ORF’s Der kleine Song Contest, Austria’s alternative Eurovision 2020 show to decide their favourite of this year’s entries, came to an exciting finish on Saturday 18 April. Following three jury assessments, the Austrian public got the final say and they chose Iceland’s Daði & Gagnamagnið as their favourite Eurovision 2020 act.
After Eurovision 2020 was cancelled as a result of coronavirus precautions, several broadcasters have come up with replacement shows to air over the coming weeks. Austria’s alternative show Der kleine Song Contest saw a jury of former Eurovision participants scoring all 41 Eurovision 2020 entries.
In the first two episodes, broadcast on the 14 and 16 April, it was Iceland and Malta that earned the most points and topped their respective scoreboards. On Saturday’s final episode, the last batch of songs were presented and the jury selected their home country’s song, Vincent Bueno’s “Alive”, as their final finalist.
The Austrian public then had the chance to vote for their favourite song between Iceland, Malta and Austria. Ultimately, Iceland took the title, racking up a huge 48% of the public vote. Austria followed in second place with 33% of the vote, with Malta finishing in third with an overall 19% of the vote.

The Spaniards awarded their own song more votes than the others combined. Universo is not better than Alive.

I liked the format for this show. The one improvement they can make is just take the top three or even four songs over the three nights. Sweden and the Mamas scored better with the jury over Austria and Iceland yet they were left out of the final. The other improvement is never let Waterloo on the jury again. He hated most everything especially the third night.
There were three jurors who seemed to forget that they were allowed to award more than five pts to the acts.
Petra Frey was even worse!
I think it‘s quite unfair to Denmark, that they didn‘t advance to the „superfinal“. I think they should have rated Austria out of competition… But I‘m very happy Iceland won!

So Austria won the jury vote? Now there’s a shocker!!!
What is more shocking is that Austria won it barely and that Denmark almost won it. The Austrian jury vote looked really mediocre for Vincent with 8 of 10 votes cast and 52 points. But Manuel Ortega was full of praise for this song and full of love for Vincent and give 12 points, and also Zoe, who voted quite fairly throughout her panel session, also gave 12. This nudged Alive atop, although it was on path of a midtable result. Cesar Sampson, Alf Poier, Waterloo, Simone, Petra Frey, Nadine Beiler, Eric Papilaya did not really like it.
Let’s just thank the EBU that they don’t let countries vote for themseleves.

I’m happy for Dadi and specially for his song. Think about things is also #1 on iTunes in Austria.
I wish Lithuania or Switzerland or Italy and some other country would have been in the superfinal (could have been more than 3).
