have an aesthetic result or not.

That’s not really much better. Songs are audio, not visual. Staging for me is about selling the song, convincing the listener subconsciously. We shouldn’t score it directly.

I always considered eurovision as rating of visuals+song…. It has it in the name, and it’s a televised contest. Nothing shallow about it, and both aspects (visuals+song) are important in judging. Again, my opinion only.

Jonas

“Eurovision” is the name of the satellite network that broadcasts the contest, nothing more. You might also see the Eurovision logo trackside at European Athletics Championships, or boxing matches. Even papal masses live from the Vatican can be preceded by Te Deum.

It’d be equally ridiculous to judge the fastest runner by what colour their shorts were, or how tight they were.

Thanos

Whether we like it or not it’s no simply a song contest. Sanremo is a song contest. In Eurovision we judge the whole package and that contains the visuals. I don’t think that’s necessarily bad: visuals can also be artistic

Well then when we listen to Tattoo or Hold Me Now or Fairytale or Rise Like A Phoenix on Spotify… do they stop being Eurovision winners?

Are they only Eurovision winners when reprised complete with staging, costumes, pyrotechnics etc.?

Thanos

No because the song of course is still the most crucial part. Just not the only one. If we want it to be we should switch back to the old orchestra format like Sanremo.
Also Hold Me Closer wasn’t a Eurovision winner but it should have been 🙂
