Australia‘s broadcaster SBS has revealed its act for Junior Eurovision 2016 will be 12-year-old Alexa Curtis. Alexa was a contestant on the Australian edition of The Voice Kids in 2014, which she won, with Australia’s JESC 2015 singer Bella Paige coming in second place.
Alexa is an experienced singer, who began contemporary and jazz vocal training when she was just 5 years old. She appeared in an amateur production of Oliver in 2012, and impressed both the coaches and viewers in her 2014 participation on The Voice Kids.
Under the guidance of coach Delta Goodrem, Alexa’s assured performance of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” brought her victory in the grand final. The video has since been viewed over 13 million times on YouTube.
Last year, wiwibloggs picked Alexa as as potential JESC act for Australia:
“Alexa Curtis is one of Australia’s most loved teeny tiny singing pocket rockets. After winning the first (and so far, only) season of The Voice Kids of Australia in 2015, she launched her debut single “Playground”. At only 11 years old, and totally adorable, she could have Europe cooing and awwing as they pick up their phones to vote.”
Alexa says she was excited to learn she’d been selected to represent Australia in Malta. “I know it’s going to be a crazy experience but I just can’t wait to get over there and do what I love doing most: singing for people.”
Australia made its debut at Junior Eurovision in 2015, when The Voice Kids runner-up Bella Paige performed “My Girls”, co-written by Delta Goodrem. The song placed eighth.
SBS has again gone with internal selection in choosing their act for JESC. Details of Alexa’s song and Australia’s JESC jury members will be revealed soon.

Her rather grown-up appearance and style of performing seems at odds with the decision to make it more of “kids” show which is what it should be.
