Tributes have been pouring in for Swedish DJ and record producer Avicii who passed away today aged 28. The music icon died suddenly in Muscat, Oman.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii”, said his representative in a statement to the media, “The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given”.
Born Tim Bergling in September 1989, the DJ signed his first major record deal aged 17 in May 2007.
Using the stage-name Tim Berg, he enjoyed some early success with “Seek Bromance” in 2010. He switched to the pseudonym Avicii shortly after. And the monster hits soon followed.
“Levels” became his breakout international hit in 2011. Subsequent floor fillers included “I Could Be the One”, “You Make Me”, and “Hey Brother”. His 2013 single “Wake Me Up” topped the charts in over 20 countries.
His most recent release was “Lonely Together”, a collaboration with British singer Rita Ora.
While he never participated in the contest itself, Tim had a strong connection to Eurovision. In 2013, he co-composed “We Write the Story” with ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The track acted as the anthem for that year’s contest in Malmö.
It played during the inaugural Eurovision opening flag sequence, a tradition which has been carried on in all subsequent contests.
In the aftermath of today’s sad news, many artists from the world of Eurovision and Melodifestivalen took to social media to share their condolences. Among them was Belgium’s Kate Ryan, who worked with the DJ on her 2012 track “Run Away”.

R. I. P. Avicii. My condolences. He will be missed.
Tack för musiken, kan inte förstå. Du fattas oss. Vila i frid.
Love Avicii/Tim Berg! Yes, he had some many huge hits! I loved every song he ever released and had the luck to see him in London at the O2 Arena.
Kate Ryan’s song was just a rip of his Tim Berg track “iTrack”. And I don’t rate it very much.
This is sad. Rest in peace Avicii 🙁
So sad news. He was so young. R.I.P Avicii.
Levels, Wake Me Up and Hey Brother will always be my face hits from him
R.I.P
RIP you talented boy. I was shocked when I heard it yesterday. Way too young.
kids, do not drugs, MDMA, coke, Valium or Xanax
It was not drugs that killed him.
I thinnk he died of a pancreatite due to alcohol over-consuming.
Rest in peace, Avicii. I love him because he was such a humble dude and he always lets his music speaks for itself.
Even though I was never really into EDM, Avicii was always one of the DJs I liked the most. Unlike many other DJs, he was willing to make songs outside of the typical EDM mold like Wake Me Up and Hey Brother. I have a lot respect for him in that way. We’ve lost one the best DJs out there too soon 🙁
His tracks still were pretty much in that electrified dance wave that topped charts in 2011. I don’t complain about his talents though, just the time was when couple basic electronic genres were stale and couldn’t develope while people still needed big-room stuff. It even helped to separatate mainstream dance music by abbreviating it EDM while electronic genre kept inventing new stuff, blossomming much more nowadays, especially in unmeasurable cross-genre area.
Wow… What a loss…
He was big A list star…
Up on the top, with the super famous DJs
in the world, along with Tiesto & Armin Van Buuren…
The best ones die young …
Thank you for the music…
Goodbye…
R.I.P

One of the few artist got me in to Electronic music and Electronic Dance Music, gone. Worst part is that I’ve never got to meet one of the my favorite heroes who saved my life and gave my world color. So long, Avcii, Jag hoppas att du kan sova bra
So sad about hearing this terrible news! I loved your beautiful music. You changed music. Thanks and RIP Avicii ???
So sad. He will be remembered!
Wow. 28 is way too young to die. He had so much left to live and to give to the world. Rest In Peace, Avicii 🙁
Genuin Shocked since I heard the news! Avicii was the soundtrack to many days and nights of my carefree youth. An absolute talent who was taken too soon. Thoughts are with his family and his country of Sweden at this time. But his legacy will live on the many bops that he gave us through the years and of course his involvement in Malmö 2013 isn’t forgotten.
I just wonder is max martin happy right now after what he did to him. i shall never forgive max martin.never
What do you mean? What did he do?
Surreal. No words.
Another icon gone.
Today Sweden had its warmest day, first day of summer. And then this.. I loved to hear his music cause it was always so uplifting and inspiring, and so creative. But with melancholic lyrics. He brought me and others so much fun and joy, energy and hope and made us feel better We have lost one of the great ones and it hurts so much. The world just got greyer:( 28 isn’t an age. I’m 28 too. In fact he was one day older than me. That puts things in perspective.. Hey Brother and Without You will never be the… Read more »
I remember his songs played also at ESC 2016.
Love some of his hits: “Wake me up”, “Hey brother”, “Waiting for love”, but especially “The nights” – it is also my boyfriend’s beloved song. It will always remind me our summer road trip over Scandinavia.
Death is always terrifying, at least to some extent, but when it concerns young people and appears so unexpectedly, it’s even more tragic. I hope Tim is in a better place now.
I’ve just realised how much the lyrics from “The nights” fits to the situation…
He said, “One day you’ll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember.”
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me…
Oh my god, only 28 years…? What happened??
Guess…
he was sick and had previous surgeries.
It’s not confirmed how he died yet, …but he did suffer from pancreatitis caused by excessive alcohol use. That’s what most likely did it it seems.
When I heard about this hours ago I was crying so much… Things like that are just so surreal, I still can’t believe it. This guy was such a legend, his Music was amazing… We’ll never hear any new Songs from him, nobody will ever go to one of his concerts again. These News really touched me, I have so many good memories I connect with his Songs. R.I.P </3
I am so devastated by this news. Hope you’ll invite us to the big party in Heaven, Tim. R.I.P ??
Thank you Gromee for posting this. We will never forget him.
How the hell is he dead?
Why do all the good musicians die?
R.I.P Avicii, MJ, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Prince, David Bowie, Aaliyah and all other great musicians in the heavens
i can’t believe it i am to cry listening to all his songs now : (
