Picture: Suspilne

Public broadcaster Suspilne is back for another edition of Vidbir — Ukraine’s legendary Eurovision national final. Tonight, a record number of 11 contestants will face a public and jury vote to win the right to represent the country in Malmö.

Vidbir 2024 postponed: what happened?

The Diia app was supposed to open for voting around 19:30 CET, but many users found themselves with error messages. At 19:47 CET, Suspilne communicated through Telegram that there were indeed problems with the voting, but that voting would soon resume. At 21:00, Suspilne announced that they were still waiting for the Diia app to stabilise to complete the voting.

Around 21:30, the show was officially postponed until Sunday. The voting will go on Sunday the whole day with results to revealed in the evening.

On Sunday 4 February at 14:15, Suspilne Kultura will show a repeat of the recording. The voting will close a little before 18:00. At 19:05 CET, a second attempt at a results show will be made on Ukraine’s television channel Suspilne Kultura.

Vidbir 2024: the show

Yaktak, Ingret, NAZVA, ANKA, Drevo, alyona alyona & Jerry Heil, MÉLOVIN, Skylerr, Ziferblat, Yagody and NAHABA have sung it all out.

You could watch the show live on YouTube from 17:00 CET onwards. For the second time in Vidbir history, a stream with English commentary is provided by the broadcaster. The performances and jury comments were prerecorded on 2 February.

The show was supposed to run until 20:45 CET before its postponement with the winner being revealed shortly before. Typically, the winner of Vidbir does not reprise their song.

You can rewatch the show, including the missed attempt at a results show down below.

Vidbir 2024 format

Similarly to Vidbir shows in previous years, Ukraine selects its Eurovision 2024 entry using a panel of three judges alongside a public vote.

The voting of the three judges counts for 50% of the total points. It was the Ukrainian public who chose the members of the jury, selecting Andriy Danylko — the man behind Verka Serduchka —, Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala, and Bez Obmezen lead singer Serhii Tanchynets. After each performance, the jury will give commentary and feedback to each act.

The other 50% of the results will be determined by public vote. Like last year, Ukrainians in the country and abroad can vote for their favourite through the e-government app Diia. This means that each Ukrainian has one vote.

Vidbir is always full of surprises. This year, viewers will notice some differences as production company 1+1 Media Group will produce it for the first time in Vidbir history. This year’s Vidbir included several Eurovison legends from Ukraine, including Ruslana and Kalush Orchestra as well as an interval act dedicated to the music of Volodymyr Ivasyuk.

This is definitely the most embarrassing situation of the whole NF season so far. The broadcaster did not react in the right way and if the app isn’t working we could be getting the subjective and often harsh opinions of the jury to select an entry, which is worrying. Personally based on how the jury bullied her for her dress despite looking beautiful and giving us a great vocal performance, I would send Skylerr. In fact, her opinions speak for most of the nation on this issue. This broadcaster has been highly incompetent at dealing with this whole situation and… Read more »

Oh Melovin. Give Dotter her clothes back and the song is very repeatative. How is Ukraine nr. 1 in the odds this year? Because of the war once again..

ESC odds are always pretty much random this early. Last week it said Iceland yet Iceland was literally talking about pulling out. And are people not allowed to like our songs? You’re mad if you think we’d get a second “pity” vote. Did we win 2023? No – and the world has turned it’s eyes away from Ukraine this year, but that wasn’t the case in 2023. The chances are, we won’t win. Think logically for *one* damn second

Yes, of course, after they finished 6th last year, they are first in odds because of a war that Europe (sadly) stopped paying attention to in the meantime. Sure. Just like they were the most succesful Eurovision participant even before the 2022 invasion – that must have been caused by time travellers from the future who voted for Ukraine because of the future war.

Because of course it’s absolutely impossible for people to like something else than you do. It must be some kind of a grand conspiracy.

So there were 15000 requests per second to the voting app (it’s an enormous number for such an app) and the app logically crashed cz the max predictable load was around 5000 requests per second. (last year statistic says it was 800 per second).

But it’s okay don’t see any problem to know the winner tomorrow.

I’m so excited about the drama and scandals after the winner announcement cz Ukraine is Ukraine

Ukraine should probably withdraw if they don’t have the resources due to the fighting to manage a simple app.

It’s not a simple app, the voting was tacked onto it for Vidbir 2022 (iirc) for entertainment purposes. Diia is a government app the primary purpose of which is to provide access to government issues documents, make appointments and various other official things. The reason it’s being used for voting in Vidbir is because it by definitionhas to be reliable (as a government app) and you only gain access with a Ukrainian ID, so no voting fraud. Going by the numbers of people who usually access it at any given time, it would’ve worked perfectly fine. But Vidbir turned out… Read more »

Alyona alyona and Jerry Heil were good but I wasn’t blown away, I prefered Nahaba and Yagody I think, more impactful, more in your face. Melovin was perfect, Yaktak too but
I’m fascinated by Nahaba right now I think they are my Vidbir winners their visuals at the beginning are so good but I still can dream lol, Jerry and Alyona will get it and deservingly ngl because it’s a nice song, but the live performance didn’t bring something special, something wow.

very clever of ukraine’s broadcaster to postpone their national final to the day after so we will get a fully transparent result

We’ve also never seen a NF say to someone who is withdrawing ‘No! You can’t withdraw!’

Then again we’ve never seen a winner from a previous edition of Eurovision say to a participant that their dress is a problem and give no other feedback whatsoever!

We will trust the organisers at face value that there were difficulties.
But, as Ireland found out winning three times in a row it’s pretty costly to stage. Who would keep paying for all the Ukrainian wins? Does it benefit them to lose?

So who would keep paying for the Ukrainian wins? It doesn’t make sense for them to keep winning financially and for others to stage it.
It’s documented Ireland wanted to lose in the end because it was costing too much.
So why would Ukraine not purposely lose?
Who pays? Who hosts? Is it worth it?

Why won’t it makes sense for others to help host? The UK was pretty thrilled to do it last year and I’m sure they would do it again. It helps with tourism afterall.

Yes, they kept the show live and hour after it was supposed to end, are re-airing it tomorrow, and working on fixing the voting platform all just to rig it. An application to vote not working in a country at war which can at any time have internet trouble and all those kinds of things, I won’t call it “drama”. People need to stop criticizing for the sake of criticizing, especially on something minor like this which was not dependent on the organizers. At best, they could have thought of doing like Czechia’s doing at giving the result later, letting time for people to vote but it might cost more to have it going on for so long, potentially creating a problem of fraud too, etc. All in all, stop… Read more »

It’s possible, but the contest was extremely popular this year with over 140K viewers on YouTube alone. Since the official Diia app is the only way to vote, the pressure on the servers was simply unbelievable. Imagine if 100K people start to open the same site, which server will withstand such a load. On the one hand, it is a sad story, on the other hand, it shows incredible interest.
