On the eve of Ireland’s Eurosong 2014, which will be broadcast tomorrow evening at 21:35 GMT on RTÉ1, last year’s Eurovision entrant Ryan Dolan is getting personal. He has released his new song “Start Again”, which comes just weeks after Ryan confirmed the speculation that he is gay.

Penned by Ryan himself, the song—and video—discuss the sensitive topic of suicide among gay teenagers. In the video, a secondary school student is pushed, shoved, and bullied by classmates who can tell he is gay. Ryan, who has confessed that he once entertained thoughts of suicide himself, really sings from the heart. You can watch the moving video here, and read the lyrics at the end of this post.

Start Again Video

Despite the video being released less than 6 hours ago, it has over 1,000 views, which is great considering it’s an Irish artist only known for Eurovision. Maybe he will perform it on the Late Late Show tomorrow night?

You can check out our Eurovision 2014 calender for info on how to watch the Irish final tomorrow evening.

Start Again Lyrics

I guess life was tough, growing up
I didn’t even know if I could make it or not
‘Cause every day is harder on your own

And when they look at me, it’s clear to see
That they don’t want to be the ones who hang around with me
So now I guess I’ll go it on my own

Life was hard and I got down
But I got up and carried on
Time passed so slow

The life I lived was all in vain
A worthless show, a pointless game
Time was so cold

‘Cause I can live a lifetime living these lies
I can laugh and act OK
I can show a smile and say I’m happy
But there has got to be a better way

I wanna live
I wanna love
Don’t wanna care about anything
‘Cause I can live a lifetime living this life
I’ll start again

I’m tongue-tied, feels like
I’m losing hold of this life
But I don’t wanna be the one I love

No

Life was hard and I got down
But I got up and carried on
Time passed so slow

The life I lived was all in vain
A worthless show, a pointless game
Time was so cold

‘Cause I can live a lifetime living these lives
I can laugh and act OK
I can show a smile to say I’m happy
But there has got to be a better way

I wanna live
I wanna love
Don’t wanna care about anything
‘Cause I can live a lifetime living this life
I’ll start again

‘Cause I can live a lifetime living these lies
If I start again
I can laugh and act OK
I can show a smile and say I’m happy
But there has gotta be a better way

I wanna live
I wanna love
And I don’t care about anything
‘Cause I can live a lifetime living this life
I’ll start again

So I won’t waste a lifetime living this life
I’ll start again

You are beautiful, handsome and full of life. Please, don’t ever let anyone to spoil those beautiful elements of life that you have. Keep smiling even in adversity and be who you truly are to yourself. Time will come that any prejudices will overcome and peace will be in any one heart.

I love you Ryan you are so cute. You are amazing in every single way don’t let anyone tell you different. Everyone is unique and awesome in their own ways doesn’t matter if they are gay by anything.

It’s an utterly heartbreaking story told in the video, and extremely moving, and a gorgeous song. I wish he could’ve come back to ESC this year and performed a shorter version of this track!

For anyone else who’s interested, a song with a similar story (but whose music video has a different ending, though still dramatic) is “Animal Style” by Murs, a well-known underground rapper.

Vladimir, it’s not commonly used in this form, but entertain can also mean to consider something.. this is more used in an ironic sense, I guess.

Powerful video & important message! He sings with true conviction & somebody asked me why he just didn’t sing something as heartfelt at this at ESC.

“he once entertained thoughts of suicide himself” Entertained? Seriously? That’s the best word you could come up with?
