Söngvakeppnin, the highly anticipated song competition held annually in Iceland, is set to grace Saturday-night television once again. The 2024 edition will feature two semi-finals on February 17 and 24, leading up to the grand final on March 2.
But before the Icelandic people cast their votes, our readers have been casting their own. We asked you to name your favourites in our poll, and you responded with 1,597 votes.
After verifying the results, it’s time to reveal all…
Bashar Murad is a favourite to win Söngvakeppnin 2024
According to our poll, you have chosen Bashar Murad as the preferred act to take the trophy. His song “Vestrið villt” / “Wild West,” for which he personally penned the lyrics, clearly holds a special appeal for many.
The Palestinian singer-songwriter picked up 370 votes in the poll — 23.17% of the total share.
Securing a commendable second position is Hera Björk with her song “Við förum hærra” / “Scared of Heights.” The Eurovision 2010 star accumulated 291 votes, equivalent to 18.22% of the total share.
Following closely in the third spot is ANITA with the song “Stingum af” / “Downfall“. The captivating song garnered 233 votes, constituting 14.59% of the overall votes.

I’ve listened to both versions of Bashar’s song, and whilst I think the English version is the stronger of the two, and I don’t think the song itself is bad, it just doesn’t stand out. I personally would send Sigga Ozk if it were down to me.
It would be very cheap on Iceland’s part to choose a Palestinian to represent them, especially this year & with all that’s been going on in the Middle East. Can’t you already see all of the pity votes flying not towards Palestine, but towards Iceland? Does Iceland really need to resort to this kind of tactics to have a chance at winning the contest?

The Luxemburg winner was born in Israel but has lived in Luxemburg since she was a little child. She is Luxemburgish. She was chosen for having the best song; being part-Israei in origin wasn’t relevant or put in the front in any way. Bashar lives in Israel (East Jerusalem) and has zero connection to Iceland; it’s pure gimmick. Funnily enough, actual Palestinians seem to disown him as a representative because he’s gay in a sadly deeply homophobic Arab society.
She has lived several years in Luxembourg when she was young.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of ones culture and traditions or wanting your country to do well at Eurovision.
We could do with a contest in 2024 without references to the terrible things happening in Gaza and Ukraine. I know they are infinitely more important events than a music competition, but we all need a break on Eurovision night. Vote Sigga and yell Go Tiffany.

Iceland will be so hypocritical if they send him (which they most likely will). They were all about boycotting but they know sending someone with the pal- facade will grant them pity votes after seeing how Ukraine was praised back in the 2022 contest. Considering Bashar’s musical education was granted in one of Israel’s top music school and lived there I do not buy into this pity party. 2022 – Ukraine wins because of the war
2023 – Sweden wins because of Waterloo winning 50 years ago. With a cheap song that ressembles 50 other hit songs. And with very shady jury voting that blocks the televote from having a say in the final result.
2024 – Iceland wins by exploiting the Palestine conflict.

I don’t want him to represent Iceland simply because I don’t like his song BUT if he wins the selection I hope he will be there in Malmö. Apparently EBU doesn’t care of broadcasters opinion and will let Israel compete (tbh I don’t care if Israel is there or not) so let a Palestinian artist also be there. He doesn’t leave in Israel. He lives in East Jerusalem which is under Israeli Occupation, but according to International laws, and the UN is Palestinian Territory.

I just heard the lot on Spotify. A tremendous set of songs and performers. There are four or five songs which I feel would make great winners. If I had chose it would be Sigga Ózk singing in Icelandic. It’s already giving me goose pimples. Go Tiffany!
Judging only the songs, I can say that Bashar’s song isn’t good…It has nothing.
Not that the other songs are spectacular, but at least are lightly better.
Iceland will send Bashar for the reasons you all know. But on the other hand Iceland doesn’t want Israel’s participation…So, why do they do national final this year, after all??

I’m not massively phased by who wins. Personally I’d love Blankiflur or Hera Björk to win (I LOVE Hera Björk), but if Bashar wins, I’d be happy for him too. His song is way better in English.
I think this is an incredibly cynical and calculated move by Iceland to claim their first win, hoping for a 2022-style landslide for Bashar. “Stefania” was a good song, perhaps not a winner in a “regular” year but was an easy top 1o finisher. Bashar’s song isn’t so good, and it would do huge damage to the contest of there was another sympathy winner.

Sympathy winner? Who would sympathize with a guy who studied at the best music school in Israel but then bashes the country who gave him all the opportunities. And then he represents a country far in the northwest, far from where he lived. Only because that country has a lot of anti-israel sentiment.

Anita and Sigga are my favourites in this competition. I won’t mind Bashar going through, his track sounds a bit different from everything else in the competition – lyrically it feels quite similar to Baby Lasagna’s effort, which I find quite interesting.
