It’s time for the Wiwi Jury  — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — to go back to Chisinau and review for more acts from Moldova‘s national selection O melodie pentru Europa 2016. Four acts, four different type of songs, four different styles of singing. Who will win over our judges? Let’s find out!

17. Max Fall feat. Dan Vozniuc & Malloy – “Game lOVER”

Patrick: Why am I not surprised that I don’t like it?! Basically this is the same as every other song – a cheap, lousy, East-European pop trash with horrible English. It is of course one of the better ones but still this is so old-fashioned and bad, it has mould on it. In any event, this is nothing that I want to hear in my lovely Eurovision.

Score: 2/10

Antranig: Lyrically, this is a complete mess — “the game is lover”, really? Yet in a completely convoluted way, I absolutely love it. He sounds better than a lot of people did at the live auditions which certainly works in their favour. I have every reason to hate this but it’s very catchy and I wouldn’t mind hearing it again.

Score: 8/10

Bogdan: The song is not bad and it has a lot of potential to steal the semi-final in Chisinau. Max is charismatic and a good singer. (I’m just going to ignore the apparent shouting because of the abysmal studio conditions he performed in). However, it doesn’t scream Moldova to me at all and is a bit dated, which is disappointing. Still, a decent entry.

Score: 7/10

Kristin: Yeah, so the lyrics are kind of bad, but that’s always to be expected in Moldova. The song however is super catchy and Max seems to be a strong singer with great stage presence. I find myself getting more positive as I dig deeper into O melodi pentru Europa and “Game lOver” is one of its strongest entries.

Score: 8.5/10

Luis: This one’s good! The overall song is really cool and it has a lot of energy, so I prefer to stay with that and not pass on to comment the lyrics. All I’ll just say is that Aliona Moon gained a lot by changing “O Mie” to Romanian. Max’s stage presence is very enjoyable, and I think he could give a very good show on a big stage. This is the way Moldova, this is the way.

Score: 8/10

WIWI JURY SCORE: 5.45/10

18. Maxim Zavidia – “La La Love”

Patrick: You can just copy and paste my comments for all the songs in this group. It’s not worse, it’s not better, it’s just a bad song with a happy sound but with bad lyrics and an annoying singer. Though, to say something positive, it is not as bad as the other ones.
Score: 4/10

Antranig: I hate to break it to you, but Ivi Adamou you are not. Parts of the song are very catchy but most of it is really annoying. The song is begging for some fierce female vocals and while Maxim is not a bad singer, this is not the song for him. I don’t expect much from this one.

Score: 4.5/10

Bogdan: His heavily accented “La, la la” is both hilarious and endearing. That part is cute, but the verses aren’t that great and too lyric-heavy compared with the lightness of the chorus. A happy-go-lucky song performed by a smiley-face, but unfortunately there is nothing much behind this emoticon.

Score: 4/10

Kristin: I feel like I’ve stumbled into a Moldovan version of Robbie Williams here, but that’s pretty much the only thing this guy has going with him. The song is sort of boring and bland, and easily forgettable. But it’s not horrible in any way. Just one of those songs, that leave nothing behind.

Score: 4.5/10

Luis: I was actually feeling it in the first verses, but then the chorus came in and that illusion faded away. And then that shout after the first chorus. I like Maxim’s attitude and also his voice is quite nice, but this is not his song for Eurovision. Maybe he should go more Gianluca than Ivi Adamou next year.

WIWI JURY SCORE: 4.5/10

19. Diana Brescan – “Till The End”

Patrick: In this  very weak selection this sounds like the diamond of the show. And it practically is as it is the only well arranged song of the selection. She has a deep voice, she has a pantsuit and she is a good performer. Okay compared to other countries this is trash, but for Moldova it is golden and probably the best song in it. You can win for me, queen!

Score: 7.5/10

Antranig: She is serving up some sensible pantsuit realness! I have an undeniable soft spot for women with deep voices — see Mei Finegold — and I am definitely in Diana Brescan’s corner. With a minor revamp, this could easily be a powerful rock song. This is the most underrated song in the entire competition and I hope Moldova gives her a chance.

Score: 10/10

Bogdan: Diana is the dark horse again. I have a lot of respect for talented Moldovan singers who keep trying to represent their country, especially if their entries are consistently not cringey. However, “Till The End” needs something special, like a (better) bridge, in order for it to stand out in a female-heavy selection. A revamp is needed.

Score: 8/10

Kristin: This is actually okay. Strong melody, good voice and a powerful beat. Might do good, given the chance. It might even reach the finals, should it win in Moldova. Might — if she doesn’t have some crazy on-stage gimmick, like cutting her hair or dancing police officers. Please don’t do that, Diana.

Score: 7/10

Luis: This is kinda good. My problem is that the background music is a tad low, and a bit too simple to enhance Diana’s vocals, which also get a bit monotonous. I think a good revamp can be a win-win for this song. There’s material, it just needs to be worked on.

WIWI JURY SCORE: 6.13

20. Chris Maroo – “Tonight”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJPpyQCTN0k

Patrick: Are you freakin’ kidding me? Is this really a song for the selection? I mean I know we heard the most horrible songs in Moldova this year but this is the cherry on top. I’m speechless. When I go to the local market, on the left side of the vegetable-area, there are tomatoes that can sing better than this girl. I’m sorry but this ain’t a tomato salad.

Score: 0/10

Antranig: Chris Maroo must be Moldova’s most eligible cougar after this performance. I love her voice and her energy is infectious but the song is rather weak. This would probably sound better if she had a few drinks before coming on stage but I can’t fault her enthusiasm or her excitement.

Score: 5.5/10

Bogdan: “Tonight” is as unfortunate a song as her stage name. This surely must be the worst entry/performance I’ve witnessed this NF season, bar none. It’s not even unintentionally funny. It looks and sounds intentionally atrocious. But I guess you’re bound to get some utter trash when you have to pick 24 songs out of 47 entries!

Score: 0/10

Kristin: Oh sweet Eurovision God, that was annoying! It’s all I’m going to say about this.

Score: 3/10

Luis: As Florence Welch would say: “Oh Mercy, I implore.” I’d rather rip my ears off before listening to such an annoying song again. I’m sorry to be so explicitly mean, but I can’t figure out any other way of reviewing this.

WTF Chris Maroo??? I think I can sing better while I’m in the shower, the other songs must be very (VERY) bad, if not I don’t understand why this girl made the cut. Well, she isn’t guilty… she just likes singing and want to go to Sweden, but the juries are there for something. I rather listen Sasha Bogdinov in the semi than this, really.

Moldova’s so doomed this year.
