Baltic States at Eurovision 2023

As ever, the Baltic States shine in their original acts. All three countries are proud organisers of national selections to choose their entry, resembling their quest for freedom through music.

Lithuania’s Monika Linkytė is bringing an old pagan mantra to Eurovision. It’s the second time the songstress will compete at Eurovision, following her duet with Vaidas Baumila in Vienna eight years ago.

Estonia is sending a classic Eurovision ballad sung by talented vocalist Alika. “Bridges” was co-written and produced by Wouter Hardy who gave the world Duncan Laurence’s “Arcade” and Gjon’s Tears’ “Tout l’univers”, two top three entries at Eurovision.

Meanwhile, Latvia is pulling out rock band Sudden Lights, who won the national selection Supernova with their track “Aijā”. The song is a soft rock lullaby inspired by the war in Ukraine and its aftermath.

Do you agree with the results? Do you think Monika Linkytė will be the best placing Baltic act at Eurovision 2023? Let us know in the comments below.

My ranking of these songs is pretty much to turn this table on its head. I think Latvia is excellent for the record but Estonia is in my top 3 of the year and I don’t personally connect with Lithuania’s song in any shape or form, Monika is great but the song just passes me by.

Lithuania flew under my radar at first, but Stay did grow on me and it’s a clever and cute song. I also loved Latvia’s song and Estonia’s vocals are impressive. All of them deserve to make it to the final this year!

Monika did mention there were going to be changes. It makes sense; the stage in Liverpool is much bigger than the LRT studio. However, she also said the symbolism used in the national final will be brought up once again. These include the amber earrings, graphics of the Lithuanian woman, and her sisters on stage singing in circular form.

The fact that Estonia is falling against the odds is quite troubling. Alika is now a borderline qualifier. I have a feeling this year might be the grand final with only Lithuania innit. Sadly, all three Baltic countries sent decent songs, and, well, while Latvia is almost a sure non-qualifier, Estonia is quite shocking to me. On the other hand, I’m happy we did not send Petunija. I adore her voice in the song “Love of My Life”, but that would have cancelled itself with Alika, and we would have had the grand final with zero Baltics.

Honestly, with how things have been moving on SF1 Latvia might qualify. I don’t say safely, but might do so with certain comfort

Small number of votes and comments shows a lack of interest in these songs.

Which is a shame, because Estonia is the most underappreciated act of the year.

I hope it will stick with first-time listeners during the final and get a top 10 finish which Alika, if not the song itself, deserves.

Yes, Monika is my favorite of the bunch, but I truly like all of the Baltics this year and they are all in my Top 15. So I hope they‘ll all qualify.
